DaveS came through for me. Called him on Thursday, part is installed with new K&N on a Monday.

Now if the weather would warm up. Don't feel like heading to work at 6am before sunrise when its 34 degrees. Maybe this weekend.

Dgunther,

Took the message in to Earl's today and they said they can do the update. It is the service writer with the pony tail but I would definitely bring in the write up from Chad. He said a half hour charge to do it. Wonder if I could talk him to a TPM reset at the time as well?? The bad news is the covers are back ordered until November 7. Overall they do a take an interest in me. Not a bad Buell dealership but they need a champion higher up to make it work all over.

Mike

Redchili and others,

Has anybody kept the stock airfilter?

GTMG,

Why would you spring for the 07 airbox and keep the restrictive air filter?

Like putting new wiper blades on a busted windshield.

Honestly I like keeping my bikes close to stock. If I have to tinker with it too much in my mind I have the wrong bike. Already tinkering more than usual by changing to the 2007 seat and getting ready to change tires. Everything I am doing brings the bike to '07 stock though. Just wondering how much a difference it really makes. I have never really bought into an airfilter giving you that much more horsepower and my assmeter is not sensitive enough to tell the difference between a real work hp of 85 or 87.

Understood,

I guess I coming from a different place. I have the race kit and race filter. I am looking for the airbox to give that last little bit of airflow.

If you keep the stock ECM and filter, but have the ECM reflashed to the 07 map, I think you should be fine.

You are basically building an 07, as you said.

I am looking for a better low end and that is one of the reasons I am considering doing it. I cannot get a feel for what the race ecm does for you. Can you give your insight ft_bstrd?? Does it really smooth out throttle response?

I think it does, but it's been so long, I can't remember what it was like without it.

I don't care for race ecm's much myself. I'm running a standard Drummer with stock ecm and race filter on the Uly and no dramas, runs like a Buell does. It's possible the race ecm has a more advanced spark curve which would not help any bikes that tend to ping a little. At the end of the day, the race ecm is factory tuned/designed for the Buell race kit. But the stock ecm is quite capable of adjusting for more fuel if required, and will do this depending to an extent on what pipe is fitted. (Edit - to clarify, the ecm tunes itself below 3500 rpm, which then affects the fuel delivery at WOT, so a pipe that performs well around 3 to 4k rpm will cause the stock ecm to richen up for WOT, but a pipe that doesn't do well at lower revs may cause the ecm to run the engine a bit too lean at high revs/large throttle openings.)

It's very obvious that the 07 airbox lid must do something quite significant to the airflow to require a different map in the ecm, and that this reflash is required even with the stock airfilter. So maybe the race airfilter only gives more power up top? If I lived in the USA I would already own one of these airbox covers : ) just to see what it does.

I am running a stock filter, stock ECM, stock pipe (for now, working on a SpecOps), and '07 airbox. I wanted to take things one at a time.

Filters do make a noticeable improvement in WOT performance, and I may go there, but the current combo tastes great, less filling.

Opto,

At the moment, all we know is the flash is different between '06 and '07.

I look forward to someone documenting the differences and posting them here for all to know.

Bumping this back up. Did anybody determine what the difference in the flash was? I was wondering if maybe it did address some low end issues? I did order one but am curious now that some have had it on a while what are the results? Any dyno runs?

I like to keep it close to stock also. I'm running only the modified '06 air box. It made a very noticeable difference in throttle response, butt gauge H.P., and torque. I did not re-flash at all, and I have the stock air filter, and it runs great.
I feel that if I were to go with the filter and or the muffler mods, it would change the mixture enough to require going the next step, the '07 flash.
I'm so pleased with the way it runs now that I feel no need to change anything else.
The only reason I can see for changing more stuff would be if I rode it hard enough to be frequently maxing out the available power. For me it is only a momentary thing when it does happen because I don't race it and where I ride the roads are quite twisty. These additional modifications are aimed more at higher RPM, gains I don't need.

That smiley may not be appropriate here but it looks really cool.

Just installed the 07 airbox cover and K&N filter. I wish the toolkit had the smaller torx wrench needed to remove the servo. Anyway, seemed to cure the 3000 rpm surge and it pulls noticeably harder from 4k up, especially up to redline. So what can be done about that pesky rev limiter? Surely that motor can safely run up to 8 grand...

I will be adding the 07 airbox with my next service. We'll see what it does. I don't have any gripes, but more air seems to be the answer for everything.

Works for:

I'm regularly bouncing off the rev limiter too. I wonder if there is more top end (the likely situ, which can be rather addictive) or a slight drop in low end?

The latter would be counterintuitive.

It amazes me just how fast the engine revs from 4000 to the limit. It sounds and feels so good you don't want to shift, but it also happens so quickly it is hard to shift fast enough!

We're lucky to have such engines!! We just need to learn to shift quicker! More RPM doesn't necessarily mean more HP or TQ, or even a quicker et, it would, however, probably mean people would be on here every week complaining about blowing them up!

I don't hit the rev limiter much at all. I think I've bounced off it about 6 times.

"More RPM doesn't necessarily mean more HP or TQ"

Actually it does as hp=tqxrpm/5252. I believe your "necessarily" refers the engine being able to run and breathe correctly in that extended range. Doesn't the Race ECM have a higher rev limiter by 400 RPM or something?

The thing I find funny about that equation is Honda Engineering's train of thought. I read an article on how they wanted more HP for the S2000 when they were building it and knew they had to add more HP or Tq. Which one did they add? Needless to say, it had a 9000 RPM redline on the first engine. That seems to always be their answer for everything. Although I will give them credit that when they switched to the 2.2 liter engine the increased stroke meant increased Tq and naturally required a lower redline.I bet some engineers lost a few nights sleep over that change.

I considered an S2000 but it would be too much work to drive. Like the inline 4 bikes, much horsepower, torque, not so much. That's what I really like about the Uly-tons o' torque at 3 grand and it's just loping along and still getting decent mileage. My mirrors are buzzy at 3 grand, but completely clear at 4 grand-just another reason to keep the revs up.

I meant necessarily no gains with stock stuff, usually need to modify engine to gain by higher revs.

I added this last week to my Uly with no other mods (stock air filter/ECM/exhaust) and I love it. A great improvement if not just for the extra intake noise.

No issue with running lean so far and it's been cold here in Cleveland.

So far I don't think the remap is needed. I talked to my dealer and they said the new map wasn't out yet... I did have to tell them use on from the 07 stocker... But then, I didn't want to pay *that* much for it.

I did the 06 to 07 cover trick and it did help out with throttle response. However, yesterday I switched from the 07 box to the American Sport Bike open airbox conversion with crank vent relocation and the difference was huge.

I am now running open air with k&n, crank vent relocated, race ecm with factory map and odie's dual outlet valveless can and could not be happier with the performance and driveability improvement.

Kind of interesting in the Dyno runs you really see very little difference from the stock. I mean a couple of horsepower and maybe a little flatter torque curve. I rarely ride at the top end of the rpm gauge. Just not sure all the money in mods is worth it. I am really interested to see what happens after someone replaces the airbox and does the Ecm change if there is a pickup in horsepower/torque on the dyno.

Michael1 how much did they ask to do the reflash? IMHO this should be free if you own a 2006 xb and buy the airbox.
