Hardly breathed on it.
What was the deal?
Were they fixing them under warranty did someone say?

It doesn't take much to snap one.

The replacement latches seem to be heavier.

I think these should have been metal instead of plastic.

I've had the latches break on both saddlebags!! Now I keep ratchet straps under the seat just in case I need to strap them closed again!

I tried to shut the top case with a jacket cuff interfering and it snapped..fixed under warranty...they are very fragile.

When I first found out about these things breaking I made up a strap for each side that will keep the lid from opening if the latch breaks. I have them positioned so that in the improbable event that a case were to fall off the bracket it will hang free of the ground. Hopefully I would notice such an improbable event...

A bungee looped from the front sidecase-bracket-to-bike, around the case handle, and back to the rear sidecase-bracket-to-bike will hold the lid tightly closed.

My retention strap setup:

Bungee "latch":

Yeah - I got home with a Bungee latch.

Have had an email. Not happy it broke - VERY happy with the response.

I spent the weekend out riding just as much as possible. Even in the February rain. It was great fun! Right up until my latch broke. Looks like I will have to have a chat with the dealership on tuesday.

I've broken two latches since it's gotten cold here in VA. Both times it's been below freezing (thank you WIDDER) when the latches have broken. The replacement parts arrived quickly and were replaced under warranty since I purchased the bags with the bike. If you purchase the bags AFTER you buy the bike, the warranty is significantly less.

Early on after I bought the bike, on of the tumblers in the locks started to come apart and it was quickly replace under warranty but I started using the bungees to make sure expensive camera equipment doesn't fall out on the road.

I did - but you know I've had the bike since late '05 and it's only the third time I've used the cases. They have maybe done 10 engine hours work in that time.

>>to make sure expensive camera equipment doesn't fall out on the road.<<

Indeed - and why I had the cases on to start with. Lugging cameras.

all good

Package left today, dealer should see if quickly. I'll ring in the next day or so to confirm all is well.

I contacted the dealership about my latch and they said they know nothing about it but they would check into it for me. I'm more worried because they want to replace only the broken one. Not the other one. What about the top box? Seems like they could save me several trips and them some money by just replacing them all at once. No? I hope they call me back within a few weeks.

Panhead:

E-mail me . . . easy to have fixed in a day or two.

Dealers have been responding wonderfully when presented with the "how to" info. Best gig is to replace both. Quick, easy and simple.

Court

P.S. - when you e-mail me be SURE to put Uly Latches and your name in the subject or I may never see it. Also, all your contact info (name, phone), bike info, year, VIN and dealer contact info. It'll save you and I having to trade 12 e-mails.

I think I missed something. Are people get a beefed up latch as a replacement? My replacements look the same as the originals.

Cheers

Well Thank you very much Mr Court.

It was with some piss taking that i informed my friends at Auckland Motorcycles (Aucklands only authorised H-D Buell Dealer - Buells right by the front door btw) that if they needed to know anything else about 'waz happenin' in the Buell world to just call Big Dave and i'll set them right. ; )

This was when they rang to tell me that a package of 'goodwill' in the shape of some bag latches was in their possession.

If it's any help you can quote me as saying:

It's the sort of service that confirms the brand stays at the top of my list next time I'm looking for a motorcycle.

cheers.

The dealership called to inform me that the latch was in. They didn't seem interested in just installing it while I waited so I could be on my way because the sun came out up here and they were swamped. I picked it up and installed it myself (piece of cake). I'm no longer worried that they didn't replace all the latches because the replacement latch was identical to the old one. Maybe they are only going to replace latches on a case by case basis untill warrantee runs out. No biggie, they are only $20.
