Anyone use a radar detector on their Uly? Crutchfield has a special on the whistler motorcycle-specific "Cruisader" model for $230 with a free helmet display. Sounds cheaper than a speeding ticket to me, especially since I just can't seem to follow the speed limit on this bike. | ||

I'm over the radar detector solution. Bought one of the very best available on the market Bell Sti Driver. All it did was ruin my rides with all the "sensing of radar". Used it in connection with a wireless H.A.R.D light in the helmet and it just became very annoying to be alerted to radar. Better to just use your best judgement in traffic on the interstate and go with the flow and exceed the limit on the Buell in its perfect environment on the back road twistys where radar is a rareity. I live in Va which is the worst state for radar so having the Bel Sti Driver was a must as it is invisible to the Radar Detectors Detectors. Bottom line is in Va they use a lot of laser and all the detectors do for you against that technology is let you know to pull over if you are speeding because you are toast! Relying on radar detectors is somewhat manageable in a cage but is a big pain in the ass on a motorrad and IMHO is not worth the expense or aggravation. Sold mine on eBay. | ||

If you have it on the bike, you will get a ticket every time. If you dont have one, you may get a warning. Displaying a detector is advertising your intentions. | ||

So much of the speed detection here is done with laser that I'd never even seriously considered bothering with a detector. With laser, even if you get a notification, it's too late - you're already done. And, as Lorazepam and Firstbatch already said, its unlikely that you'll get any warnings or reductions if the officer sees your detector since that just "proves" your intent to speed. I just don't go much faster than the flow of traffic in towns or populated areas. Use some common sense and it's unlikely you'll get bet popped unless it is a blatant speed trap or hard case officer, and if that's the case a detector probably wouldn't help much to begin with. | ||

I run the regular cigarette lighter powercord out the case and plug it into the Uly accessory socket on the dash. You can also get (and I'd recommend) this: http://www.cyclegadgets.com/Products/product.asp?I tem=RADSCR So that you get audio alerts in addition to the display of the detector. | ||

My friends slowed down, I didn't. The cop showed me no mercy. I was very polite and respectful, he was a machine. Go figure. I have a V1 in my tankbag now. | ||

Unfortunately the Grand Old Dominion deems it necessary to make detectors illegal to for the general public to own and operate. God forbid they cut into the gazillion dollars of revenue this "Commonwealth" makes a year from speeding tickets. Add in the new "Civil" penalties and we will soon be able to buy DC and turn it into a parking lot. Other side of the coin is that our major artery (Interstate 64) has been called the countries longest and most scenic parking lot so detectors are not required when going 7mph on the highway. | ||

Mr knapp, notice I said "may" get a warning  . Some municipalities, and state police get a major source of revenue from performance awards, and the chance of not getting one seems to decrease every year. Hooliken, the new laws in VA have convinced me that they dont want or need my tourist dollars. The roads are better in WVA anyway  | ||

The folks in TN were really nice. I took traffic school, and sent in the paperwork, my fine, and whatnot. I got the check back for the fine. Called them, after all in IL the traffic school is a higher cost option to keep it off your record. They said if I did the school, no fine, just wanted me to learn my lesson.  | ||

I had an Escort 8500 for a long time in my car. I was not impressed. It seemed like the majority of cops around me were immune to it. Very seldom did the thing go off before I could actually see the cop. In the car I was able to yank the thing off the windsheild and chuck it under my seat when a cop pulled up behind me(which happened more than once). Couldn't do anything like that on the bike. |
