Just got my policy renewal from Cincinnati-buttheads went WAY up on my rates, total annual premium is $824, with a spotless record. I called USAA, my old company, and they don't write bikes in NC, but go through Progressive, and they quoted me $983, fer cryin' out loud. Who in NC has reasonable full coverage? I moved my cars back to USAA so it would be bike only, no multi vehicle discount. |

NC has some serious insurance issues. The only remedy is some serious pressure on the legislature. (Message edited by rubberdown on November 13, 2006) |

Dmcutter - we pay $850 full coverage with Allstate on an 06 Uly with a clean record and multiple bikes. Foremost was about the same last year. NC insurance is outrageous. BTW - Dmcutter and Paulync - come over to Carolina Corner Carvers! We are all over the state and welcome more NC Buellers.

SHOP, SHOP, SHOP! Shopping for insurance will save you money. Then when that doesn't work, register out of state! |

When I picked up the Uly from its 15,000 miles service, the owner of the dealership told me they were working on a program to lower insurance rates in NC. Shelt said that he is working with Buell and NC insurance trying to lower rates. This new program just started as of this month. I going to call the GM this week for details and a quote. I'll let you know what I find out. |

Geico in California is: $482.00 for my '06 Uly $680.00 for my '07 Ultra CLassic $100.00 deductible on each. Progressive I dropped when they tried to increase my premium on my '03 XB9S for an accident on my 1993 Yamaha GTS by $1,100.00 following an accident. Try Geico if they insure in NC. I have had a claim on my '03 XB9S since getting GEICO and my rate did not go up more than $125.00. Which is what I was expecting with Progressive but did not happen. I had same issue when I got mine. Almost 20 years spotless with Progressive and they wanted to up it to 1100. Tried State Farm and they wanted 875. I went with Dairyland (which is owned by Sentry Ins.) and they were around 550. My 2004 Sportster 1200 was only 350 through progressive. All the insurance companies said that it was based on CC size. That is a load. I am in Oregon |

Big load. I had three bikes with Progressive they said the reason they increased the Buell is it was the most expensive. That is crap, because my '92 Electra Glide at the time was worth more than the Buell. The claim through Progressive was $3,600 and with the $1,100 they were looking at getting $3,300 back in insurance increases over three from me. I was with Progressive like 10 years and never filed a claim before this and I will never insure with Progressive again. |

They were not increasing my premium to $1,100.00 they were increasing it by $1,100.00. Highway robbery. My Premium on '03 Buell would have been like $1,900.00. (Message edited by krassh on November 14, 2006) |

My ULY is a year old now so I dropped comp and collision and now only carry the state mandated coverages and that is only $76 from State Farm. From what I see on this board, very little damage is done to a ULY if it is dropped and to carry 250 or 500 deductible doesn't seem like good business sense to me. I paid cash for the bike so I don't have to carry full coverage and so I don't. |

"From what I see on this board, very little damage is done to a ULY if it is dropped and to carry 250 or 500 deductible doesn't seem like good business sense to me." Yep. Insurance only makes good business sense to those who actually wreck their bikes. To the rest of us, it's a waste of money. From what I understand, it only takes a dent in the frame to total a Uly in most cases. I think I'll keep my $13/month full coverage just in case. At least I'll get some of my money back if I ball it up. |

Ulywife/M2NC- Please post if you hear anything positive from Shelton. I'm paying $970 for the Uly and $889 for the Electraglide through Nationwide OUCH!! I was unaware...the commander-n-chief takes care of this. Now I'm sorry I asked. No points, multi bike, MSF experience rider course discount, yada-yada-yada. Guess life could be worse I was paying $2500 on a Sportster in Europe. Could only afford insurance 6 months a year no matter the weather. Paid it off quick so I could ride year round. |

Even at $800+ a year for full coverage, and even though I own it outright, I'd hate to eat the whole cost if I wadded it up or had some dip run into me. Plus, out here in the country, the likelihood of a deer impact is very real. |

Flynuly - will keep you posted. I'd love to see about $500/year. Do you have your car insurance with Nationwide? |

Given the current trends in insurance - $3200 a year for a 06 BMW K1200R, for instance - the day will come when insurance availability will be the limiting factor on the ability of people to drive newer and nicer vehicles. It may come to the point where a lot of people are on 10 year old bikes and self insuring. |

Ulywife- I believe we have everything through Nationwide but I would have to check with the S/O to be sure. |

You can go into just about any Asian dealership and buy any sportbike without having to carry comprehensive insurance if you finance through the manufacturer. That's how the younger crowd gets on the liter bikes. |

lowflyer- i hit a rock and went over the bars going 55 on my xb12x. the only structural damage (not including levers and stuff) to the bike was a dent under my frame puck and 2 trashed rims. looking at about 2k in repairs, which is actually less than what it would of cost me to have collision on the bike. i've lowsided in dirt going about 40 and had 30 bux in plastic to replace. moral of the story, the bike is pretty hearty. the other moral of the story is that insurance is a total scam unless you plan on totaling your bike every 3 years. |

I reckon that's what I was getting at with my post above. Insurance makes sense to folks who have to make a claim. For everyone else, it's a waste of money. I've high-sided, low-sided, and 12-o'clocked mine with only damage to plastic, blinkers, a tail lamp, and a peg mount casting (all of which I replaced). That all happened in the dirt except for the 12. I did that at a stop light one night. It ground the tail lamp all the way to the tail casting and FUBARed the license plate bracket. I rode it out, stuck the landing and had to go home with only 3 LEDs working. Yes, it is a tough bike and easy to repair. Mine still looks like the day I brought it home. |

Waste of money? Theft and fire destruction occur more often than people think. Hard to repair when it's gone. |

"Hard to repair when it's gone." Whoa...now that is fatalistic. I would have chosen the word "if" instead of "when." Sort of the same way I said that it makes sense to folks who have to make a claim. If you never make a claim on a policy, it was a waste of money. 3 years at $3200 per year for just insurance is like paying for a new bike. Fack that. |
