Railroads and telephone lines (I believe) used the same right aways so I wouldn't doubt that they were able to wire into the line and make a call. I'm just guessing here though. |

Arrow, CO if memory serves. The railroad maintained a phone line for just such an event.

I noticed that also.
If you look closely there is a small "clump" of fibers that appear to hang out of the side of the belt on the right.
That "clump" was evident for about 200 miles before the belt failed.
I think when that section of fibers broke, it might of caused the belt to hold an uneven tension across the width of the belt, giving the belt a noticable dirty or lesser worn area where the tension was less. I also noticed a loss of tension in the belt at about the same time the "clump" appeared.
I all fairness, I was warned of the belt's impending breakage. A couple of times that day I felt the belt skip on the pulleys when taking off hard from a dead stop. Frankly I was relieved when it broke, because I wasn't 100% sure the skipping was the belt. It felt like it could have been something much more serious. (gearbox, ect?). Also that particular belt was seriously loaded up in the mud last October in AZ. It was also plugged up with snow several times last spring.
I had intended to "test" the belt that day when I got home. There is a hill on the private road I live on. It is a good incline to practice wheelies, burnouts, and stoppies on. I couldn't wait however, and had to attempt a wheelie before getting home. I guess I should have listened to my gut.
The bike is at the dealer now being fixed. I trust if there is an alignment or other underlying problem causing belt failures, they will address it. |

Looks like it had some side chafing like mine did. Turned out to be the idle pulley. |

There have been enclosed chain dives on past motorcycles. Seems like the main problem was that the chain ran in an oil bath which tended to be messy and leak.
Why can't we have an enclosed belt?
Seems like just the ticket on a Uly.
How bout one of you manufacturer types design and produce a prototype. I will volunteer to test it. |

Hi all, heres my latest experience:
2000km ago was told by my dealership to go easy on the acceleration etc as the belt has a lump & a tear in in it, they have ordered me a new one, but have had to order it from the states (posting from aust.) & may be a little while arriving. That was three weeks ago & i have been very unkind to it of late, today especially! We rode for 5 or so hours today, mainly dirt forest roads & gravel rural type roads & towards the end of the ride there was a section of sweeping gravel corners that i was getting this unbelievable machine into these massive 80 - 100 km/h power slides in third & as i was coming out of the corners into the straights & the rear tyre would bite & the front wheel would be airborn! So much fun, tho such little respect for self preservation! The slight lump & tear in the belt is exactly the same as it was 2000km ago. It may even be just a manufacturing abnormality? Still thinking that when the replacement does arrive i will have the dealership replace - seems like no warranty until it does break - & keep the original as a spare. Is it just me or is it impossible to just putt around easily on these m. fo's? |

It's not you. It's the bike's fault. I have the same problem with my bike.
I'm hoping the cops will buy that one if the time comes!
If the dealer will replace under warranty, let them do it.
The biggest problem with a broken belt, is it WILL leave you stranded.

It's not you. It's the bike's fault. I have the same problem with my bike.
I'm hoping the cops will buy that one if the time comes!
I got stopped by a cop who DID buy that when the time came.
He had just gotten rid of a 'crotch rocket' because it had the same affliction. Got a warning. |

I see that you are a carpenter. Are you going to make that enclosed chain doohickey out of plywood? While you're at it, could you jigsaw up another set of wheels for my ULY?

I haven't broken a belt yet, but did strip the teeth out of the original M2 belt at the drag strip with 36,000 miles on it. I was able to ride it home. I pulled a wheelie on my CB750 and stretched the chain to the point it would pop on take off. By the time I got home the sprockets were damaged and had to be replaced. That cost about the same as belt.
I inspected the belt this month when I changed out the rear tire on the Uly. It still looked good at 16,800 miles or so. I do not pull wheelies every time I am out on it but have pulled a few over the last month. I appreciate you guys posting these pictures so I know what I am looking for.
Debueller - XB9ser changed his '03 Lightning to a chain drive in October. He likes it and it cost about the same as the belt. Nice set up if the belt just is not durable enough for your duty. He got all his information in the Knowledge Vault. |
