decisions, decision - as part of the buildup for my AdventureX, the SO has requested that I try and make the saddle a bit better for long trips. I'm trying to convince here to learn to ride her own, but I'm not there yet, and I'm starting to carry the kids around from time-to-time, so its no bad idea to improve the saddle some.

anyway - playing with photoshop etc, I came up with a setup that I like the look of, but I've never redone a saddle, and have no idea what the pan under the Uly saddle looks like. Anyone on here had a Uly saddle customized, and / or care to offer comments? basically, it's a Uly saddle downsized about 12% on all dimensions to match this image....which would be perfect for my buildup.

Is it feasible, or is it more work that it'd ever be worth? start from a Uly pan, or the CityX pan (I know the whole seat wont fit, but will a uly pan fit the cityX side rails? )To quote Johnny 5 from short circuit - "need input"

Ulendo,
My brother had a custom seat made by Rich's custom seats in Seattle for his 950 adv. I know you like to do your own work but this is one possibility. He does top notch work, but is a little expensive +-$400. It looks like he let his web site expire, but here is the link anyway:

thanks for the tip jerry - I'll see what I can follow up on it.

while I like doing my own work, it's not cut in stone: I LIKE working with my hands, so its more like playtime when I get into project stuff. seating & upholstery I know next to nothing about, so outsourcing it would seem to be the way to go - I have no objection to paying someone else for their time when its THEIR hobby: results generally speak for themselves when someone enjoys the work.

biggest issue on this is I'm not sure what will/wont fit as the base. I'd hazard a guess that a Uly style pad & cover could be fit to a CityX base, but that doesnt mean it'd be as nice of a saddle as the OE Uly one.

general request to jerry & others at this point - can someone please take a couple of close up photos of the Uly saddle for me? I'd like to see:
a) exactly how the saddle wraps around the side rails
b) underside of the saddle, so I can see how the pan is contoured around the rails.
c) shot with a ruler / yardstick so I can scale things, and see exactly what will fit & hit on the CityX

thanks in advance - any help appreciated

Chris,

If no one does that for you by later tonight, I'll try to get some photos posted.

I'm a little busy this evening. I'm trucking my bike to the dealer for some warranty work. (drive belt)

thanks jerry - appreciate it.

I've been watching your belt thread quite closely, and have been thinking of a chain conversion myself. As you know, where I ride, there ISNT anyone, and in many places, you cant even get a truck in

a little - 1 1/2"wider at the wide point, and the pan fits over, and around the rails, which is promising for being able to simply over-lap where my custom tail will blend into the OE side rails.

looks like the Uly doesnt have the metal hooks 1/2 way along the saddle?

There is hooks 1/2 way along the saddle, they are part of the seat pan and they're plastic.

Chris, if you need more photos, give a shout. I'm not sure when I could do it for my bike will be in the shop for the next couple of days.

thanks all - daves was kind enough to use his showroom for me, and took photos of a Uly seat on a cityX - now I've gotta decipher the photos, and figure out how much I really want to hack the pan VS modifying a stock CityXpan.

If you decide to hack the Lightning pan, you can have my stock seat, instead of hacking the "X" seat. It would be yours for the cost of shipping.

toona - I 'might' be interested in taking you up on that. From the shots Dave sent me, it looks like the pan its self is the biggest issue on the uly seat - too much stuff hanging off the bottom to clear the electronics on the CityX.

I'll PM you after I sign off here - trying to find someone local I can work with for modifying the upholstery: amongst all the alphabet soup I can put after my name, I 'm a certified medical mobility tech, and one of the things I've worked with is orthotic seating - if I'm going to have to go custom, it'll be memory foam, gel pads, and contoured for me
