I have ordered the ulytility bar and was planning on mounting the PIAA 1100X on top and the 1400 fogs on the bottom. Does anyone know if this is OK?

Wow that is a bunch of lights. I have the 1100X and consider them to be one of the very best available and put out a tremendous amount of light.

But can they be mounted from the bottom instead of the top?

My plan is to use the 1400's with low beam and 1100X with high beam.

I have mine mounted right side up. I made a bracket out of aluminum stock.

I have seen others mount them the other way, so you shouldn't have any issue doing that.

As for mounting both sets, I think that may be too much weight. My 1100X's shook a bit at idle and 3500 rpm, until I rubber isolated the mount using some scraps from a heavy duty tube. With two sets of lights I would think you may shake enough to strain/crack the aluminum over time.

Yes, it actually works better that way. If you try and mount the 1100X lights on the top, you have to mount them far enough forward that the wires on the back of the light clear the lip of the bracket. This may cause the foot of the light to protrude past the front of the bracket. You will also need to disassemble the light an flip the lens so the drain hole is on the bottom.

If you mount the lights from the bottom of the bracket, none of this is an issue.

I think two sets of lights may be too much for the bracket to handle. Try using just one set, the ones you think will be most useful.

Gail,

Don't you have the 510's on your Uly? I can't believe that they wouldn't be as heavy as both the 1400 fog and 1100x driving, but I have not picked them up to know for sure. Thanks for your input.

If anyone knows for sure the weight I sure would appreciate any more input.

I never really understood the reason for having aux lighting on a bike. Too many lights for me, more stuff to break or get hung up on something. More load on the charging system.

With just two quality headlights and 200 watts, you could harness the power of the sun.

Here is what the DeathRay looks like in broad daylight, after installing relays and dedicated #12 wiring.

I guess I do it because I want to be more visible, and see better at night. I like your death ray setup, but it was easier and cheaper to go with a set of aux lights.

I actually have a hid low beam, and a set of pilot driving lights from auto zone.

Someone wanted those big old dinosaur piaa lights more than I did, so I sold them.
I find that there are cheaper and more efficent lights than the piaa 510/520 series lights. I think they are more "fashion statement" than anything.

Give me a set of lower profile lights, like the hella ff50's. Less strain on the bracket, less to push through the air, and less money, for just as much light.

Tredmarks,

I prefer to stay legal. Aux lighting (fog and driving) and stock headlights is legal even in California (just read the codes last night). I know that you have not had any problems with the LEO yet, but I prefer to stay with legal lighting, even if it does consume more power.

I understand the visibility factor alright.

Before the DeathRays I would get cut off by some cager several times a day. Now it only happens every now and then.
When I am running in the left lane lately, cagers are actually moving over to let me by.
Must be the heat on the back of their necks.

Just fitted some fog lights to my Ulysses & the wifes XB9 city X.

They are more for visability to other road users than extra beam.
