I am considering a new or lightly used Ulysses. Will most likely make up my mind at the IMS show this weekend. I am still mildly interested in the Multistrada, Tiger and KTM, but would prefer to buy American and have good dealer support. I'm 6'4" and have ridden the 2006 Uly and 2005 Multi. Uly is the best fit. I have been riding for over 30 years. Current ride is an Electra Glide, like riding a couch. Before that I had a Suzuki GS1100, beast. Before that, did a lot of trail riding. I have a few questions that I was hoping you experienced Buell/Uly riders could comment on: The nearest Buell Dealer is Lake Erie HD in Avon , OH. Has anyone had any experience with them, good or bad? Other Buell Dealers in this area? I'm thinking about sales and service. I've been getting the Glide serviced at Cleveland HD. They don't sell Buells anymore. Is there anything I should know about the Uly, such as: Recalls TSB Maintenance costs Other possible issues? Extended Warranties? Any other experience you would like to impart would be greatly appreciated! |

At 6'4" if you get the 07 Uly I will sell you the 06 seat, which is rated as the most comfortable stock seat in motorcycling. I am 6 even and have an 06 and got the lower seat so that I could touch ground. There was a thread on the other other board-ADVrider that went on for pages answering your very questions. I am not sure of the correct web address but perhaps someone else can give it to you. |

The black ones do suck somewhat. There are threads in the fairly recent archives covering all of the '06 problems. Seems like they are fixed for '07. I haven't seen a single bitch fest thread on any of the '07's yet. Could just be winter lock down, but I doubt it. The important thing is these bikes are awesome to ride. With your size, distain of couch riding, dirt bike history it should be a perfect fit all around for you. I've ridden for 31 years and have had 14 bikes. This one is so much a perfect fit for all around fun riding, aside from its few problems it is perfect. The greatest thing is the support of this here BadWeb. Also once the '06 problems are cured they are cured. |

DO IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You will not be sorry. Best all around bike I have owned since I started riding at age 14 ( 40 years ago). We sold our 2000 ElectraGlide and it was replaced by the 06 ULY. We have never looked back or regretted the change. On long stretches of interstate I do miss the radio but that is just a small thing. (Message edited by retired_cop on January 24, 2007) |

Lake Erie HD are pretty nice people to deal with. They did my sidestand recall, and had the part there in stock, when my purchasing dealer (youngstown hd) failed to let me know when the stand came in. There is a dealer in Bedford, on aurora Rd, but they dont have anyone there that has a clue about the buells. I went there for an open house, tried to talk to the salesman there, and he said he had a lot of interest in the Uly, but didnt know anything about it. He then tried to sell me an xb9 and didnt know anything about it either. |

every time I hear about the problems with the Ulysses, I get a laugh because I purchased a 2006 XB12X Ulysses back in May and I haven't had any problems what-so-ever!!! It's the best motorcycle I've ever ridden and I've owned a motorcycle for almost 40 years now! |

I bought my Uly in Dec. '05, and I've managed to put 18,000 very enjoyable miles on it. I think you should buy one. (get an orange one. They're much sexier) |

Retired Cop: I have the Garmin 376C with xm radio works great on the Uly.I had a Gl1800 GoldWing till I traded up to the Uly and I also missed the radio and also the gps so I put the garmin on the Buell. It also has nexrad radar and I was able to skirt some local storm cells. |

Pso, Garmin 76csx in tank bag or h/b mount and waiting for a Starcom1Advanced comm unit to go under the seat. Comm unit will have capabilities for phone, mp3, etc, etc, as well as rider/passanger and bike to bike intercom. My better half likes the comfort more than the dresser plus we have more luggage capacity. (Message edited by retired_cop on January 25, 2007) |

The key seems to be good dealer support, here in Quebec I have yet to have that warm fuzzy feeling about the two nearby dealers available. However I have heard really positive comments from different members on this board in regard to certain dealers. Quiz your dealer / service manager about Buells and if you get the deer in the headlights look perhaps look elsewhere. It took me a trip to Deals Gap to really fall in love with this bike and now with 12 000 of trouble free kilometers on the clock I can honestly say this is the best bike I have ever owned. And I have owned about 96 bikes over 125 years (beat that!)

I compared the same bikes that you are interested in and chose the Uly. They are all nice rides but the Uly cost of ownership, parts, support, dealer network, and just plain fun could'nt be beat. I also considered the BMW 1200GS. Insurance was the cheapest as well! The day I took it to Deals Gap all other baggers were much, much slower. BMW GS(plural) got in the way during a jaunt in N. Georgia as well. This is not because I am such a great rider, the Uly is just so easy (and fun) to ride quickly. With self adjusting lifters, fuel injection and belt drive maintenance cost are next to nothing. Buy what moves you but if you settle on a Uly get a super fast orange one. Everyone knows they have more "juice"! They also have more a"peal". Happy Hunting! Titus |

Deal's Gap is my primary stompin' grounds and I agree. A well-dialed Uly can seriously haul ass in the twisties! Get one now. |

Us_uly, Lake Erie is a good dealership. They did my sidestand recall, their first, while I was there on vacation from New Mexico. My Brother is a Rider's Edge instructor there so I got to know a few of the mechanics. Mitch is the Buell mechanic who took care of my bike and was very knowledgable in Buells. They will also give you a good deal if you negotiate right. I believe Michael1 bought his Uly there. He happened to buy his bags the day I got my sidestand done because I saw him checking out my bags as he was carrying his boxes out. I would avoid Cleveland at all costs. I don't understand how that guy still has a business. I heard nothing but horror stories the whole time I lived there. Southeast Harley is the one on Aurora RD. Hit or miss with them. They have some great people working there and some crap ones. They were headed down hill and losing good people as I was leaving town. I believe Lake Erie is your best bet. Liberty Harley is supposed to be good guys, but I've never been there so I wouldn't know for sure. |

The only mistake you can make regarding a Ulysses is not buying one. It's my 8th ride, and the finest motorcycle that I've ever owned. I can throw bags on it and cross the continent, tame the twisties, and do gravel roads with equal ease. The KTM is more competent off road, but less so on road. The Multistrada is a good bike - if the Uly didn't exsist, there would likely be one in my garage - but dealers are few and far between, and service is expensive. The Tiger is, IMHO, uglier, taller (than the 07), and heavier with the same dealer network issues as the Multistrada. Any of these choices would be better than the BMW, however as newer BMWs have been plagued with electrical problems, ECU software issues, recalls, expensive final drives that fail, etc. Add to this BMW's rapidly collapsing dealer network and the high cost of purchase and ownership and I really don't think that the R1200GS is a viable choice for anyone who isn't a poser badge snob. The Uly is a revolutionary motorcycle and if Buell can avoid the quality control issues that plagued their early bikes (it seems as if they have succeeded at this) will prove as significant to the brand as the Goldwing was to Honda. I'd recommend buying a new 07 over an 06 as the few issues that were present in 06 have been corrected and the seat is far more comfortable. I bought mine in November with an unlimited mileage, 7 year warranty, and love it.} (Message edited by Old_Mil on January 26, 2007) |

The Ulysses is one fine motorcycle. All the BadWebbers are a wonderful group of people to get to "know". I stumbled upon the Badweb as I was researching whether or not to buy a Buell. There are several regular people posting messages that are very helpful and informative. I've been riding for over 40 years. I was looking at the same list of cycles as you are. One ride on the Ulysses was enough to convince me. It is one FUN bike to ride. Quirky? Maybe, it depends on your definition of quirky. It's finer point IMO torquey powerful engine air cooled, no hoses to leak and strand you belt drive, quiet, clean, no chassis jacking fuel injection, smooth running at all altitudes comfortable ergonomics if you are 6 foot or taller Assembled by an American company from quality components |

Hey, I'll just echo what everyone's said. My 2006 Uly now has 24,000 miles on it (various roads on/off pavement) without one single solitary problem of any kind. It is truly an amazing motorcycle. Nothing else to say. |

I'm with Wolfridgerider, Black is fast. Wait, that's black is beautiful. Well all I know is that other color, "arrest me orange" is definitely loud! For US_ULY, get the Buell. I have an 06 and had a couple minor issues that were from dealer set up. They put on the new kickstand, (recall), and that's it. The only thing about the Uly is occasional resetting of the TPS. (throttle position sensor) which is easy for a good dealer to do. You can get the software and wire to do it yourself if your so inclined. I'm 6'4" also and stand flat footed on the Uly. It is very comfortable with the pegs to seat relationship. As much as I love my Cagiva Gran Canyon the Uly is much more comfortable on a long trip. Go for it! |
