Nice changes, but I think a test ride is in order before I will get excited. Btw, I think I would still get orange. I mean, it is the fastest color!

Oh I forgot, they also built a new Buell dealer closer to where I live. Must be a conspiracy!

First off, I don't think Chad is kidding.

Don't assume (you know what they say about that !) that just because the 1125 redlines at 10,500 RPM that it doesn't make usable power down lower. It is still a Buell !

The 1125 is currently in a sportbike. It could be re-tuned for even more low end bias in a Uly type bike. I have an Aprilia Tuono, with the engine built by Rotax. It redlines at 11,000 RPM. Do not assume (again, that word) that it doesn't make torque down low.
I have several bikes, with redlines ranging from 6800 RPM (guess) up to 16,000 RPM (600cc supersport bike). Each has it's purpose, and use, and is better than another depending how you want to ride.

Just because you may think that an air-cooled Uly is perfect for you, don't assume (again) that it is perfect for everyone. If you wouldn't want a liquid cooled 1125 Ulysses, you don't have to buy one. I, personally, would like to see Buell in a position to offer both choices.

Please try to keep an open mind -- there is no difference between some "kid" who thinks that the air-cooled Uly cannot in any way compare to his 600cc sportbike, than some "old geezer" who thinks his Uly is better than anything else out there, in every way.

The Uly being as tall and short [wheel base] as it is, is already wheely prone. 146hp would have most sitting on their arse in a hurry. Probably not the best match for the 12X platform. If they went to the new frame design (5.6 gallons... yes please) and longer wheelbase it may be OK. Granted, you can tune the thing any way you want (within limits) but the old school engine is what makes the bike a "Ulysses" in my mind.

"I, personally, would like to see Buell in a position to offer both choices."

They are!!

Any thoughts on Rider magazine calling the ULY a pretender and a dirt poser? I know I ride the hell out of mine off the beaten path. I would love to take those writers out in my neck of the woods. So , do you think that the new ULY will see more off pavement time ?!? The compared it to the family SUV that never gets to be put into fourwheel drive or gets any mud.

Chad: I feel your pain: we had a 114 degree day out in the asphalt this past weekend teaching a RidersEdge NRC! Lotsa Gaitoraid used!

Yes. There is a sucker born every minute. Some folks, failing to get accurate information will believe that.

Both of them may choose not to buy Buells.

I'd suggest they read the Australian Outback Adventure, the trip from Washingtin, DC to the tip of South America and perhaps follow the upcoming Ulysses Adventure through Africa.

Oh folks...I'm not kidding about the engine. I want an engine that is smoother in the low RPM range that is liquid cooled.

I don't ride my Ulysses to work much because sitting in rush hour traffic at idle loosens my teeth and gives me headaches from my brain bouncing off my skill. Then when traffic clears, the poor engine is so hot that you can't give it full throttle until it gets some cooling breeze or else it will ping a bit...it's not the fault of the engine..it's air cooled. My BMWs and Ducati did the same thing.

I'm not saying the Ulysses engine is a bad one, on the contrary, it makes decent power and as long as you keep it at 4000rpm or above...it's a great motor.

I don't want a glass smooth motor. I like a good thumpy twin, which is exactly what the Thunderstorm is...it's just a little TOO thumpy at idle to about 3000rpm. Between 3000 and 4000, it's tolerable, and above that, it's a smooth operator.

I don't necessarily need the horsepower, but I'd like the refinement. Although the horsepower would come in handy here:

Take your shot chad - and put it with this one:

and it makes for a tidy summary of the bike.

Chad,
I gave you the 5. Anyways, I wouldn't mind glass smooth, not at all. Actually, I have no complaints about my ULY's smoothness after my Homecoming trip. At speed it seemed was very smooth. My wife's 2007 XL1200R Sportster isn't near as smooth as the ULY but funny thing is the Sportster's mirrors are completely vibration free at any speed. MPG is about the same with her Harley and my Buell. My son rode the 1989 YX600 Yamaha Radian and it averaged 60 mpg the whole 1300 mile trip.

Danger_Dave...I've ridden my bike through a creek...and it ended up on its side and I was soaked to the skin and had a gallon of water in each boot. Then I had to ride home in third gear because the shifter broke off.

I think I'll stick to the race track. It's just as fun to me (if not more so), but much safer. I'd hate to suffer a crawfish pinch. LOL! : )

Do you guys have crawfish down under?

It's interesting how a "jack of all trades" bike like the Uly is gets singled out against single purpose tools and maligned.

There are very few bikes that exist that are good long distance tourers, light off road goats, or part-time track bikes all in one package.

Funny how other bikes seem to be adopting or refining the "pretender" model (Tiger, MS, Versys, Sliver, etc.).

Could we be seeing the crossover revolution moving into the motorcycle world?

Maybe just as soccer mom doesn't really need the 18 inches of ground clearance to go to Wal-Mart, Joe Lunchbucket will NEVER really ride is $16,000 GS or 990ADV to Peru.

What good is functionality if you never use it?

I'm telling ya fellas, this upright ergo thing makes as much sense today as it did in the mumblemumble -- it's good the Buell is recognizing the benefits of a functional body when one arrives at one's destination!

Chad,

I believe that Danger_Dave is riding someone elses bike on his adventures. You may be paying to fix what you break. Other than that small point, my ULY will go everywhere my Triumph bonneville would go but not where that Yamaha ATV will. Amazing device that Uly, really likes gravel now that I've lowered the primary ratio.

I posted this in threads elsewhere here, but it was the topic of question several places so here we go again.

I have some good news, dealer told me he specifically asked, and was told, 2008 front end is retrofittable to older models.

So you get same wheel base (forks offset axle behind axis of fork tubes to maintain the rake and wheel base) larger fork tubes, imprved fork anti-dive, and increased turn angle from 54 deg to 74 deg.

The last time I did any riding in the dirt was on a trials bike over 2 years ago. I think I still have bruises. : )

You haven't lived until you try to ride a vintage Yamaha trials bike through a mud bog and sink it up to the seat, then drag it out and ride through a rocky creek to clean it up, then back on the trail only to be nearly decapitated by a low tree branch (or maybe the branch was regular height, but me standing up on a trials bike made me about 7 and a half feet tall. LOL!)
