Guys looking for some insight to the best tie down point for the Uly. Sending one of my PU trucks out to pick one up......Yahooo.....and want to give my guys some info. From the pics of the Uly looks like soft ties to the bars and then ratchet straps from their will work well. Wish I could do the fly out and ride back like I usually try to do but, just cant work it out right now...if all goes well should be throwing a leg over her on Sunday...can't wait  (Message edited by firstbatch on April 18, 2007) | ||

I do my tie downs to the bars, and then wrap one around the top of the rear wheel to keep it from bouncing. It works out pretty well for me in the tacoma. | ||

That sounds good...never have used the low point mount like in this picture  though I did have to go from the triple tree on a Electra Glide... | ||

I like using a bar harness like the Cycle cynch - http://www.af1racing.com/store/Scripts/prodView.as p?idproduct=1674 And watch those ratchet type straps -- I've seen people get carried away and ratchet too much with them. One bad bump could allow the bars to bend, and things can loosen up quickly then.   | ||

I almost forgot, if you can get one in time, these are very handy for trailering AND for use in the garage. http://www.baxleycompanies.com/Sportchock.html You don't need as much tie down pressure on the front end either, just use enough to keep the bike from bobbing around too much. It even comes with tie down hints. | ||

A chock is almost a necessity when hauling a bike. If your "guys" aren't experienced in strapping a bike, I would consider asking the the shop to do it for them. Chances are someone there has a lot of experience securing bikes for transport. My $0.02. | ||

As Chad says soft ties on top of lower triple clamps with ratchet straps..(you wont get into any wires like on the handlebars) and two more soft ties on the grab handles on rear with two more ratchet straps. With four straps she is rock solid. | ||

Thanks, that sounds good.. I will tell the guys to go to those points. Good to have suggestion from folks who have tied this bike down. Dave, wish I could join you on the ride to Raliegh on the Uly.....a few of us rode are K1200GT's last weekend up to Mortons for an open house...lots of fun, weather was poor and it rained on the way home, the big K does real well in the rain so no big deal....but this weekend is supposed to be perfect in the 70's...let's hope the Uly I'm picking does not turn out to be a pinger, only has a 1k miles.  | ||

Firstbatch, Don't worry for one minute about that Uly. If it gives you any pinging problems at all I will be glad to fix it. I still have my software and it is on a laptop so I can bring it to Richmond if you ever have a problem and do not want to ride it until it is checked out. I really think you are going to like the Uly. | ||

In January, I carried my Uly from Myrtle Beach, SC to Bellingham, WA. I used the low tie down method as shown in the picture above. 1. Put wheel in chock, 2. Tie to fork/front axle with soft "hooks" 3. Tied fairly loosely to rear swingarm to keep rear from swinging. 4. I think this is the key, two more tie downs up high to the sides to keep top of the bike from swinging. These ties were looped around the frame struts under the seat and tied into the stake pockets (ie not the floor) of the truck. The idea is to only limit side to side motion, not up down. I wasn't comfortable with having the suspension compressed that whole time and having every bump tranfer to the body. while driving, it was cool to see the bike bob up and down on it's suspension under accel or decel. I figured it gave a better ride. I found this method on some Ducati users group using a google search, but can't kind the link now. Happy travels |
