Well I am ready to upgrade from the KLR650. The Dealer has an 06 for 10,169 and an '07 for 11,495. The '06 has the '07 seat, and the recall work done. Both new. Is there anything I should know about before purchasing the Uly? Are they both pretty much the same machine? Thanks | ||

The 07 has an improved oil pump (more scavenging capacity), an air box lid with more openings, and a slightly improved calibration on the fuel injection. The 07 has Pirelli Scorpion Sync tires which by 99% of accounts are vastly better than the Dunlops on the 06. Ride 'em both and see if the differences are worth ~$1000+ to you. | ||

I feel that you could certainly demand a better price on the 06, but the 07 is a little high also, especially if they are going to add shipping and set-up charges to the price. | ||

I would make sure they put the Pirelli's on the 06 if you're going for that one. I didn't even wait to wear out my Dunlops before replacing them, and when I did it was like a new bike, much more stable and planted. The Dunlops were way too sketchy, I can't believe they weren't recalled. | ||

My Dunlop 616s lasted 7500 miles and my '06 Uly was dead nuts stable at all speeds up to 100 MPH. I know that a lot of people like to badmouth the Dunlops, but my only bitch was that I like my tires to last 10,000 miles or more. My Uly has over 18,000 miles and is problem free. Try to talk the dealer down to an even 10K, then just try to keep the silly grin off your face when you ride away. Oh, make sure you get the sexier orange bike. | ||

Having a late '06 and a few complaints about it and mostly converting it to an '07 on my own, I would say go with the '07. Either way, the price is too high on both. You can get a better deal elsewhere if they won't come down on it. BTW, I too was a KLR650 convert. I even planned on keeping the KLR after buying the Uly. When I hadn't ridden the KLR a single time in two months after buying the Uly, I sold her to someone that could enjoy her more. Loved the KLR, but don't miss it one bit. Get ready for tons of newbie questions on breakin and such. Good deal. On the break-in: read your owner's manual. The 07 recommended break-in is MUCH closer to "Motoman" than the 06 and earlier version. | ||

Something the manual doesn't say that I think is just as important as the style of break-in is when to change oil. I did the 50-500-1000 oil changes on the engine and tranny going to synthetic at 1K and was amazed at what came out of there. I'm glad someone recommended that to me. If I remember right, it was Mr. Burrito Plate himself, Fat Bastard. | ||

I followed the Motoman break-in and my bike runs great. Very strong, burns hardly any oil, and doesn't ping. | ||

Ditto what Chadhargis said. I never had to add oil to it yet between oil changes and I went once to 5500 miles. | ||

if it were up to me, I would go with the 07. I haven't heard any complaints there, and if you're going to spend hard earned cash, why take the gamble? | ||

I'm with Crusty: I'm about to purchase my third 616 rear. Aside from the quick wear rates, I'm very satisfied with them. Had them up to the rev limiter in 5th many times (oops) and they are very stable, granted I'm used to ridding knobbies on the street at speed. | ||

Are you guys still using the 616 fronts? When my rear 616 is finally done, the front will get changed too because it just sucks. That weird swimming, wandering feeling has to go. It is a shame, because the tire looks like it would go to 12k easily. I actually liked the rear 616 up until I hit about 3k on it and it started wearing funny and feeling squirmy. Upping the pressure a few pounds over the recommended helped for now. It still has decent tread depth and should last to about 6k, but I'm searching hard for replacements and I'm not sure what to get. | ||

Hey,don't forget the 07 has improved front springs as well to stop diving under brakes,it has the lower seat height,(But I still went for the tall one)so after having both models I would take the 07. Oh and by the way you guys don't bloody pay enough for ya bikes,I just did a rough conversion to our Aussie dollar and you'd be paying around $13000 AUD,we actually pay just on the $18 to 19,000 for the bike then add ORC,so ya'll got it good,wish we could get em that cheap. But in esence get the 07,it's got all the 06 mods done to it without having to do it yourself.  Aussie,Aussie,Aussie,Oi,Oi,Oi | ||

I bought the 07. Oh my God this is fantastic! I am in heaven. This machine is extraordinary . I am so glad I didn't get the BMW GS. $11K in California. | ||

Congrats on the purchase. I'm loving mine more and more with every ride. Did some two up gravel roads yesterday and was amazed with the control I had. I don't think my wife liked me jumping the crossroads though.  Jmhinkle: I've done a bunch of long highway stints on my DRZ @80mph+ so the 616 seems very stable in comparison |
