I am on a 6K mile trip from Kansas to the west coast and beyond...yesterday in Bryce Canyon NP the fuel pump on the ULY quit....The reason the pump quit is 4 wires on the pump, which is located in the gas tank shorted out. They shorted out because they are tucked behind a metal clip and the clip wore thru 3 of the 4 wires... This is a very bad situation and if a recall is ever needed this is it...the bike will suddenly quit as the fuse will blow and it will keep blowing fuses until it will not run...the wires need to be shielded as the great dealer in Washington, Ut, Zion HD shielded wires on an 06 pump...the 07 pumps have a diff. part number..my ULY has 26K...I would not venture very far from home with a 06 fuel pump..I have pictures on my buddies camera of the wires that are rubbed thru...Court are you listening???? This is Serious....

Are the wires that wore through inside the tank or the external ones leading to the pump?

The wires that are chaffing are inside the tank...they are connecting the top of the pump with the bottom of the pump..they are about 6 inches long and are tucked behind a metal keeper that joins the two pump halves together. This is a very shoddy situation...it will happen to every bike...sooner or later with this style pump...guaranteed. I am glad it happened where it did...two days later it would have left me stranded in Death Valley, CA...

Interesting, my bike is at the dealer right now for a fuel pump replacement. The new fuel pump the dealer received was bad and they had to order another one. Bike is an '06 Uly.

Fuel tanks don't blow up nearly as easily as Hollywood would have you believe.

The fuel pump is at the bottom of the tank, where there is little vapor, so an explosion is unlikely.

Adrian_8 i hope your problem is an isolated case. This makes me wonder, do the rest of the XB's use the same pump? Has anyone else heard or had this issue before?

I posted this problem a long time ago as I had a similar issue. My pump didn't fail because only the ground wire shorted which caused the pump to run continuously before starting the engine. It's supposed to run to build pressure then shut off until you start the engine with the key on and the run switch in the run position. I even posted a picture of the offending wires where they run through the metal keeper on another pump I bought off ebay.

My pump was replaced under warranty but I don't know if the new one is any different.

I agree there needs to be some type of anti chaffing material to protect those wires and I even stated that in my earlier post. I guess the factory knows this by now or at least they should since several pumps appear to have been replaced since then. I however doubt they will recall on this because I think it's hit or miss if they will actually fail on all the bikes produced.

They should do something about it though. You would think they would have learned from previous experience about reliability issues from the tube frame days......It only takes a few bad ones to screw up an otherwise good reputation.....

Don't know but I don't think anything was changed in the fuel pumps for 07....

I could be wrong though. Did sombody say there was a part number change?

If it is true, about the chaffed wires causing the bike to "flame out" then a recall would be indicated. Refer to the BAS recall symptom. A defect of any kind that causes sudden engine stoppage, will eventually trigger a recall.

One could be in the works as we speak/write.

I wouldn't choose the expression "flame out" when talking about the result of chaffed wires inside the gas tank.

I received a recall notice from Harley Davidson Japan last week and on Friday received another notice that my bike is not part of the recall. The Japanese was vague, but more or less said if I would like to change my fuel pump it would be done at no charge. So I called the dealership yesterday and they said they would replace. It`s going in next Sunday. I guess it will take about 2 hours to do it. By the way I have an 07 XB12Ss.

Flame, burn, melt, smoke, fire etc., are some of the key words used during discovery...

I don't know what the defect threshold is for this type of problem, as it would relate to a recall. But it can't be that large a number...

Ford Crown Vic's and Mercury Marquis, have the same problem, fuel sloshing in the fuel tank pushs the wires up against the sharp fuel sending unit bracket and they short out. How many hundreds of thousands of that series cars and nothing yet!

But is is something to look for and devise an insulator when replacing the pump.

Just talked to my dealer this morning. They will not have a new fuel pump until 6/15, apparently with a new part number. Seems that Buell has recognized this and is correcting.

I wonder if they're going to replace all or just the failed ones?
Mine got replaced under warranty but I think it was before the new part number and now my warranty is just about up.

Well at least it's pretty easy to get to and doesn't require removing the rear swingarm like the other XBs require.
I think I'll just take care of the problem myself this winter.
