After a long weekend trip, I noticed that my fan is now making a ticking or clicking noise that I can hear over the fan motor whine when I turn the bike off. To me, it sounds like it might be the bearings in the fan motor. FWIW, I've now got about 6500 miles on it.

So, those of you that had fans die prematurely - is this what fan death sounds like, or am I just being anal?

Mine's been making that clicking for over 10,000 miles. It hasn't died yet; but I expect it to. Hopefully before the warranty runs out.

Ah...the death rattle has begun.

Get it replaced before it dies.

Yep. Death is eminent!

Replace it while it's covered.

Search for the Fan Death thread. Your mileage is just about right.

Get it replaced before it dies.

My dealer won't replace it until it dies.
As I said, it's been doing it for over ten thousand miles.

Get a different dealer. I pulled into the service bay of my dealer, the first thing out of the service guys mouth was, "Dead fan!".

They replaced mine without question. What is the deal with this, "Wait till it dies" crap. If it's making an unusual noise, then it's clearly bad. Replace it and make the customer happy.

Mine's been doing that now for close to 15,000 miles. If it's going to die, I hope it does so soon. I've got 3 months left on warranty.

Yep, the fan on my Uly started making clicking sounds @ about 6k miles. Just turned 7k today, noise has not changed, and can still only hear it when fan goes to 1/2(?) speed with keyoff.

Anyone just removed the fan and left it off yet?

My dealer didn't even have to hear it. I just called them and told them it was going bad and they ordered a new one.

Dave
I had mine replaced @12K.. it was making odd noises (not clicking), but more like an electrical motor that was bogged down (and not 100% of the time). My dealer replaced under warranty .. no questions asked.

Dave.. Not sure who your using locally but SMHD took care of mine.

Gamdh,

Mine did the same thing. No death rattle, but it did the bogging down, variable speed thing. Like pulling teeth trying to get it replaced.

Motornoggin..

Sorry to hear that... I was actually very surprised when they did mine. They said although it didn't 'die' they did hear the noise and went ahead and replaced.

I'll probably wait until I take it in for the next service and see what they have to say. It sounded like it got a bit worse over the last few days, so hopefully it will hold out until then.

Noooooooooo, your fan can't be dying! Didn't you see that Ft_B and ChadH might be coming down to NGA this weekend?

How many miles do you have on dirt?

Has anyone out there put together a correlation for fan death vs dirt mileage?

I have 0 dirt miles - shameful but true. I figure if I'm gonna dump a bike on dirt, it'll be my cheap, already ugly KLR.

My fan doesn't really sound *that* bad (clicking, but no apparent loss of speed), so I'm not too worried about it taking a dump on me yet.

This, I can fix. Just leave your bike in the driveway. Don't worry about the key, because I probably still have one from the test ride.

FYI, garage arrival temperatures with race ECM and right side scoop were very similar to garage arrival temperatures with stock ecm and no right side scoop. The temperature was 397F. The only difference was that the race ECM scooped bike was silent and the stock bike had the fan running. It is my opinion that a right side scoop is not necessary but it is quieter.

The difference is:
Scooped, race ECM: temp sensor stable, or increasing at 397F
Unscooped, stock ECM: temp sensor stable, or decreasing at 397F

And,
My height: stable, or decreasing at 5'6"

the new Ducati Hypermotos have an option for a USB thumb drive data logger...this is certainly the coolest selling point for the bike...

I put a lap top in the top bag and ran numerous logs with TR's VDSTS Pro USA. My data on the stock ECM scooped and un-scooped was checked after hours of riding in similar ambient temperatures. 397F-403F was the common denominator. I checked my garage arrival temperatures hundreds of times. The issue is noise or fan wear time which is the substance of this thread. Thanks for the reply.

If the fan needs to run, let it run. I don't mind the noise or the fan wear (it runs most of the time while I'm moving too). I'd much rather replace a fan if/when it fails than have high-ish temps and no airflow when I pull into the garage.

Aw, man, why'd you have to go and tell me that? I was doing so well behaving myself and resisting the urge to go and check out the new Ducs and Huskys at Atlanta Triumph Ducati.

When I was preparing to go out on a longer ride, I just stopped by Winchester HD/Buell and they changed my fan just in case it would have gone on the trip. Same clicking noises had started at the 1/2 or sub sonic fan speed.
