Mind you it was quite, it still was pinging. I couldn't reproduce it around town, but roll on full throttle on the highway from 2500-4000 it would ping. I have about 1500miles on my bike and I think this is the first time it's done it. Bike was in last week for the first service. Only gas we have around here is 91-94. Based on the facts above, I'm thinking due to emissions the bike is lean. I think all bikes are lean from the factory and it's my understanding the race ecm will richen things out a bit? So those who had a pinging problem and installed the race ecm, please step forward, I'd like to hear if it's helped. |

Sorry I noticed a few posts already ... I did some quick research Wikipedia says... Detonation can be prevented by: The use of a fuel with higher octane rating The addition of octane-increasing "lead", methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT), isooctane, or other antiknock agents. Increasing the amount of fuel injected/inducted (resulting in lower Air to Fuel Ratio) Reduction of cylinder pressure by increasing the engine revolutions (lower gear), decreasing the manifold pressure (throttle opening) or reducing the load on the engine, or any combination. Reduction of charge (in-cylinder) temperatures (such as through cooling, water injection or compression ratio reduction). Retardation of spark plug ignition. Improved combustion chamber design that concentrates mixture near the spark plug and generates high turbulence to promote fast even burning. Use of a spark plug of colder heat range in cases where the spark plug insulator has become a source of pre-ignition leading to detonation. Anyone try a colder plug? |

Well for me the combination of the race ecm and pipe took care of my ping. it also starts easier and runs smoother at low speeds. Mine really pinged bad. It was embarrassing to pull out from a stop light under load and have my Uly ping like an SOB. Etennuly and I did 423 miles in 80+ temps this Saturday and I don't think it pinged once. |

Thanks Orange... My visa is wanting to get used... Davo, I was thinking of bringing it into the dealer and have them retard the timing. Still curious if anyone tryed a colder plug. |

Davo, I was surprised to see you sold your 12X. I thought you had just gotten it all sorted out. Pick out another bike yet?? |

I rode 330 miles yesterday and mine only pinged on the last hill to my house with very little gas in tank. I have the race kit, dealer tuned with direct link. Not sure if all this really helps with the ping. Prior problems were intake leak. Still haven't checked my timing. It did run suprisingly well all day. Fan ran most of the day so I know it was hot. Ride covered from 5000 feet to Cameron Pass (el. 3132 m./10276 ft. Ran good up top as well compared to before the tune. |

Bosh, I corrected the pinging in May of 06 just days after I first experienced it. I replaced the Uly with a KLR 650 because I needed a bike that I could carry around in the back of a vehicle and not worry about banging it up. I was afraid to bring the Uly because it was too nice and the external frame was vulnerable to getting damaged by tool boxes and other bikes. I needed some very basic transportation that would get me around town. I do miss the Uly though it was a awesome bike. The new owner promised to ride this way and keep me posted on the bikes condition. There are a few Buells close by that I still work on to keep me in the Buell family. |

Adamd, If it's never pinged before and since you say you just had the first service, it could be the tech didn't quite get the TPS or the timing set quite right. Might be worth re-checking. My 2007 with 3000+ miles hasn't pinged yet. Rode all day in ~95 deg. F temps on Sunday. |

Adamd, I would check for a intake leak. Mine started pinging really bad and I took it in and it was a intake leak. It hasnt pinged that bad since. It was right around the 1500 mark. I have 7k on it now. While your at it see if they will check the timing since my dealer refuses to do mine unless I pay them. |

I saw a Super TT at F&S HD in Dayton, OH Saturday and I fell in love with it. I wish I could get one in 984. I have always liked square engines but I think the 9 would tach up nicely. I think I am having Buell withdraw. By the way many thanks to F&S HD for supporting the Dayton community and the Hot Shoe series!! |

I had a KLR too. Anyways, no ping today. Same test, the only diff was it was cooler out. Same gas and I'm almost on Empty. |
