No...I am not talking about which bike, I only own one! No...I am not talking about which woman, cause my wife does not normally appreciate me taking other women on vacation with me (and besides, I am bringing my son)!  I'm talking about which muffler should I bring to homecoming!  After all the talk on a recent "which muffler" thread, I decided to put the old stock pipe on, just to remember what it was like. It was actually better than I had remembered, and the lower volume was not a bad change. On the only hand, my black (except for the tips) ceramic coated Race pipe is a nice sound, really does have a nice top end, and is pretty cool looking too. Of course my recent addition, the Drummer, is a really mean sounding pipe, and I love how smooth the power is throughout the entire RPM range of the XB12. I know, I know...not another exhaust thread!  But this one is different, because I don't need to know which one I should buy, I only need to know which one I should use for Homecoming!  BTW, I also conducted a test to see how long it would take me to swap a pipe, start to finish, lower cowl installed, ready to ride, with all torque setting by the book. This was the fourth time I have changed mufflers in the last six months, but the first one that was timed. 39 minutes, 50 seconds! Is that a new world record? Or just a lunatic working up a sweat in his garage? Ahh...nevermind...I guess I was just bored this past weekend.  | ||

I just had my race kit installed on my Uly at the 10,000 mile service and I like it. At first I thought it was too loud, but I'm getting use to it now and it doesn't bother me as much. My vote is for the race pipe! | ||

Well, I am all packed up and ready to start my journey to homecoming in the morning...  and the decision has been made, I'm bringing the Drummer!  It came down to two reasons: 1. This was the only muffler I have never taken on a long trip. 2. And because I didn't feel like changing it out again! See you guys there!!!  | ||

It was not too loud for me, but I wear in-ear monitors to reduce road/air noise and to better enjoy the XM radio thing. My gas mileage was less on the trip than I am used to; I averaged about 42 mpg as opposed to 49 mpg on my normal commuting activity with the race pipe. It may have been less about the Drummer and more about riding two up with the bags fully loaded. The few times that I did ride (for short periods) without the earplugs, I noticed the Drummer did a lot of back firing while coasting or down shifting. Not sure if that is normal, but I'm not crazy about it. I will probably test the mileage during a couple weeks of my normal riding, then switch back to the Race or Stock pipe and see the difference. All in all, I wish there was a pipe that has the tone of the Drummer, but was 3-5 decibels quieter and didn't back fire as much. | ||

I love the XM! Sometimes I can't locate a song that I want to listen to, but that's why the Zumo also has an MP3 player. I wish the XM NextRad weather was offered on the Zumo, but the standard weather system is a lot better than nothing. It warned me of severe thunderstorms long before I got to them. The best thing is all the buttons I have to play with when on those long boring Interstate runs! | ||

That's kinda my deal . . I am, at least, honest with myself about what I want . . I am a total gadget freak. When I circled the United States on the Lap of America Buell, I had a CB radio, cassette deck, AM/FM, radar detector and so forth . . It's one of the reasons I love flying . . there is no limit to how you can deck out a panel. I REALLY like your layout. Sometime post, or send me, that link to the write up you did on the layout and wiring. I'm in the early "Super Uly" planning stages. . Hey . . a guy can dream, eh? | ||

I am running the Garmin 376c gps. Has nexrad weather, xm radio etc. I originaly had it on my Goldwinging but now on the Uly. I also am running a Passport Escort (I think)850 connected through a little box that when the radar goes of it overrides the xm/gps. When riding with friends and SO I have a cb that I have connected through an autocom thus I can have gps,xm,cb,and radar detector all on at the same time. I am using Shure ear buds with the sleeves from a set of ear plugs sold by aerostitch. I am not real happy with the cb, and would prefer one of the newer frms(?) radios but my riding friends and SO have cb radios. I like the weather feature alot, we have been able to skirt rain and also bad storms by using this feature. | ||

What in ear monitors do you use? I have an XM system in the garage. Took it off the bike cause I couldn't find in ear phones that worked good enough for me to hear. Let me know prz and thanks! | ||

But I have sort of narros and deeper ear canals and could not get a good fit with any of the different sizes and styles of tips provided. Also, I would get some discomfort after an hour or so. I picked these Etymotic-style tips off of eBay and they really made a difference. They are longer, work better, and are very gentle on the ears. Make sure you tell them you want them for Shures if you try them to get the ones that will work best. They seal out quite a bit more outside noise than anything else I tried but the benefit of it is that I am able to turn the volume way down and can still hear things as well at 65 as I can at an idle. I've evolved to a Philips GoGear 6GB MP3 player/FM radio and have found it to be the best small FM receiver I've ever used. It uses the headphone cord for an antenna so in essence you have a very good folded dipole antenna. It really brings in the signals well and minimizes fading and breakup around town. The player, a model HDD1630/17, has performed faultlessly for me too but it seems to get mixed reviews from the hardcore player users (which I'm not). As long as the radio keeps working it will have a good home with me though. I've got 820 mp3 files on it and it is strange to not hear a single repeat for days at a time. Jack |
