I'm from New Philadelphia, OH and am looking for someone in the Canton, OH area with an '07 Uly that can help me out with getting a re-flash for my '06.
I've got the bike in for the sensor recall and have an '07 airbox cover on order. I'd like to get a re-flash but Freedom HD/Buell, in N. Canton doesn't have any '07s in stock and have not sold any. So the service guy doesn't have any way to access the '07 re-flash. He's willing to do it if I can arrange for an '07 VIN he can use. If there is anyone in the area who'd be willing to meet me at the dealership, or contact the dealership with an '07 VIN number it'd be a great help.
Assuming there's no one close by, would someone with an '07 be willing to e-mail the Buell service guy at the dealership directly with a number so I can get the re-flash done? As I've been told the VIN is only to tell the computer to use the correct re-flash and isn't otherwise recorded.
Let me know and I can make arrangements with the dealership.

Thanks for any help, folks.
Kevin

I sent mine out to appleton HD to get the reflash. Took 4 days total. I also have an 06, but with the 07 reflash. Not sure if they could just pull my program down for you?

I'd ask them and see, I'd be willing to head out that way...

I'm pretty sure they can use your VIN and change the digit that means '06 to the digit that means '07. I believe that is what my dealer did with mine. From what I understand, it is only looking for that specific digit.

My 06 Uly has the 07 airbox with no re-flash...the bike runs super..my thoughts are if you re-flash it to 07 specs then you make EPA happy...Yes mine uses more fuel than it did before the 07 airbox but it runs much better too. More air+more fuel=faster...thats the way I see it.

Back to the original question. Since vehicle VIN numbers are out where anyone can see them on any bike or car and are only a model identifier, is there someone who'll simply e-mail me with their number so I can use it to get this re-flash?
Otherwise, using Jmhinkle's suggestion, does anyone know what to change in the VIN to identify it as an '07 so we can try that?

Thanks again,
Kevin

Page 16 of my 'international' manual has this:
4MZ DX 03 D * 6 3 7 11000
The 6 after the * indicates an '06 model.
Hope this helps, Matt.

I'll try that.

Still, it'd be nice if someone could send me an '07 VIN, so I could be sure it'd work the first time. The service manager has been very helpful and confirmed with Buell that this works, so I'd like to make his job as easy as possible.
Much thanks to anyone who'd help.
Kevin

My dealer said that he "won't" do the reflash even if I got an '07 VIN.

WTF?

I have a long term relationship with this dealer and was very surprised. Will the great Buell-in-the-sky come down on dealers for making this change?

My service guy seems to have no problem with doing the re-flash. They just need to have an '07 number and have not got one readily available or it'd be done already. Since he's been so helpful to me, I told him I'd try to provide him a new number so he would not have to spend the time.

Let me try a different request.
My VIN# is 4MZDX03DX63703801.
It seems that the VIN doesn't change until the final 8 numbers after the the second "DX" in the VIN. Would someone be willing to provide the first 5 numbers after the second "DX" (to replace 63703) from an '07? I'll use the final 3 numbers from mine (801) and that should be enough to get the software believe it's re-flashing an '07.
If someone can do this I'll certainly let everyone know the results.
Thanks again,
Kevin.

Got a complete 2007 VIN # this morning.

Seems that there are two changes to the VIN.
After the second "D", the "X" (the VIN check digit) changed to the number 5 and the 6 immediately after that changed to 7 (indicating '07, as Matt suggested). Otherwise, everything else is consistent.
I expect those two changes would work for most anyone.

Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

For what it's worth, I had the 07 re-flash done for my 06 uly and had nothing but problems.

I'm now back to a stock 06 ECM and she's riding right again.

Symptoms included

- TPS creep

- AFV wandering down (at one point it read 80)

- Sporadic idling...it would occasionally just bottom out from 1050 RPM to 500 RPM, almost stall, then climb back up

- High idling stuck...on occasion at redlights the idle would never go below 1500 RPM regardless of what I did to the throttle

- Sluggish low end torque

- Horrendous gas mileage...I average a full 25 miles per tank below what I was getting with 06 ECM

I'm certainly not saying you'll have the problems I have and I know a lot a guys on this board are very happy with the re-flash. But, in talkin with Al Lighton at American Sportbike, I learned there is very little difference in the two. Some timing and a few cell changes up top.

I'll also tell you I was looking at everything and anything but the ECM. O2 sensor, head temp sensor, TPS sensor, exhaust and/or intake leak.

Kevin Drum of Drummer Cycles was pretty adiment about the ECM re-flash and offered up trying a stock 06 ECM again. Every symptom is now gone. Bike is riding great again.

It could have easily been my original ECM to be sure...but I will offer that it performed fine for over 4K miles before I did the re-flash.

My $.02 anyhow.

Flyor did you install the new airbox? If so did you keep it?

Flyor,
Sounds like you were too rich. Did the problem cease after returning to the 06 flash without any other changes? I worked on a earlier xb9 with a similar problem. There were no trouble codes and all the parameters of the sensors were perfect. I found about two thimbles full of water in the fuel tank. After draining, flushing and then adding fresh fuel to the tank the over rich condition ceased.

Gtmg - Yes, I've kept the 07 airbox and have had no issues.

Davo - It definitely seemed to be a too rich condition. Nothing I did remedied that until I switched back to the 06 ECM. No other changes were made except a good TPS reset after switching back. Something tells me that it wasn't necessarily the 07 reflash that was the issue but that the ECM "picked" something extra up along the way.

One more question how is your mileage? I know some have complained that changing the airbox lowered their mileage without the reflash..

I'll have to get back to you on that. Haven't run enough through it to really tell.
