I know Chad is looking to strap a set of R wheels onto his Uly for track day purposes. My question is this: Besides the potential for the Uly to be taken on "harsher" roads, is there a reason for the different wheel on the Uly? Are the Uly wheels simply thicker and heavier for this purpose? Conversely, if the Uly is NEVER to be taken down these "harsher" roads, is there a reason S or R wheels would not be ok to use? Are there others here who have done the same? Thanks in advance. |

I've done the homework for you. They are the same size wheels, with the same size bearings, axles, etc. The only difference is that the Ulysses wheels are not machined down as much to make them stronger. They weight about a pound more each than the standard Buell wheels. I basically picked up the R wheels because they were black (which I wanted) and they were cheap. If I'd have found a set of Uly wheels for less money, I'd have bought them. Form amateur track days, one pound per wheel isn't going to make much difference. |

Would you use them other than the track? It might be nice to have a second set for tire swaps and the like. |

Fat, I also looked into this last fall because I want the Translucent Amber wheels on my bike. After almost buying a set off the classifieds page, I decided against it because I was afraid that when my dirt road turns to washboard that I might dent one. If you never take it offroad, the regular wheels will be fine. I might still buy them one day and just take it easy on the road home. |

I would think unless you are bashing rocks with low tire pressure, there should be no problem. A dirt road is not going to be any different than hitting a pothole, and I would hope those wheels could take what the average street can throw at them. DOT has standards that the manufacturers have to follow when making stuff like that, so I wouldnt worry about using the other wheels on the street. Isnt there a guy on here off roading with a city x ? I am guessing he has the stock wheels on that bike and havent heard of problems from him. |

Good point. Ulendo beats the crap out of his, and the CityX uses the same wheels as the rest. I checked the dry weight and the Uly is only 25lbs more. What's interesting is that the gross weight is 100lbs higher. It would make sense given the stronger wheels. |

Lorazepam, Not so. A spoked wheel is sturdier and more resistant to rim denting than what we have on our Buells (including the Uly). Buell knew some of us were going to take the Uly into rougher terrain and they wisely beefed up the wheels. Still, a spoked wheel, as on a BMW GS1200, is stronger. I put a serious dent into the front Marchesini wheel on my S2 when I hit a pothole (it was a big one). I haven't dented the wheels on my Uly so far, it did take a pretty solid pounding on some rocks in Death Valley. I kept tire pressure at book spec to protect the rims, but my handling and ride would have improved had I been willing to drop the pressure down a bit. A guy on this board in Utah who goes by the name EphTwoEight on ADVRIDER dented his Uly rims up pretty well in Baja as I recall. Regards, Jim in Santa Barbara |

Ft_B, Not to be mean, but aren't you almost twice the size of Ulendo? Maybe you want to stick with the beefier wheels, eh? Having a backup set of wheels is a slick idea, even if you aren't planning on doing track days. I've thought about it, but I just don't ride hard enough to warrant an extra set. Hey, I think the 616s are great tires, so it just goes to show you what I know! |

I understand your point Jim, but for street riding, any Buell wheel should be fine. If not,I will not be buying another Buell, because they are dangerous and have sub standard components. I should be able to take a lightning long on a gravel road. If not, I couldnt even ride it home. |

Hi, I guess it depends on how fast you're going and how big the pothole is! I think Buell wheels are "normal" or "typical" of street wheels. They are not normal or typical off-road wheels and I believe that is why Buell beefed them up somewhat. I'm sure I can dent one any time I like - I just choose to ride in a manner so as to avoid that possibility. As an example - out in the desert last weekend on my DRZ I had to cross the RR tracks twice - except there was no crossing nearby. So we pick the best looking spot we can and just pound over the rails. I wouldn't want to try that on my Ulysses. Regards, Jim in Santa Barbara |

Not to be mean, but aren't you almost twice the size of Ulendo? I don't know. Is he a buck twenty without gear? I'm the same size he is when he's 2-up. (Message edited by ft_bstrd on March 07, 2007) |

fats, I have you beat. I weighed 260 in Nov, but I am down to 241. Riding the Uly 2 up was at the limit of capacity, even with a 135lb passenger and gear. It is very comfortable, and much easier to manage at speed than the R1150RS I rode previously. I wont own a bike that cant handle poor secondary roads and gravel. I think the wheels from another Buell will be fine for my needs. I understand the demands you place on your bike. I would not use a set from a different Buell in those circumstances either. A DOT approved wheel should be sufficent for my needs. I guess I should use smileys more often, it is difficult to show facial expression when typing. I like this forum, and look forward to meeting many of you in the future. The Uly to me is such a great machine partly because of the ownership. The community of riders come from a great mix of experience. Factory support is incredible. I look forward to increasing dealer support, the factory is demonstrating they truly are interested in us, and I am sure that will trickle down. I am glad I became a Buell owner, and I am sure most of you feel that way. Sorry for the thread hijack. |

Well I took the plunge. I bought a set of new Translucent Amber wheels complete with new Racetec tires. Because I do zero off road riding, I don't think I will have any problems with them. I also don't do any 2-up riding. |

Got the pulley for my black wheels tonight. I've got to balance them, then toss them on the bike. Might break down and put them on anyway. |

C'mon. Mount 'em up. You know you want to. You will need to post up in the "Custom XB" thread. To date, I think yours will be the first without stock wheels. |

Holding my breath to see if BMC makes the Uly wheels black for 08. Then I can just buy them rather than having to get them powder coated. |

Cool...bring 'em over and I'll cart them to Mike's when I go this weekend. We'll get you some fresh rubber mounted and balance them. |

I already have the new Avon Storms ready to go! I'm waiting on my rotors, hardware, and Lyndalls to come in. Just ordered a Tag bar. We'll see if it's going to work. It's a little lower than the medium Renthal, but it is also wider. I was looking for less pullback than the Rental medium. I would love to have done the same Pro-Taper Typeone did, but I didn't want to have to spring for the fancy fat clamps. Can't wait!!!!!!!! |

Cool! I'm hoping to be heading over to Mike's on Saturday or Sunday. I've got to drop my bike off at Bumpus for the BAS recall at noon, so that will be the bulk of my day Saturday. |

Thanks to Chad's TPS reset, my Uly is a very happy scooter--idles well, hot or cold, and runs strongly throughout the power band without any SNAFU's. The American Sport Bike map is smooth... |

There he is...! TPS reset has worked out well...thanks Chad! The Lyndalls are great, too...thanks Chad! I have more confidence in the stopping power of these LGs over the stock pads (and I really didn't think the stock pads were that bad). I still get the front brake shudder during slow speed braking. If I have to really grab some brake, it is noticeably smoother. I am going to give the LGs more time to remove any "deposits" before making a final judgment. |
