So my fan finally died (2006 Uly, 10K). There was no warning signs just an engine light with a 36 trouble code. Anyhow - I've scheduled maintenance to get it fixed but how bad would it be to ride it until then? I rode it once on a 100 degree day (without my usual leather overpants) and ended up with a couple second-degree burn blisters on the right inner thigh.
Thanks

My fan quit on the way to Barber in April 2006. I continued riding there (100 miles) and all the way back home (~650 miles) via my dad's house in the panhandle. Not to mention the 100 or so miles riding around Birmingham area while we were there. At the time, I didn't have the RSS. However, I did remove the plastic factory piece for the remainder of the trip. You should be alright as long as you keep moving.

Thanks. I'm at work and away from the service manual. Does anyone have a part number for the fan? I'm running into typical BS here with several dealers - they don't stock the fan, won't order one until I bring it in for replacement. What I don't want to do is have it sit there for days waiting for replacement parts. If it's cheap enough I'll eat the bill and do it myself.

Anyway - part number please?

Midnightrider,

Your post brings up an interesting issue for Buell's warranty numbers:

How many of us just fix our own bikes to avoid the hassle and delays associated with the Buell dealer network?

I know that I have replaced 2 parts so far that should have been repaired under warranty and this might make the factory think that there aren't problems with such items as cooling fans since the warranty repair rates are low.

Just a thought from the peanut gallery.

"Just a thought from the peanut gallery."

A very valid thought at that Windrider. Bikers tend to be tinkerers anyway so some #s could be skewed enough to make a difference.

Yep - I agree. We may be hurting ourselves in the long run. I called two dealers - gave both the same information - the trouble code that specifically points to the fan and the fact that the fan NO LONGER RUNS. Both said the same thing - although they agreed it was highly likely the fan would need to be replaced, neither was "allowed" to order a part until they determined it was needed. I just can't stomach having the bike sit there waiting for a part when I think they should either stock the part or at least order it now so that it will be there when needed. Especially a $73.00 part. I guess if Buell REALLY wanted to get a feel for the situation they could look at the number of replacement parts ordered directly by owners and get a feel for it.

So yesterday I ordered the part from the closest dealer then last night after work cracked open the service manual and went by the numbers to remove the fan. The service manual has a flow chart that includes essentially hotwiring the fan to see if it runs when connected directly to the power supply. Guess what. It doesn't. The flow chart then says " replace fan". I will bring the old one in when I pick up the new one and see if they will reimburse me ( or at least order another one under warranty ) but I am sceptical.

We'll never know - but with normal ops around here and a "3-5 day" delivery time I would fully expect the bike to be out of commission for 7-9 days if I let the dealer do the warranty work
