I finally got some seat time on her yesterday after finishing the wardens work list. Ya know yard work, trimming her little pain in the sack dogs ass hair...ya now all the good things in life.

I got to put about 100 miles of all back road riding on her and some things really stand out to me.
1. I am know a disciple of Mr. Buells philosophy on how to build a bike. The handling had me grinning from ear to ear. Being a larger type gentleman (6'5" 240lbs nekid) I have always struggled with riding position and setup on todays sporting motorcycles. I did not change the suspension as much as 1 click and the only thing I have to say is WOW. Very confidence inspiring from upright to the edge of the tire. Once I was somewhat comfortable I upped the pace somewhat and the back end got a little iffy coming out of corners on the gas. Will have to make some adjustments I am sure do to my size. But I can basically put this bike where ever I need to A+++ in the handling department.

2. All the hoopla about this bike standing up on the brakes probably applies to 1% of the street riding public. If you are trailbraking that deep and fast on public roads to get this bike to stand up then you need to book a day at VIR or Road Atlanta.

3. Yes the fan is "that freakin loud" but a small price to pay for a bike this freakin fun.

4. LOOOVVVVEEEE the motor. The MTS revved a little quicker but I think this little torque monster that Buell has built is a much better powerplant. Through in the fact that a guy like me would be taking the Duc into have the service done sometimes three times a year at $800 a crack....well you get the picture.

5. I could never come to grips with the seating position on the Duc. The ULY fits me like a glove. I may have to try a couple of different handlebar bends to get it perfect....but for now I will leave it alone. Just do some tweaking on the suspension and get on with it.

6. Maintenance!! What maintenance?? The bike did not come with an owners manual and my dealer (Shenandoah H-D who happens to rock) did not have one in stock so I ordered both yesterday. The only things I have noticed being mentioned a lot on BWB is be very conscientious about the oil level. If you folks have some more "must have" info for me covered in either the owners or service manual please let me know.

So in the end I am 120% stoked about adding this bike to my stable. I have not found anything about it that I do not like as of yet. I plan to do the obvious upgrades in time but for now I am just going to ride and enjoy. Thanks for letting me ramble.
Peace Ken

Sounds to me that you get it when it comes to the Ulysses.

If you can cancel the owners manual order, I will give you my old one. I totlaed out my Uly a couple of weeks ago and I will be getting a new one next week. You are welcome to have my old one.

These bikes are very simple to maintain, the full shop manual is a very well written
with good clear step by step instructions.

I'd also get the parts manual since at most dealerships you are much better off having
the part number in hand when you walk in the door.

A good quality t-27 torx wrench is also a very good idea. The one that comes with the
bike is OK, but you will strip fewer heads out with a good quality (t-27 torx) wrench.

You've already found one of the best sources of information about all things Buell...

Hey Chris that would be most excellent. Do you have a paypal account? If so email at tribal360@hotmail.com and let me know how much it would be for you to mail it and I will send you the money to do so. I will also hook you up with my address. I should be able to call the dealer today and cancel that order. Thanks Dude.

I am already well versed and ready to roll in the torx wrench department. Harley uses them every-freakin-where on my 06 softail.

Loved your write up - I'm on the cusp (this week) of making the buy myself after TWO years of research. Boiled down to analysis paralysis - decided to go with my gut, and my gut says leave the herd behind and go Uly. I test rode one as my final ride before buying (other test rides included 1050 and 955i Tigers, BMW R1200R, Multistrada 1000 and DL 1000 V Strom) and absolutely loved the Uly - from the little shimmy at idle to the bend and snap on the throttle. And believe it or not, even liked the fan noise - let me know things were working right. Also rode the new 1200 Bandit because I could, and it scared the crap out of me - that much goose at that quick a throttle response left my 53-year-old balls sucked up higher than the crowds at a Jimi Hendrix concert. Anyway, I'll post my progress as a Uly owner from time to time and let you all know how it's going.

Hooliken, be careful posting your email address on the board there are "bots" out there
that scan boards looking for email addresses and then the spam begins!

if you need to do so write it out in this kind of format:

emailaddress at internetservice dot net

or something similar. or PM the individual by left clicking their user name and then clicking
the "click here" text to send a message to the email account they registered with.

The Dispersive welcomes you! ;)

If it's an 06 leftover, you will want:

07 Airbox and ECM Reflash
New Tires (D616's suck)
Lyndall's Brake Pads (don't wait, get them now)

If it's an 07:

Lyndall's Brake Pads

She is a lightly used 06 (2500 miles). The original owner already scrapped the 616's in favor of some Conti Road Attacks. They seem to work OK. Had her on some dirt roads today. Being a street tire I was expecting the worst but she handled just fine. (the MTS with Syncs on it was complete crap on anything other than pavement).

If I get the race ECM will I still have to have the reflash done. I will assume that this something I have to let the dealer handle? If so do they charge as much as the Harley downloads?

Any aftermarket options for the airbox or am I better off ordering a new one from the dealer?

Actually, Ducati maintenance on the 07's are about the same as the Buell, but you have to pay in Euro's! Actually, having owned 4 Ducks, the high maintenance cost is more myth than reality.

But, I just had my 5000 mile service on the Buell and it was just $200 and the 600 mile service on the Duck was $240 and will not need service again until 7500 miles.

It really all boils down to what moves your soul. Both being air cooled V-twins have that special sound that no other motor can come close to matching.

The Uly came down to comfort for me, then the rest of the package was icing on the cake. The Duck (GT1000) was due to being in high school when the first GT750 came out and the lust for that carried over 30 years later.

We are truly in the Golden Age of Motorcycling. It is a wonderful time to be a rider. I may even have to buy a Jap bike to see what surprises pop up.

Hooliken,

You will not have to have your ECM reflashed if you buy the Race ECM. The reflash basically takes your stock 06 ECM and makes it think it is a stock 07 ECM.

The 07 airbox has approximately 21 square inches more open area than the stock 06 box. Some have used a drill and hole bit. Since the 07 airbox is only $35, I chose to simply buy one rather than swiss cheesing my original box.

You can do open airbox kits as well, but it is a more radical modification and will definitely require either a reprogramming of your stock ECM or a Race ECM.

I went with the 07 airbox in that it was the least expensive and easiest to reverse modification.

If you go with the Race ECM, you will need to wire open the servo flap in your stock muffler. Better yet, do a Special OPS, D&D, or Drummer muffler. I hear that each of them is sought by Weyerhaeuser folks in that they are good to produce instant wood. ;)

Thanks a ton Chris. I am one of those who prefers to do my own wrenching unless it is a warranty issue. My bike is also plagued with the "ping" gremlins so I may try retarding the timing like has been suggested.
