Gosh . . I can't contain my excitement. I'm going to go ahead, start the thread and get ready. HP be damned. . . I see myself as a "Uly kinda guy".

I can't see myself trading my 07 any time soon, but I'll be very interested to see what upgrades they have, especially if they can be fitted to the earlier bikes.

Here's one that's visible:

This photo is of an 08 XB12STT from the
"Maximum Homecoming" thread. The updated XBRR type oil pump is clearly visible on the right side of the engine. I guess that also means the ignition trigger is on the left end of the crank also per the XBRR. Cool stuff!

Court,

Ditto for me. I have a 2007 and my complaints are things that I think Buell may have finally sorted out. Excessive vibration, cooling, loud fan that runs all the time seem to be the main things holding this bike back. If they have sorted out these items and (keep your fingers crossed) we can retrofit to current bikes I will be very happy. The movement to new motors, horsepower, etc. is exciting but not for me. Hopefully more details on the changes to the air cooled engines will be forthcoming.

The only reason I'm not riding one now is the "Heat" issue. Fix that and I go into debt. Wouldn't mind seeing a little more fuel cap either. One more thing, don't change to some high maint high tech motor, in fact I wished the current one had a carb...lol.

The fact that Court is excited for we Uly owners bodes very well for us on this 2008 announcement day.

I am having a hard time staying on task, as every ten minutes I run back to the computer to see if anything new has popped up.

What if we get a 19" front?

>>>>I am having a hard time staying on task

That's two of us and I'll be spending more time with you guys!

I'm off the charts excited about the new bike (providing of course, later today, there actually **IS** a new bike : ) ) and I love the David and Goliath element as Buell drafts past "the big boys" and brings some incredible technology to the playing field. No one apologies for anything anymore. The American kids who hot rodded '57 Chevy's, went to the world's finest schools and have an unparalleled command (I mean they wrote at least one of the text books) of the technology have cast a hat in the ring that shares NOTHING (that's not a single part) with anything previously produced.

But, for me personally, I am lusting at that 2008 Ulysses. Giving a 53 year old new track shoes will never make me a 4 minute miler. But . . man oh man . . . finally the Barricade Orange vs. Black question is answered! I am in LUST!

We got cool colors and a boat load of improvement . . . CONSUMER DEBT HERE I COME!

: )

Court,

With all of the excitement over the new racing bike, the air cooled bikes have been overshadowed (for good reason). Any idea on when the specifics of what has been updated will be made official?

Please don't do this to me... If the new 08 is that vastly improved, I'll be forced to try and sell my 06 (that's now dropping in resale value as we speak).

Man, I sure hope it doesn't have a 19" front and better heat dissapation (my only gripes with my Uly)....

It was kind of cool . . . Buell, as folks walked through the factory, was producing 2008 models.

There was a running wager on how long it would take folks to notice.

The good news is that the cam side of the engine was facing traffic. . . advantage to the visiting owner.

I'm having to have my heart rate monitored today!

47mm showas on the 08 and not the 43 that is on the 07, Why I like my front shocks I just need to dial them in a bit. Maybe I read the specs wrong but I'm pretty sure that's what the site says.
Almost 2 bills for the heated grips, I will go after market. The air flow deflectors for 27 seem reasonable but I wonder if it will cook the passenger now. Nice blue color but these changes won't cause me to upgrade my 07 anytime soon. And I'll use these for the heated grips

I wonder how the engine changes affect performance? anyone know about that?

Looks like the forks are up 4mm to 47mm, with a rear offset axle, perhaps for more steering lock.

The alternator is down 8amps to 30. I sure hope this is a typo, as having a larger one was nice for extra lights, heated grips/vest, etc.

Blue color looks very cool. Too bad it's by far the slowest of the three.

Thanks Paochow,

Do they show the Thrust blue ?

The minor updates I can live with (my 07 is 2 months new), but blue sounds nice !
The possibility of a 6 speed '08 was my biggest hesitation before buying my '07.

I did notice the 47mm forks with the negative offset in the description; your thoughts make sense.

The improvements to the engine sound pretty sweet.

Summary: A new ECM and engine sensors eliminate TPS resets and may reduce timing problems!

New Front End on XB12X Ulysses
The XB12X Ulysses adventure sportbike has new off-set 47 mm inverted front forks and robust off-set triple clamps that reduce fork flex under hard braking. Steering sweep is increased from 54 to 74 degrees for improved low-speed off-road maneuverability, and the Ulysses now comes with standard heated hand grips.

Thunderstorm V-Twin Updates
Buell advances the performance of its air/oil/fan-cooled Thunderstorm V-Twin engine series with a larger crank pin, an improved oiling system, and a new electronic timing system and ECM that controls an all new DDFI 3 fuel injection system. Combined, these changes improve drivability and performance, and reduce service maintenance costs. The Thunderstorm V-Twin engine powers all models in the Buell XB platform.

Steering sweep lock-to-lock is increased to 74 degrees from 54 degrees to reduce the turning radius in off-road low-speed maneuvers. New off-set triple clamps maintain the 23.5 degree rake and 4.8 inch trail.

New air guides positioned on the tail section of the Ulysses deflect engine heat away from the rider’s legs.

Modifications to the 1203 Thunderstorm V-Twin engine enhance performance, reduce maintenance, and allow a new redline limit. For 2008 the Thunderstorm 1203 redline is increased to 7100 rpm from 6800 rpm, giving this engine an even broader powerband, and riders the ability to accelerate longer and downshift at a higher rpm.

The instrument panel styling is refreshed and the tachometer reflects the new 7100-rpm redline.

A commemorative Buell 25th Anniversary graphic with Erik Buell’s signature is placed on the handlebar clamp.

New 47mm front forks replace the previous 43 mm forks. Secured with a new triple clamp design, this new front end improves the torsional rigidity of the entire chassis. Fork flex is reduced during hard braking for improved stability and feedback.

The timer cover is eliminated, as the engine is now crank timed from a new crank position sensor, which eliminates the need for manual timing, reducing maintenance costs. The ECM actively monitors and adjusts timing based on driving environment. The new sensor makes 30 reads per revolution, compared to the previous two reads per revolution, for more precise control of fuel mapping and timing to conditions.

More Robust Crankpins - the size of the crankpins is increased to 1.50 inches from 1.25 inches.

Oiling System Upgraded - A higher-output oil pump supports oiling to the new crankpin area. The new pump is driven off of the crank, a design based on the Buell XBRR production racing motorcycle.

A new eight-row oil cooler offers enhanced cooling performance.

All oil line ends are now equipped with Jiffy-tite fittings.

New DDFI 3 ECM (Engine Control Module) with increased computing capacity.

DDFI 3 actively controls and monitors the TPS (throttle position sensor), IAC (idle air control), and timing. DDFI 3 automatically zeros the TPS and adjusts fuel metering for smoother idle, eliminating service intervals and reducing the cost of ownership.

A new progressive throttle cam and new throttle cables provide smoother throttle input from stops, and less rotation to full throttle.

Heated hand grips are now standard equipment on the 2008 Ulysses. The grips are rated at 18 watts per side on the High setting and 11 watts per side on the Low setting.

As you know, your worship, I don't need much to get me enthusiastic about a Uly - It's my company vehicle and it's a good time to turn it over - so I'm in.

And I need 147 horsepower like I need another 50 demerit points.

Uly Mechanically Wise
Tally ho - all for it.

Rider-wise.

Seems they've largely fixed a whole lot of stuff I didn't have an issue with any way.

Turning circle has never bothered me.
I ride it on the front wheel only often and apart from stuffing the bearing been quite comfy with the forks.
But good news - in the engineering I trust.

Heated hand grips standard - spot the designers that live in the fridge! Like a hole in my gloves do I need heated hand grips.

Toasty leg
I wear leather mostly and don't notice it.

But I'm glad - it'll shut FB's target weak pussies up.

'I bought a .... cause I couldn't turn the Buell around'.

The ones that I really feel sorry for - the ones that missed out on one of the funnest bikes ever because 'ooooohwaaaar ...it's got a fan.'

How about some proper dirt road tyres and an optional muffler guard to get me really sporting wood.

Yeah as nice as all the refinements sound I'll stick with my 06. I went through the pain of sorting through the first year production blue's with multiple electrical problems etc. But for the last 8 months my Uly has been trouble free and just plain fun to ride. Maybe when they come out with a dirt bike I'll pick up a second Buell. But my 06 Uly is a keeper. Besides, I can always tell 08 Uly owners stories like " I remember when my Uly (fill in the blank)..."
