How should I break in my 06 Uly engine? The 07 and 06 manuals are different. Which is the correct method? Is there an difference between an 07 and 06 engine? | ||

No difference. If you are going to follow a break in method follow the 07. Some folks who did stick to the 06 break in had engines that didnt create very good piston ring/cylinder seals. They ended up with engines that burnt oil. I personally flogged the hell out of mine the second I bought it. No high rpm stuff just very heavy on the throttle and now the bike does not burn a drop. YMMV | ||

I second what Wademan says. I broke mine in easy and it does use a pint or so of oil between 3000 mile oil changes. I will break in the next one a little more briskly. | ||

I rode mine the closest to the Motoman method that I could and my bike burns no oil as far as I can tell. I've babied bikes in the past and they ran like babies the entire time I owned them. I recommend pounding it within reason and changing out the oil under 100 mile on odometer. | ||

I concur. Throttle-load that sucker from the start without sustained RPM, without lugging, and without overheating. | ||

In my view, the first 50 miles (or thereabout) are critical for proper ring seal. So, no sustained RPM during the first 50 miles and/or first 2 - 3 engine heat cycles, which ever occurs first, followed by an engine oil/filter change no later than 100 miles. In other words, constantly vary the RPM to include engine compression braking during that period. My throttle is frequently (but briefly) wide open during the first 50 miles and gradually run up to high RPM (again, briefly) starting as early as 50 miles. | ||

Broke my '06 in by the book last May. Uses less than a quart per 5k, coming up on 15k with Mobil1 VTwin since last change and haven't used half a quart. I don't consider that excessive oil consumption by any means but if I had to do it again I'd break it in by '07 spec also. Breaking in by '06 spec was like breaking in a tractor or something... | ||

Thanks! I will use the 07 method ... it makes more sense based on new automobile engines I have broken in anyway. Before the engine rebuild, I was using ~ 1 quart per 1000 miles. Maybe it was because of the engine break in procedure. | ||
