Have you ever noticed that the hand guards on the Uly are asymmetrical?

I kept looking at my mirrors, guards, and levers and couldn't figure out why they didn't line up.

I know our bikes are pinnacles of asymmetry, but this is strange.

I'm considering removing the hand guards.

I HATE being anal retentive!

Thanks. Did you really have to tell us that? I'm going to make it a point not to look.

FB,

Don't look now but the mirrors are spaced differently, left to right. That's why you can see more from the right than the left. the right mirror is set further out, about 1/4 - 3/16". They have different mounts.

Maybe you already saw that and went to bar end mirrors to keep the symmetry.

Yup, asymmetrical. You can get your guards to line up when viewed head-on, but then your mirror stems are out of kilter.

"Anonymous" addressed this once, and said that the guards are asymmetrical to counter the moment produced by the photon flux of the low beam, and that this is why some people have noticed their bikes tracking slightly to one side when the use the high beam.

Ooh, ooh, I got one! Does the rear tire line up with the centerline of the bike? I dunno, but on Harleys, the rear tire is almost an inch offset from the centerline!

Ooh, ooh, another one: What's worse than asymmetrical hand guards? Asymmetrical sidecase/topcase mounts! I had to put a drill to my right side bracket to get through the install.

I think I noticed that the seat is also asymmetrical as well.

Luckily, I borrowed Costanza's wallet!

I guess the handguards were designed to fit the mounting screws on the levers vs. creating levers with handguards.

I lined up the mirrors first then oogled the crooked handguards.

I'm thinking about buying a Gixxer.

Ive had my handguards off all summer & noticed they werent the same when i took em off. Have always noticed i can see more from right mirror, or all that i need to see anyway, so dont usually look into the left, unless cornering left. Is this phenomenon the opposite in the northern hemisphere? (lol) Now i notice that the knurled part of the handlebars doesnt line up with the clamps that hold them in place! Im just glad to be right handed & a 'natural footer'...

Funny thing; my BMW R1200R's cylinders hang out sideways instead of form a V. Gravity musta set in somehow. Half the rear swingarm is missing, and there is a hole where the rear axle should be.

I've noticed that after a 500 mile day my 06 ULY seat is "ass"symmetrical!!!

Fits me perfectly.

Thought you'd like to know.

Fatty...you're sick man, just sick.

When I installed my Renthal bars, I clipped the tabs off the control pods and rotated my controls and other stuff to the most comfortable angle for me. Didn't really stop to think that both sides might not be at the same height.

Sure enough. My brake lever is lower than my clutch lever, but it feels right to me. I like to ride with two fingers on the brake, so having it a bit lower relaxes my fingers. Having the clutch a bit higher helps me modulate it better.

Looks bad, but works good.

Fatty...you're sick man, just sick.

I figured that there are other anal retentive folks out there and wanted to share my anguished discovery.

I line up the mirrors first which puts both the levers and the hand guards at different angles.

I just couldn't figure out why nothing ever lined up.

Now admit it Chad, my observation is beginning to gnaw on you isn't it.}

Do we actually "modulate" a clutch lever?

Wholly crap! With everything being "off", and now I gotta figure out this "modulate" thing.........oh the stress of it all.......here I've just been pulling mine in with my hand.........can we postulate this at MBIV? Or should we just leave it all behind and have fun.

Oh that's right Chad, you're going to a "track day".

Aren't you SPECIAL!

I noticed how far that the hand guards were off when I put higher bars on my City-X. I drilled the bars for the locater holes and thought I had screwed up that job.

Ft_B, You've had that bike over a year and you just noticed it??? I kinda figured you would have seen it when installing any of your 287 handle bar mounted farkles!

I've noticed it, but I thought it was just me.

I have terminated the life of many socks for having errant toe seams.

None of my shirts have tags. NONE of them.

None of my boxers have tags. None of them.

I have discarded favorite shirts because they have had a hair from a haircut fused into the collar where I was unable to locate and remove it.

Not only am I anal retentive, but I have a mild case of clinical sensory integration disorder.

I thought it was just me.

BTW, there are only 5 handle bar mounted farkles (RAM camera mount, Polly Heaters, HVMP Bar Weights, Touratech handlebar bag, and Rizoma mirrors).

I just ordered a new set of handlebars, though. They are aluminum, so I will have to get the grip heaters.

You want my Polly Heater kit?

Cool! Dual handlebars, low ones for the twisties and high ones for touring. It's gonna look like a klingon warship before too long!

Chad,

Do the controls hold good on the stock bars if you clip off the tab? I would like to rotate my levers down and move the controls a bit because I have long fingers. I was afraid they would spin without the tab.

Fatty,
If you think the hand deflectors on the Uly are crooked, you should have seen my KLR. Lets just say I like my clutch lever way low.

I took some duct tape and put a layer around the bar. The control pod has plenty of bite on the tape. I don't push the buttons very hard, so it works fine for me.

The clutch and brake clamps don't have tabs. They are friction mount only. You shouldn't have a problem rotating them if you only want to move your levers.

Hey Ft_b,

PM me about the heaters, mebby I could take them off your hands at MBIV?

Jm,

I clipped the pin on the one that I errantly drilled (didn't want to drill more holes) and left just a little stock on it so that it would have a bit more grip on the bar, no problem with slipping at all.

F-B,

Something tells me I'm going to regret bringing this up but:

Have you tried wearing your boxers inside out? It eliminates all tag issues. Why they aren't made that way is beyond me.

Some little bastard in a sweat shop somewhere sews those damn tags in with fishing line. The stitches are itchy either way.

To show the depths of my depravity. I actually take a seam ripper to the threads that hold the tags in. No tag. No thread.

Normal neurological process provide an ever decreasing stimuli threshold. After a while of wearing a shirt, you can't feel it, etc. Sensory Integration Disorder provides a lessened threshold decrease.

SID can also manifest in mixed stimuli impulses. My son has SID to the extent that some textures cause him to gag and throw up. On his first birthday, he touched his kid cake. The texture of the icing caused him to projectile vomit all over the cake and himself. I have it on tape. Maybe it'll be worth $100,000 one day.

Made a remark about water beds to a kid the other day, and he had no idea what I was talking about.

"You mean they used to fill a mattress with water? That would be awesome!"

Yeah kid, and there used to be a box at the head of beds in motel rooms that made the bed vibrate. Thanks for reminding me I'm an old bastard.
