Since it was a nice albeit extremely hot day in the Old Dominion yesterday I decided to jump on the Uly to ride to my union meeting about 90 miles from my house. Ride down was uneventful what with the Uly's ability to cruise at 85 on Int 64 without even breathing hard. Most of my union brothers loved the Buell although a couple of the old times still referred to it as a "crotch rocket." So we did our thing and I headed home about 9PM. Well about 20 miles from the hall I noticed some very BRIGHT lightening flashes on the horizon...of course in the direction I was heading. Some was the classic white but some was the reddish brown of "heat" lightning (for lack of a better term). I continued on until I felt the temp drop about 15 degrees and the pressure along with it. About this time while traveling at a leisurely 70 there were two strikes within seconds about 20 feet in front of me. So I thought "Ya know Ken now would probably be a good time to seek a little shelter." So exiting the interstate I happen upon a Citgo station with a suitable awning. When the heavens opened up as "they" say. Lucky for me the owner who was from India turned out to be an extremely hospitable host keeping full of coffee and hotdogs for two hours while this storm raged. While sitting outside by my bike a very attractive lady felt so bad for me that she offered to have me come have a late dinner with her and her husband being that they both were riders as well.

Needless to say my 1.5 hour trip home took 4. The t&l stopped but it rained on me the entire way home. My Uly with the Conti Road Attacks handled the wet extremely well. I did take a moment to soften up the rear preload. I am falling more and more in love with this bike with everyday of ownership.

Thanks for the rant space,
Ken

Ken,

Glad you made it home OK. It's easy to forget that a motorcycle, unlike a car, offers NO protection in the event of lightning.

BTW, I saw where Conti is coming out with a new tire with tread more like a Pirelli Scorpion (I forget the name). It'll be interesting to see how those work out on a Uly.

I was so glad that that story didn't veer into a "Dear Penthouse" story. ;)

For a second, I was worried.

Trust thoughts of swanging did entire my mind. Luckily I married a hottie who I happen to actually like. And she puts up with my moto addiction. And so far my bike or two a year policy has not ran her off...woohoo.
