I had a chance to speak with CS today about my pinging bike, and I wanted to give you guys some feedback.

First, I am impressed with the level of support from buell. These guys are seriously committed to us as riders of their product.

Second, I want to encourage anyone that can help buell identify the ping ussue to do so. With your help, we can get this figured out, and help provide a solution.

What other company is this commitied to its consumers? I hear the argument... if I leave my bike as a ginnea pig to solve this proble, what about my ability to ride it... who is making the payments? Personally, it's more important to me that they are so willing to figure out what the deal is. I hate to leave my bike anywhere, but I want to contribute to the solution. I won't elaborate on their 2 year warrantee for us, but I will say that after my converstation with John today that I'm not worried about running out of my warranty if detonation is the culprit. These guys are commited to us.

I want to reiterate: If any of you have a pinger, and have the ability to contribute, please do so. This is absolutely a unique thing that's going on here. We can prove that the bikes we ride are made by the best manufacturer out there!

Yes, I had a similar experience when I spoke to Buell CR, about my bikes pinging. The agent was very professional and seemed highly concerned about my satisfaction with the Buell product.

I contacted Buell CS last summer. They rebuilt my engine in late 2006 after they found out that my compression was way too high. I have not been able to validate if the ping is gone because of the cold weather. However, I will keep all posted.

Buell went out of their way to address the problem. Hopefully, the solution will work.

I'm glad to see others appreciating the dedication Buell has to their customers. That goes far beyond many measurable aspects of owning a bike.

I have never seen ANY motorcycle manufacturer go to the lengths that Buell does to help their customers.



When's the last time BMW sent a saddlebag latch to a Post Office so that a rider on a trip could replace a broken one?

Where you stated more specifically that...

"The compression was measured at 170. The spec in the Uly manual is 120. This would cause the pinging. "

You may have been misinformed or possibly misunderstood your mechanic.

The compression spec, verbatim from the service manual, for your Uly engine is as follows:

"Compression is normal if final readings are 120 psi or more."

A reading of 120 psi would be at the extreme low end of allowable compression and would indicate a compression ratio of around 8.2:1. Nominal compression for the 10:1 compression ratio Buell engine should be around 150 psi. A reading of 170 psi is not problematic.

Given the limited information, it seems likely to me that excessive oil in the combustion chamber resulting in carbon deposits which created hot-spots would seem to be the most likely root cause of the pinging issue in this case. So oil in the combustion chamber is the root cause, not elevated out of spec compression.

For instance, my Buell Cyclone tests at 180 psi compression; it does not ping, not even on the hottest of Summer days in Texas.

Interesting discussion. : )

It might be helpful if you could have your dealership contact Buell customer service to document this issue.

Would you please clarify who rebuilt your engine? It was your dealership, correct?

That's a VERY accurate statement. I flew to Milwaukee and had a 5 hour meeting with these folks and their leader on 11-17-06. To say they are committed is an understatement. They're slowly getting their hands untied and are as enthusiastic about Buells as you and I. This is s "good thing" and without precedent in the world of motorcycling.
