When I took off the front wheel today the axle was so frikken tight I could not believe it. I bet it took 80ft lbs to unscrew it (yes I loosened up the pinch bolts.)I noticed the bearing seals were partially crushed in..When I put the wheel back on it took about 40 lbs just to turn the axle on every turn..The bike was at the dealer for the last 3 weeks getting the new rotor and pads...I am thinking the tech tried to loosen the left hand axle the wrong way and over tightened it before it dawned on him he was going the wrong way...and.... the little stopper is missing in the axle that keeps the special nut from falling all the way inside...good grief...Anyone had an axle do this?

I am very interested in what would be involved to correct this.. if it even needs correction. I was under the impression that the bearing is protected from crushing. The reverse threads are likely to result in this problem on occasion it would seem.

There have been several reports of the spacer between the bearings being crushed on the rear wheel due to over-torquing, which results in quick failure of the rear wheel bearings. I imagine you're basically looking at the same thing on the front.

I believe I'd take that thing back to the dealer quickly and get the bearings and spacer replaced.

I have an appt. tomorrow...The troubling thing is how hard the axle turned for the ENTIRE length of the threads coming out and then going back in..the torque is only supposed to be 39-41 lbs. and it was a two handed crank, probably 70-80 all the way. My initial thoughts were it was over tightened by going the wrong way to begin with, but it was definitely over tightened on the final assembly as I just about had to use a cheater pipe to break the axle loose. I have a machinist friend who said he could probably fix it if need be...that is Plan B. but as stated... it might need bearings and spacer now and that does not fix the thread problem.

Hey Adrian8,

Check for galling of the threads. I had that happen on my rear axle. A grain of sand got caught in the threads and that caused mine to do the same thing. I bought a new axle and ran a tap through the threads of the swingarm to fix it. It's easy to do when you're using antisease because dirt/sand will stick easily to the grease without being careful. I now always wrap the axle with a clean rag while it's out to keep the threads clean.
