Two things:
1. I noticed that the bolt used to tighten the primary chain was loose. I checked the chain tension and it was really loose. I tightened it per the specs in the ULY service manual. Afterwards I noticed that the engine rattle was gone. Note the rattle I am speaking of is not the dreaded ping.

2. I changed the transmission fluid after 5000 miles. The fluid was black and there were lots of metal flakes stuck to the magnet on the plug. Is this simply clutch material from normal use? Or is it wear from the loose chain?

44 Mag,

I always seem to find bits of metal in primary oil on the mag plug. It was the same with a HD Sportster that I used to own. I think that it is from the chain tensioner as it runs in chain to fixed metal contact mode.

Anyway, it is normal. Just keeping changing it on schedule, clean the metal bits from the mag plug and all is well.

Yep, I've change my oil and the primary probably five time in 9000 miles and always have little metal shavings on the plug and in the oil. Seems that's the norm.
