When I was first considering a Uly, in the fall of '05, I went to the local dealer in Worcester, MA to look at one. While I was there, another former S3 rider came over to check it out. He concluded that it was too tall for him. If it had been lower, he might have been a little more inclined to investigate further. (if they had a better salesman at the time, he might not have walked away as quickly, either)
My wife wants another Buell, but after owning a Moto Guzzi with hard bags, she won't have a bike without hard bags again. She loves my Uly, but it's just too tall. She got the chance to tell Erik that last January, and he said that they'd heard that from quite a few people. I bet we see something soon.

Is it possible to put the Uly fairing, seat, tail, and bags... on a lightning long?

I would think that'd be something simple they could do at the factory, to add a completely new type of bike to there lineup. A true sport tourer.

Or maybe just make it an option on all the lightnings. The Touring Package.

In the latest CycleWorld magazine there is a multipage article about the new Hypermotard Ducati. The designer said this: "My bike could be even taller," acknowledged Terblanche, who is ever bit as tall as I am (6'2"). "But we want to sell to other people. We'd lose 20 to 30 percent of our market if we made the bike to tall."

I'll bet Buell has lost 20-30% of the market because the ULY is too tall. Taller people love the ULY but shorties usually walk away. ULY height is no problem for me but my son won't ride my ULY until he grows another 2 inches. He's 15 and can just tip toe it. He flat foots the new XL1200R we just bought.

Yup. But.... You have to modify the undertail. Since at full compression, it *WILL* bottom out. Even on my Super TT, the Uly tail I'm putting on *WILL* bottom out. And I have an extra inch of suspension travel VS the SS. Stay tuned for pictures and such of my swap.

I am betting we see the H&B Junior bags as an option for the lightnings factory direct. Hell they make the Uly bags. Then you can "sport tour" any XB til your heart is content.

I put the TT suspension on my Uly and I love it. Hello ground, my feet finally touch with ease, not flat foot, unless I touch 1 side only.

Cavi, be careful. Under full compression your rear tire *WILL* contact the undertail with the TT suspension on the Uly.

I think many of you may not realize the Uly is not really that tall compared to the bikes that it most closely competes with such as the BMW R1200GS, the Suzuki V-Strom and the Ducati Multistrada. These types are bikes are tall for a reason, not just to make it tough on shorter people. When I sat on a Uly I was very uncomfortable because it was so much taller than my Harley. After checking out the other bikes and sitting on the Uly more I am finding I am more comfortable with the height. I am 5'10" and cannot flatfoot the Uly, but I can get both feet on the ground (the toes anyway). The Suzuki V-Strom feels a bit shorter to me, so that might be a better fit for those who cannot deal with the height.

steve, it might, but so far, some 200 miles and so far so good. I am staring at the undertail right now and no marks. Also it would have to crush the fender first as it seems to me the fender would hit before the tire hit the undertail. I will keep an eye out for it though.

Also, I do not ride two up, so the weight is not there to fully compress the suspension, this might be partly why I am not hitting the undertail. Anyway if it does then I will mark where it hits and heat it and bend it.
