Hi everyone... I was hoping to get any suggestions you might have on attaching one of these http://www.road-hound.com To my Uly. I've got the carrier with the quick detach plate; ideally, I'd be able to attach that to the triple tail when it was extended, leaving the passenger seat free. I'm not sure that the triple tail would take that kind of weight (About 30 pounds of carrier + 25 pounds of dog) though. Which brings up some other thoughts... 1. Replacing the triple tail with the metal touratech piece and attaching it to that. 2. Attaching it to the back of the triple tail while it was folded over onto the passenger seat (thereby losing the use of the passenger seat when the carrier is installed). Yes, I understand that this project is sort of the "anti-treadmark's tidy tail" HA!  Might want to try the factory rear top box mount, and attach your road hound QD to that. | ||

Yeah, I think the weight limit on the triple tail is 15lbs. | ||

Old_mil, Give the Happy-Trails a look. http://www.happy-trail.com/category.aspx?categoryI D=656 I have a 5 gal fuel cell attached to mine without any problems. Be careful though it makes for some very easy wheelies with the weight that far aft of center. Tim | ||

Hey Fly, Thanks for that link to Happy Trails luggage. That top plate is exactly what I need to get the road hound on the bike. Nice set of panniers, too. | ||

Install wasn't hard, did have some early production run issues but HT customer service is great and they were worked out. The tail rack bolts to the existing beaver tail mount holes on top. It is very tight in there behind the seat latch and HT uses internal wrenching hex head bolts. I ended up cutting a cheap 5/16 (i think) allen key just long enough to fit inside a 1/4" drive socket and still engage the full depth of the hex bolt. This is now part of my tool kit on the bike. You could swap these hex bolts for some grade 8 regular bolts and use a gear wrench. If they ever come back out that is my plan. When you install the side racks keep everything loose until all the bolts are started and then final torque. Oh and use some locktite....not that anybody who works on a Buell wouldn't.  | ||

Mostly the same issues as Buell had with alignment of the side racks and bolt mount holes. They were off by about 1/8-1/4". Doesn't sound like much but it was enough that it wouldn't fit. I loosened every thing I could but I still couldn't get the bolts to start. Called HT and they fixed it buy sending me a new rack for the one side. I have the Teton's 9"W X 15"H X 18"L canyon cut. Reason is because this is my 2nd car and I drive it year round to work. A lot of extra junk sometimes needed and sometimes not. Kind of hard to be 25 miles away at work and wish you packed your rain suit or warm gloves. I am also planning a 45 day trip this summer and will be living off/on the bike so I bought them with that in mind. | ||

Thanks...one more final question. I ride the Uly alright at its present height...can't back it up very well on tiptoe against any sort of an upslope, but I can deal... ...does attaching these bags significantly change the weight or balance of the motorcycle? | ||

(About 30 pounds of carrier + 25 pounds of dog) This is a significant amount of weight aft of center and high up as well. Only you can determine what is manageable and acceptable based on your experience level. IMO unless you pack something low to help offset this your running the ragged edge of the CG envelope. If "sparky" decides to go nuts at the wrong moment...  The empty bags no problem whatsoever, I can see how one would get in trouble quickly if weight distribution wasn't closely monitored when packing. |
