I am looking to improve the light output for the Uly. I have read all the HID conversions and really do not want to go that way. I have the killer 65watt hella bulbs and they are quite bright actually. The problem for me is the fact that Buell uses a plastic fluted reflector that cant be cleaned and it really does not put the light where I want it. I would like to keep it stock in appearance and was going to replace the reflectors with some free forms but after removing the headlight, I don't see that as a worthy alternative now.

I would like the low beam to be compliant (sort of) at about 65-90 watt with a good euro pattern that does not offend oncoming traffic, yet still have a nice wide beam to alert cagers to my presence.

Now the high beam....It will need to be pure freaking evil. It will not be used very much, only in emergency or to punish cagers for their stupidity. For example, on my Honda motard I have a 130 watt freeform magnesium reflector that I built from a 10 million candlepower rescue light. The heat from the high beam can be felt 20 feet away. Really. I built it from one of these:

It is pretty easy to find racelights to work with in the 8" size, but I am having a tough time finding something around 4" to fit in the factory shroud on the Uly.

I did run across a pair of these 4" babies tho:

Any other ideas out there before I go with these?

All I've seen is ppl adding additional lighting to the forks or the HID upgraded. I was thinking about going the HID route as well, so if you go an alternate route - please post some more about it w/ pics.

Baaaaahaaaaa!
I'm putting a pair of PIAAs on mine. This is Lorazepam's set-up from here on BadWeb.

There was a guy at the American Sport Bike barbecue last Sept that had a pair of small-diameter H4 lamps on his Buell.

The lamps were English IIRC and looked almost stock for an XB, but believe it or not I can't remember whether the bike was a Lightning or a Blast!.

I saw the 4" dual headlight setup currently offered by several vendors that use the H4 bulbs. I am sure they would work well for the low beam, but the fluted reflectors and lenses are designed to meet a level of DOT compliance that I will need to exceed for the high beam.

The name given to my XR650L streetmoto's 10 million candlepower headlight was "Death Ray". To maintain the "Death Ray" status, I will need to start with off road (non-DOT approved) lighting. Even if I was to change the reflectors in the stock headlight unit, the plastic lenses would still turn yellow in a very short time due to the amount of heat generated by the bulbs. I learned through experimentation on the original death ray that tempered glass lenses work best. Free form reflectors tend to produce a pencil beam, while the fluted reflectors produced more of a flood beam.

I ran across some dual 4.5" and dual 5.75" setups that use H4 bulbs. My concern with them was that they may not fit well in the factory shroud, and lose the factory look that I am trying to maintain.

I am starting to lean towards the soltek fuego off road race lights pictured above, due to the high power and off road design. They also look very easy to adjust with the knob on the back, and are available in driving and race configurations.

Mike aka Buellish has those. I haven't seen them at night, but they appear pretty bright.

Those lights on Buellish's Uly appear to be slider mounted motolights, available here:

http://www.cyclegadgets.com/Products/Motolight/?It em=MOTOLIGHT

I had them on my S3T; they are quite bright, and work very well. I ended up adding so much stuff to the S3T, however, that I had to upgrade the charging system. Might want to check and see if that gets to be an issue with the Uly...

Lights + GPS + heated grips starts to add up.

on my cityx there is a plug just above the headlight assembly, I swapped out the yellow and orange wires by pulling the pins out of the plug. what you are doing is running your low beam off of the euro driving light(that usa models do not have in the housing) wire so when you turn on your high beams the low stays on because the driving light is always on and when your low beams are on you are actually running off the drving light wire. thats sounds silly after reading it myself but it works fing on miine. just swap the places of the yellow and orange wires at the plug. then you will have both on with high beam and one on with low beam.

I run a heated vest, gps and heated grips and two 55w bulbs in my driving lights with no problems at all. there is plenty of juice to operate that much. I am using an iPod instead of satellite radio, which I removed from the bike, the iPod is way easier to deal with, and I can carry it in my pocket.
