Yep, deckelhalter (see item 8 in this parts pdf http://www.hepco-becker.de/_eng/Ersatzteile/E-Teil e%20Journey-Koffer%2042_610.080.pdf ) Searched for retention strap etc. here in the BW and didn't turn up any answers. The part looks to be riveted in so I'm not sure what to order. Anyone who has had the side case flop open too fast will break this thing. If anyone has replaced one let me know if Buell caries the part and if it comes with a new rivet.

Yup.

I broke the Deckelhaltern, and didn't know it. Worse yet, the Deckel was dragging on the ground when I made a hard left-hand turn shortly thereafter. Wow, was that ever embarrassing, riding into work with my Deckel dragging on the ground. I'm glad it was dark, and people had a hard time seeing what was going on!

"Remove Before Flight" ...that's what my keychain says, but I probably didn't. In a rush, I think I left my key in the left sidecase on my way to work. At 70mph on a 5 lane suburban Atlanta road, the latch popped open, and the empty sidecase opened up...with so much force that the retention cables snapped (I thought I had run over a huge bolt, or something). I didn't realize what had happened, and made a hard left to make a green arrow, and was greeted with the terrible feeling of grinding my "Journey-Blende" on the asphalt. At the following red-light, I dismounted and proceeded to lock the case...I don't remember fishing my keys out of my pocket, so I'm thinking that I left them in the lock, and that's how it popped open.

Even though it's been several months, I haven't tried to repair the damage, so I have no idea how much it will cost.

Yeah, I broke mine as well. I bought some piano wire to fix it. I'm just going to cut off the plastic part and replace it with the wire. I haven't done it yet, but I will.

My wife broke mine. She put her jacket in the outside part and when she unlatched it, forgot to grab the lid. SNAP....

L_je....thanks for the lesson....I now will keep the trunk-keyfobben on the ringle-dinger with the ignition-keyfobben to prevent the casen-floppen!

Bruce Champion, Parts & Accessory Manager @ Buell, sent me a couple of sets after I broke one. Dave (formerly of Appleton Buell) hooked me up with him. It seems it's a warranty part.

Replace that plastic deckelhalter with a brass plated lid support. Here's what I'm referring to http://www.hardwaresource.com/Store_ViewProducts.a sp?Cat=1125

Here's another example link http://www.vandykes.com/product/02239928/

It knifes shut and will open up to a straight position. Trim to the length you want and re-drill the holes. I've got 4 antique secretaries and they all have drop doors held by these sort of hinges. You might even be able to get a pair of them at Home Depot or Ace Hardware. You won't have to worry about one of these hinges breaking when the lid falls open and the price is very right.
