I just bought a 2007 XL1200R Sportster for my wife and I'm breaking it in the motoman method. The mirrors have way less vibration than my ULY. Darn near perfect in fact. The gearing is close also. 4000 rpms in 1st is 30 mph. 70 mph in 5th is just over 3,000rpms. Doesn't have quite the hard torque power delivery of the ULY but is plenty fast for its frame and my wife. Nice bike with first year fuel injection. Great out the door price too of $8500, and yes, I still owe city and state sales tax of 7.5% but that is still a great price.

Congrats to you - and your wife - on the new bike.

I've been looking at the same bike - and the 883R - as a round-town commuter with future plans of adding a hack. Thought about the 1200N, but as nice as it looks, it's just too low.

How does it handle? I hear the stock suspension is pretty average. Are there any hick-ups or stumbling with FI?

Be interested in your thoughts once you've had some more time in the saddle.

REALLY wish HD would sell the XR1200 here...

Cheers
-Jack

As a former 883 owner, I can tell you , my experience was that I bought the wrong bike. Three months after getting and riding bike, once I got used to it, I realized I wanted a bunch more power. I should have bought the 1200 to start with.

I too lust for the XR1200 and hope that it finally gets made and sold here in the US.
The XL1200R handles pretty good but it ain't like the ULY in terms of power and handling. It's just right for my son and my wife. The only thing that might be a problem is that small gas tank. The 2007 has the fuel pump in the tank and that has to take up so volume. Other than that it is a very nice bike. The Custom models are all more expensive but they only have one front disc and are without the tach. They have more chrome and to that I say "who cares", I love the black engine. The engine is pretty darn strong but as I wrote before the ULY is most definitely more powerful. I anxiously await the XR.
