Anybody aware of other options for hard luggage for the Uly (non aluminum box styles)? Looking for something that doesn't leave behind the framework when luggage is not in use.

I have heard nothing but good things about the Caribou system. The only negative I have heard is that they will not hold a full face helmet. Why anyone would want their helmet in a bag instead of on their head is beyond me...

You put the helmet in the bag when you go into a bank. That way the guards don't shoot you, 'cause they think you're pulling a heist.

I saw the Caribou bags yesterday while on a ride with "Blackangus". They are good looking bags for the Uly. He said that the Caribou guy is working on a top box design, which I would think should be big enough for a helmet.

I like the Givi V35 luggage and would love to have a set mounted with SW-Motech quick lock contour racks. Has anyone ever seen a bike with these racks? If yes, any thoughts on how the racks might be made to work on the Uly?

I doubt that you would be able to get the SW-Motech racks to work, as they are engineered in detail to fit specific bike models. AFAIK, they don't support the Uly yet, and if their model history is any indication, they probably won't.

I was able to get a set of the Fehling top- and sideracks here in Germany, and I am very happy with them. These allow you to fit standard Givi cases, of which there are many sizes and styles.

Advantages of the Givi cases include:

1. Relatively cheap and durable
2. Parts readily available worldwide
3. Latches work great! : )

The toprack can be fitted without the sideracks, or vice-versa. The Uly's Triple Tail still works in all positions with toprack fitted. The only problem with the kit is that the upper two toprack bolts included were the wrong thread (M8 instead of 5/16"), and the instructions are very poor, even if you read German!

Fitting a Givi topcase to the Fehling toprack would require an additional Givi mounting plate, such as the E150. The sideracks include two small tabs to relocate the turn indicators rearward a few inches, so the sidecases do not interfere with them, or block the side view of the lights.

The Fehling racks for the Uly are not yet stocked with Two Wheel Touring, Fehling's US distributor, but they indicated they can get them on a case-by-case basis. I'm not affiliated in any way, but just passing the word.

I'll attempt to attach some images here of the racks, and my bike "in the wild" with Givi E45 sidecases mounted.

Whoops, sorry, encountered a size limit with the photos of my Uly with Givi cases mounted. Above pictures are ad copy images provided by Fehling. For more pictures of my bike with Givi E45 sidecases mounted, see my personal website here. I took these during a recent trip through Austria, Italy, and Slovenia.

Bob,

Can you tell me why they won't support Uly? Seems like an easy bike to make the racks work on without exhaust or other things getting in the way.

Thanks for the photos,

Mark

Mark,

Of course, I can't speak for the company, but I'm sure it is just a business decision. Motech racks are relatively specialized and and expensive, and you can see that they only support a limited number of models. Specifically, these seem to be the more popular models I see on the roads over here in Germany.

FWIW, in my own experience, I have found that hard luggage is so convenient and so useful that I leave the cases on the bike all the time. The only time I take my Givis off the bike is for washing. Now that I am used to them, I would never want a motorcycle that couldn't be easily fit with hard cases.

So, the appearance of the racks is not too much of a consideration for me, although I much prefer the tubular style over any cast designs (ie Givi Wingracks).

Old_mil,

Sideracks (Kofferhalter) 7138 KH
Toprack (Gepäckträger) 7137 G

In the US, contact Two Wheel Touring. They normally only sell Fehling's scooter accessories. If you can organize enough Badweb interest, they may start stocking these Uly parts, as they've done with FZ1 and V-Strom engine guards by Fehling.

Mods: is it against policy to post links to non-Badweb sponsers as part of a review? If so, please let me know by PM and I'll edit this post as appropriate.

Bob,

A couple of more questions...where did you get the Givi saddlebags and did you have to get any special mounting hardware to attach them to the Fehlings racks?

Thanks

Old_mil,

You can order the Givi luggage at just about any (non-HD) motorcycle dealer, but for real expertise, I'd recommend you contact Twisted Throttle. Their website has good information on their Givi cases available by mail order, and if you have any questions, just give them a call. Not affiliated in any way, just a happy customer, and hoping I'm not violating any board rules by posting a link to a non-sponser.

The Fehling kits include all of the Givi mounting hardware you will need to mount any of the Monokey-series cases (ie E21, E36, E360, or E41).

While this thread is still active, I will re-iterate a few key points about the install:

1. The upper toprack mounting bolts supplied with my Fehling kit were the wrong thread. The correct thread should be SAE 5/16", not metric M8. The M8 will fit, but just barely, and risks damaging the alloy threads.
2. The cast metal of the Givi mounting lugs (upper triangle-shaped tooth, and lower mushroom-shaped lugs) will break or crack _very_ easily. Use blue Loctite on the fasteners, and tighten only until snug. I wouldn't turn more than 1/2 turn past flush -- really, just beyond finger tight. If you break any of the Givi mounting lugs, order new ones from Twisted Throttle, not Fehling.
3. The subframe parts on the Uly are all made of alloy metal, of course, so be careful when threading the bolts. The soft frame metal is very easy to cross-thread. Use blue Loctite and err on the side of too loose, rather than too tight.

If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask here or by PM.

Bob - do you have a thread pitch and length measurement for the correct 5/16" toprack screws that should replace the original ones provided by Fehling?

Thanks,

Hey, twitedthrottle. I noticed you are a recently new member. Are you going to start offering some of your fine products for the Uly? I go to your booth at just about every rally and look over your products, but my Uly is being left out, ignored. Hurts my feelings man... How bout more than a horn for our bikes. (The horn rocks by the way)

Erik,

According to information from expert Badweb sources, the proper bolt should be 5/16"-18 TPI, and about 2" in length. I don't know the length for certain, as I still don't have the correct bolts installed, but it would certainly work a lot better than the M8 bolt.

While we're at it, do the original stem mirrors on the Uly used 5/16"-18 TPI threaded mounts as well? I've heard some reports that standard M10 mirrors won't fit the bike. Any adapters available?

Chris_in_tn - I don't know the rules of the board regarding vendors, but I'll answer the question... just let me know if I shouldn't post this kind of stuff in the future.

Twisted Throttle is now stocking the Fehling Givi mounts for the Ulysses (both top and side mounts). We're also trying to figure out how to fit some other accessories (mirror wideners for one). We've already gotten our hands on handlebar risers for the bike, and are working on more widgets as well. If you have any requests, please let us know.

Right now, I'm mostly lurking on the board trying to get to know the bike a little better so we don't break something!

Twistedthrottle,

You sold me a set of mirror wideners a while ago and they work fine. You could list them for a Buell, or at least a Uly, and no one would know the difference. I don't remember the model you sent but if you need the spec, let me know.

Just an idea I got from a guy who was running a set of Storm cases at a rally this weekend:

How about adding these to the Fehlings rack?

http://www.cases4less.com/detail_storm_2600.html

You can buy a pair for $190. That plus the Fehlings rack will have some seriously durable hardcases on your Uly for about $500.

Old_mil,

Looks good, the Hardigg Storm cases are very similar to the Pelicans.

I'm guessing you could mount them using the Touratech pucks, or just bolt them direct to the racks using the Givi mounting point holes. Note I haven't tried this myself, but am only speculating.

The only problem I have with the hardened shipping cases is that they can't fit a helmet, essential for us commuters and grocery-getters. Of course, with the Fehling racks, you could always have two set of luggage. The Givi cases could take care of the normal work and errand duties, while the Hardigg cases could handle the occassional runs to Patagonia.

HTH.
