Ok... who would have thought that I needed to research before changing oil.
Silly me, I followed the manual (30 ft lbs). Peeled the threads right out of swingarm.

Has anybody made an issue of this with Buell? Or has everybody just repaired their own as I have found on search?

Where can I get one of those temporary rubber plugs?

Thanks,
Jerry

There is a fellow Badwebber that has the kit and has been known to send it to those in need.

Good Grief, Charlie Brown.....I think torque wrenches have caused more problems than they are supposed to prevent...never owned one...hell, I think I would be afraid of one. Don't let Nancy Pelosi hear about this she will ban them...

Funny, now that you mention it, Most of the times that I messed up a chunk of hardware.... I was using a torque wrench.

It does make me feel better to blame the EVIL tool.
(the tool holding the wrench?)

I torque mine to 16lb/ft; and just because I could, drilled and safety wired the plug.

The other thing I do is use an aluminum crush washer, instead of the o'ring.

I think I paid $125 for the kit which came with 5 Timeserts and I ordered the tap wrench as well.

After having done the same to my Uly, Chad saved my bacon by sending me the kit. I quickly fixed the problem and sent it back. I think whoever has the kit now should be making a significant effort to get Chad's kit back or we may need to make a Badweb ride to this fellows house to retrieve the missing kit. It is really sad when someone takes advantage of another's generosity. My timesert is holding up very well. Thanks again Chad.

Well, let's not blame the guy...he says he sent it back, but I never got it. It could have been lost in the mail.

Heck, I ordered a service manual for my Jeep off eBay and never got it. The seller provided me with a tracking number and it showed as being delivered, so maybe a neighborhood kid stole it or something.

All I know is, I don't have the kit anymore. It only had one more insert left anyway.

I have a 1/2-20 HeliCoil kit ( with 5 remaining stainless helicoils)and a once used 33/64" high speed steel drill bit which is needed to size the hole before using the kit's tap. I used it a couple of years ago to repair the oil plug hole on my Electraglide. Looks pretty much the same as the Timesert with coils and all.
I dropped the oil pan before drilling because I in no way wanted drill shavings traveling through my bike.
Anyway, I'd let a fellow ULY rider use this kit but they'd have to pay shipping both ways because I'd want it back. You'd need a 1/2" chuck on your drill to handle that 33/64" bit.

this thread stripping sounds like a common "issue", what's the deal?, gorilla arms, torque setting too high or simply operator error??

Kieefer,
The Manual has the wrong torque settings.

I just get mine snug and never had a problem.

I believe L_je has compiled a listing of proper torque specs. I think he mentioned that several were incorrect.

I really do feel like Buell should do something about this.

I have your manual, Chad. I didn't think you needed it. : D

You have my manual?

Do you still have my jack adapter? It was a booger to get the thing jacked up to do my last tire change without it.

Did I mention it SUCKED trying to lift the bike without that little wooden contraption? : )

I was joking about the manual. I'll get the adapter to you tomorrow.

Follow-up.

Dropped it off at the dealer. Getting a new swingarm under warranty.
Made my case that I followed the manual to the letter. Service manager checked my torque wrench and that I didn't cross-thread.

Oh and told me not to do it again. I said that I was gonna cross out torque specs in manual.

I considered going to the dealer for help, but decided that for the effort involved in trailering my bike to the dealer, pleading my case, and waiting for it to be fixed, that I'd just take care of it myself.

The TimeSert is working great. It's a carbon steel insert, so there is no more worry about overtorquing the drain plug. : )

I had a small leak with it at first, but I fixed that by slathering some JB Weld around the base of the TimeSert...viola! No more leak. : )

I wouldn't hesitate fixing with a HeliCoil/TimeSert if mine need attention. That is the way it should come from the factory imho.

I just changed my oil on thursday,I thought to myself that this torque seemed high for aluminum! Not stripped yet. What is the correct torque?

Forget torquing stainless steel into aluminum. Just snug it up and then a bit more. Torque it and you'll be lamenting on this thread about how you stripped the threads. I've never seen an oil plug drop out if it was snugged up. You know how they always recommend hand tightening oil filters and then 1/2 to 3/4's of a turn more. Same for that oil plug. As a comparison, I believe the spark plug only calls for about 13 ft-lbs and that will crush that washer that spark plugs come with.
