6900 miles, sounds like a bad bearing. Sigh

Yep. It, like us, will inevitably die.

Mine began the death rattle at around 4500 miles. It was replaced at 5400. I could have stretched it out longer, but why?

We know what lied at the end of that process.

Mine is in the beginning stages of the death spiral.

Since the Buellysses is huddled in the corner of the garage sucking on the battery tender until spring here in the North I am hoping that Buell will come out with a recall and a better fan by spring.

All things are possible. : )

I am sure that they have solved the failure problems and are working on the sound levels now.

Right?

Mine started making bad bearing sounds last Aug. Fixed under warranty. Lots of people have had fan failures.

Mine started rattling almost 10k ago, first 3 months on my Uly were brutal with this past summer's heat. RSS helped cut its activity though IMO.

Went ahead and ordered another and got my dealer's service mgr to listen and agree that if and when my fan croaked they would reimburse me for the cost. I didn't want to wait for a replacement when the time comes.

So now the rattling has subsided (calm before the storm?) and with colder weather and the RSS it hardly runs at all. Figures.

My fan has only been running after I switch off the engine. I took off the RSS just to see if it would run more often. Without the RSS, the dam fan ran almost the entire way to work this morning. I will be putting it back on, because it does make a difference.

FWIW, my dealer was happy to waranty the fan just for the bearing noise.

Jlnance,

Mine didn't even require to hear or see the fan before ordering the part. I called them and said that my fan was beginning the death rattle and would probably need to be replaced coon. They ordered it in advance of my next service and had it waiting.

I can't say enough about Bumpus HD in Murfreesboro. They also do a follow up call a few days after the service to make sure everything is ok. If it isn't, they go ahead and make a priority appointment to get it back in.

Below 40 degrees and the fan only comes on when shut down.

Bumpus has been good to me too.

I took my bike in for a dying fan, and there was no fuss. They replaced it. I had to wait a few weeks for them to get the part, but that's not really their fault.

When I took it in to get the sidestand recall, they spotted a bit of oil weeping from the counter sprocket seal. They asked if I'd like them to go ahead and replace it before it got worse. Then when they couldn't get me out of the shop in time to keep a prior engagement, they loaned me a Road Glide to ride home.

Can't ask for more than that (except I'd had rather had a V-Rod, but beggars can't be choosers).

Same here. I just called and told them the fan bearings were making noise. They ordered the fan and called me when it came in.

Anyway, I want to make sure people know they don't have to ride around with failing fans. The fans are covered by the warantee. Get a new one.

Chris,

I wouldn't worry about it. The offending bearing probably fell out. ;)

This time of year I'm not going to sweat it until it totally craps.

Chrisb,

Mine acts that way as well. Sometimes it works fine and sounds normal, other times it spins erattically, especially when it first starts up.

I am sure that this has to do with bearing failure and indicates that it will soon be failing.

Mine has done this for the last 2K miles and keeps on going.

Like I posted earlier, I am hopeful that Buell will come out with a more robust fan so I am waiting until it dies or my warranty is near an end so that I can hopefully install a better part.

I run down decomposed granite roads quite a bit and think that the DCG gets in the fan and eats it up.

Almost 4000-miles and my fan is singing strong (of course, now that I said that it'll probably explode on my next ride.)

I'm thinking the fan is going to be more of a maintenance item with these bikes. Plan on changing it every so often. Luckily, Buell doesn't see it that way, so we get free fans for two years. : )

I keep an extra fan in the shop and I put it in the saddle bag if I leave my zip code during hot weather.

I think Spiderman indicated he found some sort of magical sequence of wiggles that could be used to get the fan out without as much major disassembly as the manual suggested. Might want to ping him...
