I bought a new drive belt, with the intention of carrying it on the bike. It will not fit in the existing box it came in. Those of you who carry them, how far can you "fold" them up without damage? I would like to be able to carry it in a sidecase. | ||

Twist and roll it up like a bandsaw blade. It will roll up small enough to go almost anywhere on the bike. I think it might even fit under the seat but I have mine in the side case. I'll post a pic tonight when I get home so you can see for yourself. DO NOT FOLD IT! BC Steve | ||

Twisting the belt is supposed to be a big no-no. Minimum 5" diameter inside bend & minimum outside, (reverse) bend diameter of 10". It is a problem. I carried mine in the large side bag that I converted to a top box. Barley fit with those minimums.   | ||

It's not a hard enough twist to hurt anything and once rolled up is no longer twisted. The rolled up belt ends up being about 5" in diameter so no problem there either. Pic later, BC Steve | ||

I might try to come up with something in the way of a permanent, do-it-yourself box to carry these things. Steve, I hope you are right. I don't want to be the tester! Box size is 25"x11". I would be comfortable with 16x11, and just wide enough for the belt. | ||

How about a box like this? http://www.pfccases.com/store/product_detail_pages /12X8OPEN.jpg There is a somewhat local company that makes them. They have a stock size that is 16x11x2 15/16 interior, and 17x12x3 1/4 exterior. Gotta buy 6, I will get pricing if anyone is interested. | ||

I think of the spare belt I carry the same way I think of the donut spare tire in a car - it's just there to get me home. If it gets me home I'll replace it with a new belt and then it will become a spare again. I carry mine like the picture in Stevem123's post.... maybe it's a submariner thing. Fortunately I haven't had to replace my belt in the wilderness yet. | ||

Mine fits in my side case just fine. I have it taped up in there. I am going to tape it to the inside of the top case as that's what's on the bike all the time. I have no problem with bending it to fit. It doesn't show cracks, is in a dry environment. It shouldn't deteriorate at all. But as was said, it's my spare belt. To get me home. | ||

I dug up this computer sleeve, and the belt fits fine in it.  I put it next to the case mounts, and it looks like it could be mounted like a number plate if you just wanted a box to hold a belt. The sleeve is the same size as the plastic box I was interested in getting.   It could be mounted (a plastic box) with a bit of creativity. | ||

Minimum 5" diameter inside bend & minimum outside, (reverse) bend diameter of 10". These are interesting numbers, especially the reverse bending minimum of 10" diameter. I measured the pulley and it is less than 5" in diameter. Doesn't this count as reverse bending of the belt?  | ||

I was thinking the same thing Skully... The idler pully is much less than 10'' dia. I would venture to guess the engine drive cog is less than 5'' also. | ||

Do the belts brake on Buells often? Is it recommended that you have a spare? | ||
