Hey, I'm going to do a multi-day dirt expedition that will take me from Salt Lake thru the Wind River Mtns, Jackson Hole and to Big Sky. I will have under 5k miles on my Uly when I start. My belt is looking dandy. Questions.... -how big a deal is it to carry a spare belt drive -where will i store it - i.e. will it fit in the top/side case ok? -how will i remove the rear wheel if needed on the trail without a BABB? (i needed a big ass breaker bar when i did it in my garage) Thanks! (Message edited by chinook on June 15, 2007) |

Hey, when are you going to be there? I think Ulendo said the belt will fit in a tank bag. Hopefully you won't need to remove the rear wheel out on a trail. Tire plugs an a portable 12v compressor may be enough to save the day? |

I do not leave the state without carrying a spare drive belt. I've broken 3 and have been stranded twice. Luckily both times were close to home. It is possible to replace a broken drive belt by carefully laying the bike on it's side. At the very least the rear axle needs to be removed so the new belt can slide between the wheel and the swingarm. The removable section of the swingarm needs to be removed as well. Be sure to replace the removable swingarm section before applying tension to the drive belt as the rear axle is tightened. Done in the improper sequence will put a great strain on the swingarm and risk bending it. I roll my spare belt into about a 10" coil, much like you would roll a bandsaw blade into a smaller coil. Then I carry it in a plastic bag and store it in the bottom of the topcase. I also carry the proper allen wrenches for the swingarm section, and the torx for the other misc things that need to be removed while changing out the belt. A short box end wrench that fits the axle adapter works fine.......just make sure you break the axle loose before you lay the bike down.....you will need to stand the wrench with your boot. And remember the idle pulley does not need to be removed, that could be a real pita out on the road. Also the same allen wrench that fits the swingarm section fits the right footpeg assy. That will need to be removed as well, as will all belt guards, and the countershaft cover. (Message edited by debueller on June 16, 2007) |
