From day one my left side bag latch never functioned properly. It would often take 2 or three tries to open the bag when the latch would stick.

This morning, I had the opposite problem. The latch didn't latch, even though the latch was locked. After about five miles, I heard a strange "pop", and thought I had run over a carriage bolt in the roadway, or worse yet, a lag screw. Only when I was making a had left hand turn at speed, about 1000 yards down the road, did I realize what happened. At first, I thought I had blown a tire (the event was about that bad), but then I realized THE LID HAD POPPED OPEN!

The retention wires snapped and the lid buckled under the bike, and the lid handle drug/ground along the asphalt. I'm glad this didn't cause a low-side, as I would have hit a bridge abutment at 40 mph.

Needless to say, I'm seriously pissed.

So, what about complaining to the Service Dept about the latch BEFORE this happened?

I already had some scratches on the bag before the stuck latch really started to bother me. This, combined with the fact that the bag isn't a Buell product, made me believe I would get a "no fault found" response from my dealer (much like what happened when I brought my bike in for ping investigation).

The damage to the bag:
-two snapped retention wires
-the grey portion of the lid is worn to the bone
- and a latch that NEVER functioned properly
- funny about the latch... NOW it doesn't stick!

So, if you have a latch that isn't functioning properly... stop "living with it" and GET IT FIXED IMMEDIATELY.

Looking at the cases in the daylight...

I traveled about 6.5 miles with the bag closed, making a whole bunch of turns at respectable speed. About 1000 yards from work, on a straight stretch, that's when the lid popped open. It popped open so hard that the retention cables both snapped, and the lid rotated 180º into the full-down position. ...This is the only way I can put all of the pieces of the puzzle together.

I'll try to post some pics.

Looking on the bright side: I had opened the left case that morning to pull out my heated vest, so the case was empty when it opened up!

Did you ever have your dealer look at the bag latch? If so, what was their response?

I just found out from Andy today that you cannot purchase just the decorative silver part of the bag. I even called Buell customer service to verify this. So don't get any scratches on these panels, or you will have to purchase the entire bag!

I never had the dealer look at the latch.

I'd rather have them spend time trying to resolve my ping issue. Riding the bike for 10 miles in <50ºF temps and then saying they can't find any problems just doesn't cut it. Especially when Buell CS called them ahead of time and gave them a list of things to go through.

The left side latch hang-up was always just a nuisance. It even popped open once before, in a parking lot....maybe I should have taken the hint, eh?

Does anyone else out there notice that their left sidecase tends to leak water?

You cannot purchase the just the silver part of the bag with the Buell logo on it. However, you can purchase replacement parts for the bags from eurotechmotorsports.com. They do not carry the "Buell" logo silver part, but loosing the logo is cheaper than replacing the entire bag. When our bag was damaged, the gray rubber bumper looked the worst. When Daves couldn't get the part, we found that Eurotech could.

My theory is that sooner or later, they will start showing up on e-bay, left side then right ride....

I'd sure love to get my hands on a Uly and set of bags to better understand this.

I'd like to see a photo of that damaged bag. If you have one, send it to me at court@canfield.net

The bags should NEVER leak.

Court,

I'll send you the photos. This is way safer than someone else trying to demo what I did!

Like I said, I closed and locked the latch, but the latch wasn't fully seated. I probably didn't give it my usual "just in case" tug to verify that it was in the "up and locked" position.

Oh, yeah, and I can reproduce the water leakage pretty easily. Though, with my mishap rate, I might want to have EMTs on standby, just in case.

Thanks!

Totally fix-o-matic . . . just don't do what I did.

I had a set of prototype bags on an S-2 and rolled out at 3AM one morning to make dinner with the Buell club in Atlanta.

I'd foregone, given the 100'super{o}F temps, my pre-flight and headed down the Blue Ridge Parkway is a mystical mist, myself in a lingering sleep like mental fog.

I felt something that reminded me of piloting a plane when the jumpers exit the sidedoor. Just a mild shift in balance.

I looked in my mirror to see the bag, supported only by the wire tether, bouncing off the pavement.

The laptop and a couple Aerostich soft sacks were gone.

I took my flashlight and began walking back down the highway and there was the ThinkPad just off the shoulder of the road. I opened it and it worked perfectly. Kudos to IBM.

However the bottle of Polo cologne in one of the fleece stuff-scaks fared less well and essentially wicked, during my 850 mile day, into about everything I owned.

By the time I got to Marietta, GA it was sweltering hot. As the group walked out of the restuarant, in the world where tea is either sweetened or unsweetened, and we approached the S-2 the first comment was . . . "that's the best smelling motorcycle I've ever been around".

For me it was just another day on the road. . . but then again, I'd started the trip by waving to the press as I dragged my luggage behind me and ran two Motorola cellphone batteres through the belt on Fairlawn Road in Topeka, KS.

Remind me to tell you sometime . . .

Arrrrrrrrrrrrghhhhhh. . . I am a VICTIM!

Court,

That is a great story.

Where you went wrong was packing the Polo in the first place. Bikers should only smell of burnt rubber, 20-50W and smashed bugs.

Court,
Please write a book entitled; "Do you remember when I asked you to ask me to tell you about it sometime?"
Dude, you could retire!
