What are you Uly owners running for a muffler? Are you happy with it?

1,300 miles, till stock exhaust -

16,400 miles and still on the stock pipe happy with quiet long rides. I had the Buell race kit on my City-X and loved the sound of that as well.

Ran the Stock muffler for 3,500 miles, and only real complaint was when going slow it was a little too jerky (and maybe a little too quite).

Ran the Race muffler for about 4,000 miles and liked the sound level, top end power, and it was much smoother down low than the stock setup. There is a little dip in the power in the mid range, which was not a big deal for me, but I did notice it.

Now I have a few hundred miles with the Drummer Original, and I like it a lot. It is very smooth throughout the entire power band and sounds great, although it is a little louder and not as much top end as the race pipe.

Later this year I plan to also get a Spec OPS, so I can complete the round robin of the most common XB12 pipes.

The bottom line is that all are good, and yet all are different, and it really depends on what you want which determines which is best for you.

Of the ones that I have tried so far, the Drummer is my favorite because of how smooth it is throughout the entire power band. I would rather not have as much noise, but even that is not a big deal because I wear in-ear monitors (foamy's) 90% of the time.

The experimenting is half the fun!

All depends on what you are looking for in a pipe. If you just want sound, then go with the Special Ops pipe. You can use it in conjunction with all your stock equipment. If you want sound and performance then the Buell Race Kit is the ticket. Can't find a race kit? Next option would be the Drummer pipe, along with race ecm and K&N filter.

There is a really well done comparison of several mufflers at http://www.americansportbike.com/ They ran several pipes and used a dyno. It even has sound clips.

Fantastic job!

race pipe, the stock was just too quiet. I love the sound of the race pipe and the top end pull, but I do wish it was a tad quieter but with the same sound. Cant have everything...

17,000 miles on a stock exhaust, and would only consider changing it if I could find something more quiet.

I ride at all hours of the day, and through areas where I would really like to maintain a good relationship with the locals. A stock, or quieter, exhaust helps to do this.

I've ridden with Ft_B and Chad, and I think they both have race pipes on their bikes, though I cannot comment on the sound because they were almost always too far ahead.

I've also ridden with a friend who has a Duc ST3, with Termi pipes. Sure, it sounded great at idle and sounded bad-ass underway, but after an afternoon, the sound was really starting to wear on me, even with earplugs. I couldn't even hear my wife's MTS over my friend's Termis, let alone tell if my fan was running.

About the stock exhaust:
Just look at your torque and hp curves. They are actually two compound curves, meshed together between 3-4krpm. A race pipe is nothing but sound and fury below 4k, and a stock pipe w/ the interactive exhaust wired shut will rob you of hp above 3k. The stock exhaust w/ the interactive valve does a fantastic job of providing the best power/noise performance over the entire range of engine rpm. Props to the folks at Buell for doing this.

While you may love your aftermarket exhaust, trust me, nobody else does!

After a day of taking pictures at and around the Ocoee Whitewater Center in TN, I was embarrassed to climb onto my bike because of all the exhaust noise from the cruisers passing through on US64. After 4 hours, this was even more annoying than all of the stupid little screaming brats running around the place. Higher up along some of the feeder streams and falls, you could no longer hear the little bastards (maybe because somebody finally stuffed their heads under water) but you could still hear all of the blaring aftermarket pipes.

Don't take this personally, as I generally hate most of the world, with exceptional disdain for Termites, Mosquitos, Panda Bears, Socialists and Communists.

"Loud Pipes Saves Lives." Now, let this thread burn into the ground.

Different strokes for...

This is actually a useful topic for me as well; I am looking to upgrade from by stock exhaust for better sound, smooth out the throttle response and scare old ladies when I feel like it.

Do you guys who run the original Drummer all run the race ECM? Is it worth it and if I run one w/o it, will it run lean, etc?

That makes brings up total cost another two bills; I say that I want one, but chances are... unless I can find one used or something, I don't "dislike" my stock setup enough to roll out the dough. My two cents.

15k on the stock muffler and far better things to do with my $$ than waste it on performance parts. I'm also settled in the quiet bike camp. I'm all for changing the tone or pitch of the sound, but I don't care much for the unnecessary loudness.

Stock pipe. Tried the Drummer for a week and found it too noisy for me. Took it off and went back to original. If I wanted noise I'd have bought a 2 stroke with stinger expansion chambers. Some say loud pipes save lives. I say quiet is a riot.

Keep in mind that these bikes were engineered with the factory exhaust for a reason. One of them being optimum performance for the engine at all rpm ranges. The OTHER reasons are designed to meet EPA requirments. I love my Buell Factory Race Kit! I've got a Special Ops pipe on the shelf in the garage just in case!

Sanjuro: Kevin at Drummer has stated that he runs his pipe (on his personal bike) with the stock ecm, that is probably all you need to know.

I have the race ecm that I use with the race pipe or the Drummer, and like I said above, I love the overall smoothness (at all rpm ranges) that the Drummer gives to my Uly.

It takes me no more than 30 minutes to swap pipes, so I can install the stock pipe before going on a trip into a National Forest area, and swap back to something else if I get bored one day.

Come to think about it, everyone should own two pipes; the stock for your "good boy" side , and one of the others for your "bad boy" side . Either way the Uly is a fun bike the ride .

I hear the Drummer on a coworkers CityX, every day he rides it to work.
Sounds good from 100 feet away, inside a sound dampened office; but I wonder what his neighbors think about at it 5:30 in the morning...

Tried another option...was way too loud and I felt it lost power...so went back to stock....plus it is the "jacking point". Save your money..if you have money to burn...send me some...

The Race, Drummer original, and Spec OPS pipes all retain the jack point support. That was also important to me. As far as the power, each time I swapped mufflers, I felt like the more I rode it, the better the power got. Maybe the ecm continues to learn and adjust over a longer period of time, or maybe I just learn how to ride the bike to better take advantage of that pipe's power curve.

Teeps: Your co-worker may have one of the older Drummer mufflers, they were even louder than the current design. I leave my neighborhood around 1500-2500 rpm's and the noise is not bad at all. I keep asking my wife and the neighbors, and nobody has yet to complain.

Ran stock for the first 2000 miles. Wasn't happy with the sound.

Ran Special Ops pipe for the next 7000-8000 miles. Kinda loud but I liked it a lot.

Bought a race kit (just after Buell announced they were discontinuing) and have been running that way since. I have put ~15,000 on it this way and like it best. Not too loud and not too quiet. I guess you could call it the Goldilocks pipe.

Race Pipe though I never really get to hear it. I wear earplugs for the wind noise in my helmet, so I really don't know what it sounds like. I bought it for the performance more than the sound.

Buell race pipe and ECM. Transformed my bike. No more pinging, jerkiness at low speed and it starts easier (less back pressure). If I want to get quiet through the neighborhood I just back off on the throttle.

Gotj, is that why you won't ride with me anymore?

I want a little more noise, but not enough to piss off everyone in the back country when I'm on the Forest Access Roads. If I want loud, I have Epco's on my Triumph.

Sounds like I might like the race pipe, but at $1400, that just crazy! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ewItem&ih=016&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem =&item=260131528805&rd=1,1
