Description sounds like Davo, name is Davo, is it in fact our very own Davo? Sorry to see someone with such a wealth of knowledge leaving.

Jmhinkle,
Thanks for the kind words. I know that I will miss the Uly. I saw a Lightning Long and a Uly while visiting in Phoenix last week and you can bet I had second thoughts. Maybe some day I will get another Buell. I am already thinking about getting another copy of the factory service manual because I will continue to watch BadWeb. The best thing about Buell is BadWeb! If anyone is in Southside Virginia and needs assistance or a TPS reset then remember to call Davo. Thanks all!

Since I performed my own maintenance, Buell has not been very supportive in my pursuit of early problems though other owners find Buell customer service very helpful when going through their local HD dealerships for service. This is the main reason that I am selling the bike.

So curious, leaving the timing as is or setting it back to stock?

I agree. That is a damn shame. Davo always had the answers to the Buell questions. I hope he sticks around.

Are you buying something else?

"The motorcycle has never touched the rev limiter and the engine was broken in with extreme care."

Here's your problem. : )

Carbon build up from a gentle break in and never giving it an "Italian Tune-up" will cause pinging on many bikes, not just Buells.

Sorry to see you selling the bike, especially given how helpful Buell was with Ihavemanyfleas bike. They replaced his entire engine. Wow!

I've only had simple issues with mine that were corrected under warranty. I couldn't be happier, well, yes I could...with another 30hp and 75 fewer pounds. LOL! : )

Chad,
You keep mentioning the "75 fewer pounds".
Back in the days of production class racing (now more like supersport) during practice we used to get a kick out of pulling up along side of someone, and grabbing hold of the rear grab handles, like the Uly has.
The rider would start looking down, trying to figure out what was going on.
Of course, we didn't have mirrors to help realize what was happening, but check yours, --- you may find Fat Bastard hanging on, and you may be able to find a way to lose more than that 75 pounds.

I've heard of flipping the engine cut off switch as you buzz by an opponent, but never heard of holding on. That's funny.

Guess that's like what I used to do in basketball. I'd grab on to the leg of the persons shorts I was guarding. When they tried to jump, OOOPS! Refs seldom caught it. LOL! : )

I remember one time at Bridgehampton, we had a practice session of all experts but mixed bike sizes.
I was on an open class bike, and grabbed a friend's middleweight bike, slowing it down. When he showed the "WTF" look, I then started to accelerate. When his bike started to hit speeds it wouldn't usually pull, he then realized what was going on.
That's when keys started to get safety wired in place.

Damn that's funny!

It's amazing to see what really good riders can get away with. During the track day on Saturday, the rule was to remain 6' apart during a pass. Some guys were not obeying the rule. The advanced group had a 3' limit.

I spoke with one of the control riders, and he said he didn't really get spooked until he started banging handlebars, knees, and elbows with the person passing him. YIKES!

Davo,

Looks like your Uly sold. What will you be riding next?

Happy Trails on whatever it is.

The Uly is sold but is still in the garage and I already miss her. I purchased a 07 KLR650 as a substitute. I wanted a bike that was easy to load and unload off a vehicle. The KLR is 100 lbs. lighter and the wide steering lock makes loading easy for one person. The Uly was too nice a bike with the external frame to bang up in a crowded vehicle. The KLR is a fun bike to ride and has a huge tank. After riding the Uly the KLR seems pretty slow so I named her Slowpoke. I have an XL for times when I need some torque and hear pipes and I can ride my Ultra when I want to go far and hear some "Stones". Again, I will miss the Uly! THe Uly has it all. It is a awesome platform with a torque factory........but the best thing about Buell is BadWeb! Thanks for asking.

Wow....$8500 bucks ain't bad. I paid $9995 for mine new. Nice to know the Ulysses has a good bit of resale.

Of course, I'm put a bit of cash into mine, but accessories don't add much to the price. I have no intentions of sell her anyway. : )

Davo,

Another great bike. I came from a KLR650 to the Uly. The only flaw it had to me was the lack of brakes and not enough power to be on the highway over 75MPH. I changed over to the 320mm brake kit and it helped stopping a lot. I just tried to keep her off the freeway to prevent getting ran over. Mine was a '93 and I did the Doohickey last summer. My Doohickey looked brand new. Some people with new bikes have broken them right away. Something to keep in mind. I still have the service manual for a '93 if you want it. Trust me, they haven't changed much in 14 years.

Davo,

I owned 2 KLR650s, about 10 years apart and they were pretty much the same bike except for the colors.

KLRs are the best bike for the $$$ in the D/S space. They are a lot of fun to ride, have a huge range with that gas tanker fuel tank, and they can do marginally well on just about any kind of ride. The classic weakness of the KLR is the wacky, spongy front brake, the front forks (Flex o matic) and weak fork springs. Despite their flaws they are always fun to ride but you will definitely notice a lack of thrust as compared to the Uly!

Thanks for sharing your insights into the pinging issues with BadWeb and good luck to you with your KLR. You won't have any FI issues with it!

Davo,

Here is a pic of my 06 KLR that I sold to get the Uly:

And here are my favorite tires for the KLR:

They are IRC GP-110s. They do reasonably well in the dirt and they grab nicely on the paved twisties. The cool thing about them is that they have an audible lean indicator. When you pitch it over on it it's side all of the knobs on the edge start to make more an more noise as your lean angle increases.

Jmhinkle,
I have a friend that is a Kawasaki Rep and he informed me that the doohicky was corrected by the factory three years ago. Have you heard of any recent failures?

Windrider,
Thanks for the pictures. I would like some info on your engine guard and hardware for the bags.

Davo,
I have never heard that the doohickey was fixed by the factory as of last summer. They also never claimed there was a problem. I have heard of an '05 with a failure.

Davo,

For the engine guards and all things for KLR contact the good people at Happy Trails.

On the web at http://happy-trail.com/category.aspx?categoryID=72 3

They started their business with KLR parts and have branched out quite a bit now.

Seems lots of people go from a KLR650 to a Ulysses. Thats what I did and don't miss it. If I went the other way I am

sure I would miss the Ulysses. Dynojet offers a jet kit for the KLR with a drill bit to drill out the hole in the slide. This

really helped mine, seemed to have twice the power and would wheelie easily. Here is a video.

Windrider,
Thanks for the link. They have some great stuff for the KLR.

Mramsey,
Thanks for the video. I didn't think the KLR had it in her. I have used Dynojet products in the past. I like the power commander for the Delphi FI Harleys. I have tuned many bikes with their jet kits and have installed their thunder slides. Most folks think the thunder slide is not worth the money but I was able to get many CVs to perform almost as good as Mikunis on XLs and even some big twins. I contacted Dynojet about a Buell USB3 Power Commander and they said that it was not in the works. The VDO-EFI is not as simple to manipulate as the Delphi system. Thanks again.

I had an '02 KLR that I bought used. I quickly ordered a doohicky to replace the stock one. When I got my bike apart, the doohicky was in various pieced inside the engine. Luckily I was able to fish all the parts out. Don't know how long it has been that way.
