Well after closely looking at the specs on the CityX, Uly, and Lightning Long, I have determined that the new TT is not a 1200 CityX. It has elements from all three of the above bikes, plus some parts and specs of it's own. While it may be a "parts bin" bike, the more I look at it the better I like the concept.
For those solo riders wanting a sport touring Buell, here is your chance! Just think what parts you could add with the $1200 savings over a Uly. Need suggestions? Ok then, as simple as 1,2,3:
1) Lose the number plates and use the attachment points for a set of small hard bags and brackets.
2) Lose the flyscreen and add a small fairing.
3) Add one custom seat of your choice.
End result, one kick ass, go any road, sport touring bike! Paint it in metallic pearl white with candy red accents and you may win the Buell contest. Just remember I get the prize (new Buell TT) and you get the honor of riding your new custom mount/contest winner!

Solo riders, check the specs on this bike.
It falls between the CityX and the Uly.
Larger frame/gas tank
Larger 1203 engine
Shorten Uly suspension
CityX seat height and handle bar width and height

Erik and Daves, you can thank me later for helping you market this bike.

lol, Nope not on this one. I have bought Four XB Buells I love them, I drive them all high miles.

This one I have no connection, and I even ride dirt and love Motard. I don't want to say they insult our intelligence by this offering, but its pretty close.

Brad, Brad, Brad, now you have given it away. But that must be the first prototype
as it is missing the sport touring fairing and you can not see the V-Rod engine as well. This is the surprise sport touring model due for early summer release. Please do not tell Electraglider. We are trying to surprise him.

Actually Brad, the more I look at your version, the more I like it. Now with the right small fairing and fender set, can you say hooligan touring! Won't the bros in the hood be blown away when an old guy like me on this bike caught's them napping!
Can you say sleeper supreme.

But what color(s) do you think it will be marketed in?
I saw a kit on a V-Rod that made it look like a Road Glide a couple years ago. Interesting concept, and it looks as if that is what you guys are wishing for.
Now that the secret is out, do you think the rest of the world should know about it?

I like that look with the Harley side bags.
I've seen the Road-Rod in person and it's just a V-Rod with another 100 lbs bolted to it from the Harley catalogue. http://www.cyclevisions.com/roadrod.html

I know you guys like to make fun but my philosophy is to tell Buell what we want and that way Buell doesn't just tell us what we want. I don't remember reading anywhere on this board that we riders were clamoring for side number plates but apparently Buell is telling us that is what we need. That's like Fidel and Noriega hanging fruit salad all over their chests even though they never earned those medals. I mean, when has Buell ever queried us about large vs small turning radius on the XB? I for one would think the ULY much more closer to perfection if it had normal steering radius. Sure I can live with it but if I had my druthers..., you know what I'm talking about. On a more positive tack, it's still the best handling bike I've ever owned but this board is just not for lobbying for the beautification of Buell, now is it? For one thing, to be sainted you must be dead and Buell and we the riders don't want that.

Oh, come on guys humor Erik's taste for this style. After all the CityX and Uly were brought about because of it. And I am sure given time, this bike will be just as nice and fun. Just think of the poor Firebolt guys. They have been waiting on a new Firebolt while we have been enjoying the new Buells.

Brad,

Do you think that the Hypermotard is even in the same price range as the XB12STT?

I don't think it's even close. Hell, even the 950SM is $3,000 more.

I guess if you spend the money, you can get just about whatever the hell you want.

True But, I would make a wager who sells the most in the next 12 months, even at a higher price. Its not Buell bashing, its about executing your ideas with a purpose and thought.

Price not is always the winner, look at Kawasaki. I love the XB frame but I'm fearful when the press sees the word Motard inspiring this and that they will do their side by side comparisons in a market the XB frame cannot hit and will end up in a fifth place comparison of five bikes. It 'more than plastic, its.... Well, a dirt bike with street wheels. Its a wild attitude with no fear, at least the Motard riders I have met. Insane comes to mind. Light and crazy.

I think I would have sold the Plastic Numbers as an accessory pack to the already diverse line of Lightning's, heck as a freestanding option some Ulysses owners may have wanted.

I hope my prediction is wrong. I like the good press Buell has ben getting.

But you throwing up pictures of the hypermotard in a "New Buell??" thread implies that you are doing a bike to bike comparison. I wouldn't compare a Chevy Camaro against a Ferrari 360 Modena and say that it's a fair comparison and that Chevy really missed the mark in producing a sports car.

I doubt you will be able to buy the Hypermotard for less than $18,000. $8,000 buys a lot of R&D, performance, and modifications.

Granted the STT isn't a "wow" bike, but for a tweaking of what is already available from the parts bin, I think there is enough of a difference to warrant a look. We are all just pissed that it isn't different enough to even tempt us to trade in our existing rides for the new bike.

I understand that.

Just don't be guilty of what you are saying that you are afraid that the bike mags will do. Grab ONLY the name motard and assume that there is only one flavor.

As always, Buell defies being pigeon holed for comparison.

Do you really think that you could do that with the Hypermotard or the 950SM?

Both of those bikes are pigs compared to what you pictured. Those bikes are 250s or smaller.

To me, a true Motard is a 550 or smaller displacement. Given that, NONE of the hyper/super/mega motards are really motards.

Ah well, guess that makes it alright then. I see the Goldwing has been rehashed too. High front guard and some mud plugging tyres. Should be a great off road tourer Motard. Shame they didn't include the number plates like Buell did though.

The only "real" super motard I have seen in person was at a battletrax event in Cincinnati (Thanks Eastgate Buell!).

It was a Honda four stroke thumper, something like a 450 I think. He was, of course, waxing everybody else on the course, though the owner of Eastgate Buell put on a pretty good show on a jaw droppingly beautiful S1.

I talked to motard man for a while. It was something like $6000 new, and he had proceeded to put in another $5000 for just suspension work. I think he had some invested in the engine as well. The bike, of course, showed up and left on the back of a pickup truck.

Buell builds street bikes, and all the single cylinder dirt bike based hypermotards would be a freaking disaster as a normal street bike. It would be fun to buzz around town on and to play with, but that's it. They aren't really street bikes, they are purpose built race bikes (that may happen to be barely street legal).

So the real comparison to the TT is indeed that Ducatti Hypermotard. If and when it hits production in a street legal form and with an "obtanium" price tag, then we can make intelligent comparisons. Right now though, you can't buy one.

And as I think about it though, I could easily see taking the new Buell TT for a 8 hour trip to Deals Gap for a long weekend without a second though (and in fact have done effectively exactly that). Not sure that would be looking particularly attractive on that Ducatti.

Right now I can buy a 9sx for under $9000. If I could buy that Ducatti hypermotard for that much, and if the cost of ownership does not work out to "another bike payment on top of your bike payment", then that will be a very attractive bike. It's georgous and looks to have a lot of potential.

But if the thing comes in costing more then a BMW GS to buy, and more then a BMW GS to maintain, and has a 75 mile fuel range (down hill with a tail wind), it will be just another interesting but impractical exotic.

The TT however, were I buying again today, would be a very compelling alternative to my 9sx. I would have a terrible time trying to decide between the 9sx, the TT, and the Uly.

Until that Ducatti hits the streets in a street legal form with some real specs and a real street price, I don't know how you could use it to slam the TT.

Well said. The world is full of bikes that smoke Buell on paper (performance, price, or something else), but somehow, Buell stands alone as the whole, extremely usable, high quality package.

Y'all got me digging further. I found an advrider post where somebody sat through the presentation by Ducati in the recent Italy show.

They quoted a date and some specs for the new hypermotard.

http://news.motorbiker.org/blogs.nsf/dx/1113200621 2422MWERXB.htm

From that link:

quote:

Next was Claudio Domenicali, Director of Product Development, ie, the man in charge of making sexy products.

He started with the HyperMotard, 1100 cc, 2 valves. 2 versions will be available, the normal and the S version.

The engine develops 95 hp, weights 180 kg (178 for the S) dry, uses a dry clutch, and most surprising, they have doubled the service intervals to 12,000 Kms !

Cool stuff, no doubt, but note the specs. Assuming that Ducati "inflates" the same as Buell inflates, and taking the specs for the XB12STT from the Buell website, then the Ducati supermotard will be 8 HP *down* on the Buell, and only 1 kg lighter, and a lot more expensive to service.

The XB12STT supposedly makes 103 HP and weighs 181 kg. Thats compared to the Ducatti at 95 HP and 180 kg. Hope the Ducatti is cheaper then

(and I know Buell is lying, but expect Ducati is as well. We will have to wait for independent tests to find the real numbers).

Don't get me wrong, that's probably the prettiest Duc I have ever seen, and I would love to own one as a second bike if I could afford one. Just trying to keep things in perspective : )

You guys are confusion patriotism with motorcycles.

Reep, my friend has a KTM 640. Since he's owned the KTM he's bought from new a Z1000 and the special edition black GSXR1000K5. He's sold them both. This summer he bought a 1 year old Monster S4R, spent nearly a grand on a full Arrow exhaust system for it, and now he's selling the Monster regardless.

The one bike he won't part with, unless he replaces it with another, is the KTM. I've given chase to the 640cc single cylinder water cooled machine with the Buell and the 916 on the open road, and that thing handles like you won't believe. A top speed of 119mph sees it well up for anything my 100RWHP Buell can throw at it. More surprisingly is the way it can keep out in front against the 916 on a twisty road. I doubt any XB could pass it in a corner. And just to be clear, that KTM is no way just a buzz around town bike. In fact it is perfect for any road in the UK and would probably be a great bike to go around the world on.

As for the Hypermotard. I don't see people using it to slam the TT. I do see people liking it and wondering where the bejesus Buell are heading with the TT when they have a Hypermotard to judge the styling comparison - not the performance aspect. After all, I don't think anyone yet on the BadWeB has criticised the TT for its performance. They might have suggested the TT is a heavyweight to be put in the same slender league as the lean looking Italian's. Lastly, the Hypermotard gets the latest 1000cc Multistrada engine so why wouldn't it suit your 8 hour journeys?

: ) And you are confusing patriotism with "wanting to tweak Rocket" : )

I'm the last person you have to convince about the gifts of a good thumper. I learned to ride a sporting ride chasing a big fat set of knobbies on the back of an XR-650 ridden by a seriously good rider. I could catch him in the straights, but he would smoke me through the corners. \

I got to ride it quite a few times as well, and would love to have one like it someday. If you have time to set up correctly for the turn (or for the set of flowing turns) to get that long travel suspension settled in, you can't beat them for carving corners. Narrow, light, responsive. I would imagine a proper Motard with shortened suspension travel would offer unreal handling.

Though my first trip to Deals Gap was with XR-650 guy, me on a Cyclone, and a friend on a Kawasaki ZR-7. Its about an 8 hour trip from here. Two bikes rode the roads, one road a trailer. Guess which one was on the trailer : ) That'd be a seriously brutal ride at 80 mph on various highways for 8 hours on a single. It was quite cozy and comfortable on my 9sx (once I managed to bungee up all the luggage).
