Hi there,

New Ulysses owner here, thought I'd sign up, and unfortunately my first post is a sad one (I'm mwd on advrider for those that frequent there).

When cleaning my bike last night I noticed that on the rear of my exhaust the paint is coming away and it's starting to rust. The bike is jut two months old and has just done it's 1K service.

Looking about it would appear that I have two options, given I'm under warrantee. Under warrantee, as I understand it, I have the options of:

1) Get the exhaust replaced.

2) Get my current exhaust ceramic coated.

If I go for option 1 I presume that I'll be back in this position again in a few months time. :/

if I go for option 2, I'm concerned that whilst I shouldn't attract new rust, the old rust is still there, and likely to lead to problems further down the line when I'm not under warrantee.

Any thoughts on this?

Anyway, hello to one and all. I love my Uly - shame about the rust : )

It's not the rust you see, it's the rust you don't see that is to worry about.

Get a replacement muffler whilst you can.

Do they all rust? I traded my 9SX with close to 10k miles, no rust there. Uly, also two months old with 1800 miles, rust on the back and bottom. What gives? Who has gotten a replacement with no questions asked? It is still functional obviously, so the only concern is cosmetic. I try to keep the bike clean, but the brown pipes, (always been an issue for me) now the rusty can. The two X1 models, the 2000 Millenium and 2002 White Lightning came with a coated header, why
can't that be standard issue?

I've had mine replaced with no questions asked. The service writer even trusted that it was rusty. (really he just didn't want to lay on the ground and look at it.)

He told me that the muffler is only replaced once during the unlimited mileage warranty.

The second muffler has been rust free for about 6 months now.

Dougal - There is a third option, which is to get your muffler replaced and then ceramic coat it. I don't think you need to do that though, particularly given you only have 1000 miles on the bike.

I just got mine coated, and I'm very happy with it, so let me talk about that. When you send them something to coat, they blast all the paint/rust off. Apparently a lot of their business is coating used parts, so they are good at cleaning things up.

The coating keeps the metal from rusting, it provides thermal insulation, it's very durable, and it looks great. It's also inexpensive. I think HPC charged me $55 to coat my Uly muffler.

The only downside is waiting for the muffler to come back.

Do they all rust?

Yes, the Ulys seem to have rusting mufflers.

I think the Uly's are more likely to be ridden in the rain and to the point of having the muffler submerged in water.

Ride it through lots of mud and you will never see the rust.

Thanks a lot for the advice. I'd decided to go for the ceramic coat and called up my dealer. They were very good, and they've ordered a new exhaust and ceramic coating it.

Of course, I know that ceramic coating isn't perfect and it'll eventually chip to, do I guess I need to keep an eye on it. Or get some serious farkle!
