Steve,

I really loved the color modification you did to turn the back of your Uly's seat red.

Could you please give us some insights/details/methods/costs on how you did it?

Thanks,
EV

Here is the information from my original Metamorphous post (http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/268757.html):

"I found a vinyl dye product from a company called Parasol (http://www.parasolinc.com/) that seemed like it could be the solution. There are other vinyl dye products out there; some that I have used before very effectively, but this company indicated that they could do color matching. I could have just ordered the product and done it myself, but I decided to send my seat to one of their dealers, a company call Classic Upholstery out of Danbury Connecticut. They did an outstanding job, a perfect match! Contact Lin Kendall at classicuph2001@aol.com if you ever need help with Upholstery stuff."

Now, after about 5 months...here are my impressions.

I still love the two color seat better than the all black seat. I am surprised that Buell did not make the new Blue Uly with a two color seat, it would have looked way better. The dye is holding up very well, I have only had a couple small nicks in the color to touch up maybe once a month. It would have been better just to have the rear section of the seat recovered, but I wanted to keep the texture of the '07 seat for the passenger. Probably any local upholstery place could have done the work, but I wanted to use that Parasol product mentioned earlier, and the company I used was the US distributor of this product. What was cool is that the dye wore off of the black thread on the rear portion of the seat, so it looks OEM or at least looks like the fabric was taken apart, dyed, then sewn back together. There are probably other products that could provide custom color matching and would probably work just as good, but if there are I don't know about them. It would have been cheaper to dye the seat myself, but I had to send them a part to color match, so I figured that I would just send them the seat too, and let them do the work. I got a couple ounces of left over dye for touch ups, and that was a good choice since I have had to use it a few times already.

So the bottom line is that it requires a little bit of maintenance, but to me what it adds cosmetically makes it well worth it!

I forgot about cost...

The total cost was $125, which is more than the cost of the '07 seat, which is about the same as they quoted me to recover the seat.

But if I would have done the work myself, the dye and the vinyl adhesion promoter would have been less than $50.

The process was not cheap, but still worth it in the end (at least to me).
