Has anyone gone around the world on a Uly? I think it would be a great bike for that. Actually IMHO Buell should sponsor someone to do the Alaska to Argentina trip and film it. While I would be happy to volunteer, perhaps some one a little more famous would be better. Did anyone se "Long Way Round" where Ewen McGregor and Charlie Borman went through Europe and across the US? Something like that would probably shut up many nay sayers about the Buell. I remember about 25 years ago Nissan did that when they came out with the pathfinder and it was a big hit. BTW if anyone from Buell is listening I could use a better job.

Here's a trip from Washington DC to Argentina. The link gives you more details and pictures from their trip.

John,
Don't know about RTW but there are a couple of us planning on riding the Iron Butt ultimate coast to coast this summer. That's Key West, FL to Deadhorse, AK if your unfamiliar with the IBA. It's going to be my first Uly test to see if it is up to the road conditions for the long haul. Going to try and post the report as it happens if everything works out as planned.

Sorry - didn't mean to bust your bubble. It's been an interesting trip to follow. Can't say it's a trip I could take...I do good to get 100 miles before making M2nc stop.

Fly,

I look forward to hearing about your trip.

ulywife,

I think my back is too screwed up for me to make the trip myself as much as I would think I am still twenty, that was a long time and a lot of hard miles ago.

I was thinking about a UCC ride, but the web says that you need one smaller ride to pre-qualify, I did the smaler one 1000miles/24hours and i'm planing the 3000miles/72hours for next summer, the UCC will be for 2008.

There are actually 3 different "similar" rides underway in various parts of the world.

Factories, any factory, generally take the position that it's a cool idea but steer (in my opinion wisely so) clear of sponsorship.

Sponsorship infers a degree of responsibility for anything from hitting a kid in a cross walk to illness on the trip.

In addition, sponsorship dilutes any value . . . "yeah, but it was a factory prepared bike" is a phrase I heard far too many times.

The best, the most fun and the most memorable efforts are the one where a (reasonably) normal person jumps on their bike and just goes riding . . .

I did it, for a 37-state trip, in 1995 and had a ball. Having to "answer" to someone who'd taken a ton of fun out of just waking up every morning and deciding where I'd like to go that day.

Court

By the way . . . . there is generally plenty of "unofficial" (as in I fund it out of my own pocket) support available in the form of "just in case" cases ready to go anywhere in the world on a moments notice in a large custom made Pelican case. Hey. . but you didn't hear it from me. : )

Flynuly, You are going to love that ride to Ak. I did it last year, and plan on returning this year it was so much fun.
I didn't do the ironbut thing, but I did sign some verification papers at Dease lake for a gentleman that was doing the ride you described. Be sure to have good rain gear,
it doesn't seem to stop raining for very long up there. Enjoy!

2_spuds, sent you a PM.

Thanks for the tips I can't wait till May. Been working on the idea of this ride for over a year.

But man did KTM get a huge bashing in the Long Way Round book and DVD, whereas BMW have since capitalised on the success of Borman and Mcgregor so much so the 1150GS has sold in record numbers. Not only that but BMW supported Borman in last years Dakar, where he was in sight of the finish until crashing put him out of the race. This summer the adventuring duo are joined at the hip once again from the top of Scotland to the tip of South Africa.

Yes sponsorship from a manufacturer can be a negative thing. Especially when you can't get your ride 200 miles around Daytona.

Rocket - I didn't know BMW was at Daytona.

Fly - Too cool - I wish I could join you. One day I will have the available funds and time to get away for that long of a trip. A coast to coast trip is something I really want to do.

M2nc- I wish you could join me too. It would be a hoot. The guy who was going with me had a schedule change and can't go until Aug-Sept. I have saved most of my vacation for the last 3 years to make this trip happen. Kitchen pass approval is/was the biggest challenge.

Sure; don't you remember the Battle of the Blimps from about five years ago? Or was it called the Teutonic Turdfest? I remember that the droning put me to sleep, so I never figured out which Flying Urinal won.

Flying Urians? You mean those BMW's with GP stars in the saddle at ever GP round?

Yeah, terrible marketing that was!

What's a Urian?
I didn't see any GP stars at Daytona. However, with the slow cornering speeds and the monotonous Dirigible sounding engines, Agostini himself might have been there, and the entire stands would have slept through it, and missed seeing him.

We've just done Australia-Malaysia-Thailand-Laos-Cambodia and am planning the next leg, eventually to circle the globe via a few side journeys, North America then South America, Europe and Africa etc!

Apologies to any one waiting for our trip report, got back to work and straight into 12 hour shifts 7 days a week!

Here's us getting across the Mekong in Stung Treng, Northern Cambodia!

Mekong Dreaming!

Rocket - I hope you know that was tongue and cheek!

I was there at Daytona last year for the FX race and no - BMW was not there. Maybe this year though? There is a guy that races basically a new stock R1200R and an old Cup series boxer before that. It is hilarious watching him run down some of these race trimmed 600cc. He did have to raise the bike considerably though so he would not drag the jugs of the motor around the curves.

Fly - How long are you guys planning for the trip to take?

Brat - Yeah have you posted your trip pictures here or on Advrider.com. I saw a few updates but have not seen the rest. If you are planning more then the "first" leg must have gone pretty well.

Brat- you are living the dream--RTW that is, not the 12hrs 7 days a week as that is reality in my world. Look forward to the report when you have the time.

M2nc- 45 days is the current vacation plan.

The trip was fantastic, should have allowed 6 months (as originally planned) instead of 6 weeks, work has dictated the time!

The roads were better than expected but suited the Uly, unmade roads we left everyone for dead, in hindsight we probably sped up as the others slowed down!

We're saving to buy a travel agency so that we can combine business with pleasure!
