Does anyone have any experience tinkering around with installing a carpc stup on the Uly or other bike? I've done some in cars, and thinking of hiding a nice little Intel Macmini on the bike somewhere if I can find a waterproof touch screen. I've seena laptop install in a saddlebag on a bike on mp3car forum. Just kicking it around, but would like to know about how much juice people tap from their Ulys and such with all the toys.

You would be nuckin futs to do it. I gave it thought for a minute, its possible the computer can fit under the seat in that little space, but i would mainly be concerned with the vibrations damaging the hard drive. You could spend some serious cash and get a nice solid state drive and not have to worry about that thou.
Second issue that comes to mind is power, i don't know how much the Uly puts out but from what ive read its not much to over do it.
3rd concern would be the monitor, if it was up on the handle bars you couldn't use anything bigger than a few inches without running into issues related to getting it to fit and then possibly it affecting the balance of the bike. Oh yea dont forget power too. : )
4th concern, would be wiring. Assuming none of the previous issues, your gonna have to run a handfull of wires between the computer, battery, and up to the monitor, depending on where you want it.
5th concern, weather. Rain + Computer = bad.

Sorry if this seems so negative, just pointing out the first few things that came to my mind as i thought about it. Good luck. : )

what purpose would such a device serve? is it possible to keep this device portable so as to not have to have it with you when not needed?

On a macmini, certainly it could be detached easy enough. The purpose would be as a multimedia machine/gps/bluetooth etc. Looking for using it on a long distance ride maybe in a hard bag, but still thinking about what I know about integrating one in a vehicle to a motorcycle.

Just daydreaming mostly, but intriguing. lots of info on mp3car.com for applications and front ends.

Just doing more thinking, if you put in one of the hard cases, you would need to drill a small hole for the wires and then hope you can use some kind of grommit or something to keep water out. Also i would be worried about cooling, stuff in the Buell hard bags gets toasty already on a warm day.

I would put one of these http://linuxdevices.com/news/NS8464432110.html
under the seat. And as for a monitor, I would cut a square out of the triple tail and put in an LCD, that way it would be hidden until you flipped up the tail.

I can't seem to find the link right now, but Apple announced that they are planning to bring a completely solid state laptop to market - no hard drive, just a big flash RAM storage. That might be a good way to go if you are concerned about HD lifespan from the vibration and jolts.

The Garmin Zumo GPS does a lot of that. GPS (of course), mp3 player, bluetooth, XM radio, XM traffic and weather.

If you want to run a PC, it shouldn't be too hard. http://www.mini-box.com has all the parts you need, including 6-24 volt power supplies, compact flash IDE drives, and fanless motherboards. Designing a weather proof interface would probably be the hardest part.

Why not just carry a pocket pc? I have a HP Ipaq and it does all I want. GPS, Music, Surf the web, check email, re-set TPS, and anything else a small computer can do. I haven't fabbed a mount because it's not weather proof but I can carry in in my pocket so it's safe there. They do make a water proof/shock proof case for them but they are bulky and ugly.

I am a field service tech, and I dont care for the do everything gadgets. If you have a problem, it effects all your road tools. I dont mind having a gps, phone and ipod on the bike.
