I need to replace a fastener that holds on the right side black plastic piece under the frame after it became cross threaded and stripped. Any suggestions / help is appreciated.

Yes the fastener is on the bike. It is the female portion that holds the black Torq screw that holds the black plastic piece that is on the opposite side of the left plastic air scoop. Because the screw got cross threaded, the piece now just spins and there is no way to tighten the bolt. I would like to replace it.

Get yourself a helicoil kit. Only real way to fix. Unless of course you weld the hole then drill and tap it.

a thread insert may be your best bet. they work similar to a rivet with threads inside. good for shallow thread applications. i have a feeling getting the old bolt and insert out may be the more difficult part of the job.

Hooliken,

If I understand how the helicoil works, it would solve the threading issue but how does it solve the fact that the fastener now spins when I put the bolt into it?

Are you talking about the threaded part towards the front of the bike? on the Black engine cradle? If so it might be easiest to take the Cradle off and weld a nut to the back side of it. Or just try to reach you fingers up there with a nut. If its towards the back of the black plastic piece then thats in the Frame and a heli coil would be your only option.

Kevin,

I can get the old bolt out but the insert part is the issue. Any ideas on how to get the old insert out?

Thanks

I believe the part in question is either a riv-nut or is riv-nut like.

(The Rivnut is a one-piece internally threaded and counterbored tubular aluminum rivet that can be pulled up or headed while working entirely from one side, forming a bulge or head on the blind side. This upset is large enough to resist being pulled through metal or plastic even under conditions of eccentric load. It overcomes the difficulty of installing brackets, handles or other attachments to tubular pieces.)

A riv-nut http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/hapages/rivn uts.php is a likely repair for this problem.
