Good evening Chaps!
Does anyone here run with one of these natty little belt tensioners? I've been hearing stories of gearbox bearing wear due to uneven tension on the drive belt. Seems like a good idea but I'd rather not have to spend any more money just yet - I'm broke now, new bike, new helmet, need to stop spending!

I've seen the one Trojan has and I love it. I agree with the design but it is kinda expensive to get one in the US now.

By the way, you will never stop spending.

I've seen one on an XB9R with the original breakage-prone belt, which had coincidentally never broken. The owner stated he thought the spring loaded tensioner had a lot to do with preserving the belt.

I'm starting to figure that one out already! Managed to avoid the worst of it on my GS (why do most of those guys spend hundreds on stuff that's not really useful and just adds weight?), so I'll do my best not to with the Uly. Could be tough, methinks!

Muppet,

My 2 cents: This item is a waste of money. A fixed idler pulley is a beautiful thing.

The Buell belt drive system is designed to keep a constant tension on the belt throughout the swingarm travel. I think it works. I have felt the tension on the belt with the bike on a lift (swingarm fully down) and was not alarmed at all.

I have heard of wheel bearing failures but I think it is more likely due to dirt and contamination getting into the bearings than belt tension. I have not heard of any gearbox failures on Ulys.

I would say spend your money on fuel.... It will take you farther.

Seems if it were really a problem, Erik and CO. would have come up with it.

I'd like to have one of those on my 01 S3T! The old tubers don't have idlers at all and I hate the crappy adjustment bolts.

But for my Uly I don't think it's necessary at all. 16K hard miles popping wheelies and all without any problems. Knocks on wood.....LOL!

Going camping this weekend! Woo Hoo!

I've been hearing stories of gearbox bearing wear due to uneven tension on the drive belt.

That link you posted are the first stories of gearbox bearing wear I have heard.

The non-movable tensioner is responsible for the lack of chain lash in the Buell's throttle response. If you make the tensioner movable, it will remove that feature.

I can see how belt life might be increased as you could get some absorption of sock loads that would otherwise be delivered to the belt. Of course the cost of the modification is approximately the same as the cost of a replacement belt.

Great, thanks for the replies guys, you;ve just saved me £75 (about 150 bucks). That's about 5 tanks of gas over here (it's bloody expensive), enough to get me to Scotland and back I reckon.
