Well in early April our insurance company determined that our Uly was a total loss. We opted to buy the bike back and started ordering parts.

Due to ordering parts, work, school and vacation, Carlos just finished putting the Uly back together Saturday. I was amazed when the Uly started on the first try after sitting for 3 1/2 months. Just like a Timex, these bikes take a licking and keep on ticking!!

We just did a ride on Sunday and logged 185 miles. The Uly ran just as great as it always has.

So which one was the totaled Uly?

Very nice!

My only negative comment is,... well,... geez, what an ugly color!

All of the Buell XB's are prone to being "totalled" by insurance companies because of the frame. There is no inexpensive way for the insurance company to test them to "verify structural integrity", so they just total them.

I want to say the left one, it looks newer, tires and header anyway.
I changed my mind the right one because of the lack of bags. I would think the one you've been riding would have the bags. Oh heck i just don't know. I call shenanigans!

Might we ask what you had to pay to ransom the "totalled" Uly fom the ins. co.? Also curious if you'd post a list of parts that had to be replaced to ger her running again. Looks like you did a great job, btw.

If it was an 06 that got torn up, perhaps it is the one on the left -It seems to be missing the little decal that says American Motorcycle, on the air cover below the Buell decal.

The ransom was $3,000. The estimate from the dealer came in at $7,200! Didn't know you could scratch a Uly to death! It's an adventure bike. It's going to have some scratches, right?

I started marking parts off the estimate and brought it down to a reasonable price to help us determine if we were better off to buy it back or start over with an 07 Uly. I think we ordered around $1,300 worth of parts (minus bags). We figured we were ahead of the ballgame and started locating and ordering parts.

Main components (some were replace purely for cosmetic reasons*)

Clutch cable & pivot shaft
Clutch lever & holder
Clutch lever kit
Lever kit with front brake
Tail light
Turn signal assembly
*Intake cover
*07 Seat
Hand Grips (donated by Damnut)
*Drive belt (not damaged, but starting to show wear on the outer edge)
*Wind screen
*Fly screen
License plate bracket
Hand Deflector
2 mirrors
Throttle cable
Foot peg mount (expensive part!)
Foot peg - passenger
Assorted screws/bolts/o-rings

The original estimate had the following parts included. These parts may have a scratch, but were not gouged or compromised in any way.

2 tires
2 wheels
handle bars
grab bars
triple tail
swing arm
front forks
Belt guard
Oil cooler
Frame Pucks
Muffler

While we were at it, we ordered the parts book for the Uly and our M2.

The top case is in good shape and I ordered the needed brackets from Eurotech. Until we replace the side cases, Carlos will use the Ventura bag for his travels.

As I stated before, the Uly runs just as good today as it did before it's little off-road adventure.

BTW - it's the bike on the right!

It will be great to see Carlos out there reaching for the ground again. I only got to ride about a half mile with him at MBIV. I'm glad to see the Uly survived that long drop!

I hope to see you guys at Buelltoberfest. And I don't want to see a need for bubble wrap!

Last time I saw that bike it was 50 foot down the side of a ravine!

Congrats on getting it back up and running!

We are looking forward to Buelltoberfest. I had told him "no Dragon for you", but I gave in. He's heading to the Iron Horse Inn Thursday night to ride the Dragon Friday. Not sure which bike he plans to ride this time. Either way, I'll trailer down the other bike and meet him at T.W.O. Friday late afternoon.

I've told him I want the long soft straps and a winch for my truck for this trip. This way, murphy's law will prevail and all bikes will stay on the road! And if not, we'll save someone a $400 tow bill!

Which one is totaled? I'd guess the big gal in green in the rear of the photo. Probably way too many Margaritas.

Chain of events

Late March

Early July

Mid July

I waited 2.5 Months between the Insurance Company and Parts. Then the other month was getting time to work on it. The last picture was on the Tank's trial run last Saturday. I have ridden it almost 500 miles since then and it just passed 20,000 miles.

Hi Ulywife,

I've got a couple of stains on my frame side rails and am wondering if you had to paint yours and if so what paint was a match. Your bike looks great.

Glenn - thanks. For Carlos I think it became a labor of love. He did a great job even though a few pieces were difficult at best to attach to original parts.

As for paint - we painted nothing. Everything that was replaced was truly bolt on pieces. We were lucky in that aspect.

Maybe someone else will chime in about a good paint match for the Ulys.

I did not have to paint anything on the bike. The only marks on the frame are on the left frame puck. The flyscreen, handlebar, bags and muffler took all the hard shots. The motor and frame show no signs of damage.

The bags and guards on the Uly make excellent sliders. They are toast but the bike is fine.
