Hi I am planning to travel USA coast to coast this summer. Could anybody tell me is there any company renting buell? I found Harleys and Japs but I would like to rent a Ulysses. We will arrive either NY, Washington or Chicago

Thanks very much in advance

Saludos
Manuel

I think you'd find more dealers renting Harley than Buell, and I'll probably be scorned for saying this, but I would almost recommend you do your trip on a Harley. I've owned a Harley, but now have a Ulysses which I wouldn't trade for anything.
But, here's my reasoning:
-You'll probably be riding mostly long straight highways where Harley's are very much in their element. I know the Uly is great for that stuff too, but on an dresser with highway pegs and cruise control you'll be livin it up!
-There are Harley dealers EVERYWHERE, and as we all know, even if they happen to have Buells, they're not always as knowledgeable about them as they are about the the our HD brothers. Problems happen on a long trip, it is good to almost always be within 75 miles of a dealer.
-You'll automatically be accepted in the huge HD rolling fraternity. As a non-conformist myself, I like to stay away from this, but I think it could be cool coming from Europe to have the full USA HD experience, and that probably wouldn't be the same if you were on a Buell. You wouldn't have to start every conversation with other bikers by explaining that Buells are made in Wisconsin too not Japan.

I'm sure there will be many dissenting opinions to my post, but if you want the full experience, I'd go Harley.

Also, I'm 5 hours west of New York City, you're welcome to stop by for dinner or a place to sleep, I've been shown incredible hospitality in Spain (La Granja), returning some would be my pleasure.

good luck!

Question is how much time are you planning to take for this adventure??? Record is a little under 40 hours for San Francisco to New York. Uly would actually be a good choice for this attempt. Carry extra gas. For scenery I would do each coast, skp most of the plains but do run beside the mississippi river for a few days. Rent your motorcycle in each of the regions. I've run across all of the plains states and mainly do it after dark now. Lots of options depending on time, think of taking any of the US two lanes from coast to coast and really get a "flavor" of the country and its people.

Thanks to all for your advice, Eric thanks for the invitation, I am glad you liked Spain. Isaac I also bought the bike at Makinostra. I think we are the only 2 guys with an Ulysses in Spain , by the way I move to the other dealer in Madrid (HD-Capital); too many problems with Makinostra

We plan to be there 4 weeks so I think we can plan an extensive tour. My sergeant..uh my girlfriend said she wanted to see las Vegas ( I am afraid I am gonna be married there AHHHHHH) and the Grand Canyon, so I am free to choose .

I really appreciate any recommendation about places to see/stay...
Thanks

Hey Alatriste,

I would check with the dealers in the WA area. Just go to the Buell website, find the dealers page, then filter results by WA state. My guess would be that you could get a better rate from a WA dealer than from Chicago or New York. I would recommend that you just call a few and tell them what you want to rent. You could probably arrange a pickup from an airport area hotel by the dealer as well.

Oddsc had some good points about renting a HOG instead of a Buell, but I would still go Buell. The Ulys are still very comfy mounts 2 up on the freeway and when you get to some twisty back roads they are A LOT more fun than the Hogs. The only big concern that I would have about heading across the country on a Buell is the scant dealer network and poor service that you will find at most HD/Buell dealers.

I would suggest that you avoid the freeways as much as possible and take the smaller, back roads. You will get to see a lot more scenery and enjoy the ride more.

If you come through Idaho give me a shout and I will take you on some local favorite routes.

Happy Trails.

Alatriste - Dealer here has one Uly in his rental fleet. The dealer name is Shelton HD/Buell in Smithfield, North Carolina. So at least you are close to the Atlantic coast and can head west. Let me know if I can help you.

Hi Carlos Thanks for the info, we try to find a dealer close o our start point. We checked Eaglerider. The good thing of it is that we can pick the bike and drop it in different cities. (We plan to go back to Spain from LA)

Gracias y un saludo

The USA is a big place and 2 weeks is not much time. Why not fly into Las Vegas, go to the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, great rides in Colorado (Durango to Silverton, lots of mountain passes over 3000 meters), back through Utah (Moab & Zion) ending up in Vegas again? One of my favorite areas anyway.

This is my opinion that you may be better off just buying a used Uly and selling it off once you are done with your trip. Here's an example...

Rent a Uly $100 a day + $30 a day for insurance x 28 days $3640
I've rented bikes before. The hidden fees add up quick and turn a $99 a day rental into a number close to $150. Granted weekly rates are less, just remember to add those hidden insurance fees back into the number.

Buy a used Uly for $9000 + $250 for a insurance policy. Ride it for 28 days and sell it for $6800. total spent $2450

Before anyone argues the details of Tags/Title and the time it takes to resell. Its just a simple off the cuff "plan" I'm suggesting not a end all fix. Every plan has flaws and I have pointed out the major ones in this plan.

An easy "out" for the resell is to get the seller of the bike to agree to buy it back at the post tour price. Then all the traveller has to worry about is getting some form of insurance and temp tags for 30 days.

Again I'm not going to argue this idea and I'm sure it has its flaws.

Frankly I'd be willing to take on the role of seller/rebuyer as long as I have US dollars and the license plate in my hand when he drives away.
