I'm contemplating a reasonably discounted 2006 Ulysses, but wanted to ask the board if there have been significant changes to the 2007 model that would make me pause and spend an extra $1500 on the bike.

Ask your salesperson, they should know.
But just in case...

Improved fork springs
Pirelli rather than Dunlop tires
Lower standard seat height
Revised air box (more/cooler air)
Revised oil pump(greater scavenging?)

Still orange or black(orange is better), still goes great, tough choice!

I think they did tweak the fuel injection a little as well, didn't they?

I did ask the salesperson. But, they're really wanting to get rid of the '06, so the response was "no real changes to the '07 model." I figured that I'd get better, accurate info on this board.

I don't think there is $1500 worth of difference between the 06 and the 07. The most noticable is probably the seat, which I believe sells for $130. If you find front end dive bothersome, the 07 comes with different springs.

$1500 will buy you lots of nice accessories. Take the 2006. You can "make" the 2006 into a 2007 for very little money. Seat as mentioned $130. Revised air box approx. $30. Tires are consumables, dealer would probably be willing to swap tires with 2007 if it meant the deal. Oil pump scavenge gear $30 but is not that big of a deal. Fork springs, just dial your suspension appropriately and fork dive is no big deal. Take the 2006, buy cool accessories and then decide if you want the "improved" 2007 parts.

I have the say "The_raven"'s last comment is where I was headed. Looks like for under $1k I could get the bags...I tend to take long trips.

That brings up another point. What do people thing of trips on this? E.G. I had a Yam FZ1 previous to this and did not find it difficult to ride from Dallas to Denver one day (just over 900 miles) is that possible on the Uly?

Not only possible but highly addictive. You will not want to stop for more than the essentials ( gas, food, bathrooms )and will in all likelyhood develop an ear to ear permagrin as well.........

I've got a customer who stopped by with one he's had for 10 months. 21,000 miles were on his odometer!

If you need some bags, I do have one set left at $899.95 btw.

Jebber: Here's two rides I did this year. They should answer your question on taking long distant rides on a Uly.

I'm starting to plan next years rides: Some possibilities are Utah 1088, Minnesota 1000, and some regional saddle sores.

I liked the front fork springs and the Pirelli tires on the 07! With my long legs, I like the 06 seat. As far as the engine improvements, I like the way my 06 runs better than a couple of the 07s I test rode. On that point I think it is "luck of the draw"! Btw, the money off on the 06 is due more with depreciation, than 07 improvements.
So which model to get is "dealer's (customer) choice".

A 2007 will always be worth at least 500 more even when you sell or trade it so the difference is closer to $1,000. I would be all over the 2007 for the difference.

The '06 with a $35 airbox cover works just fine for me. Think of it as free bags, free tank bag, free taller fairing, free handgrip heaters, and if you are long-legged, better ergos for the knees.

And a free lunch or two at a really nice restaurant. And maybe slightly cheaper insurance, taxes, and marginally less depreciation for you to absorb.

Red Chili's comment touches the core for me. I'm 6'5". I was really impressed with the leg comfort during my test ride. That's probably the deciding issue for me. The last really comfortable bike I owned was a '95 R11GS.

I also tend to hold onto my bikes (the FZ1 was an exception), so trade in value 7 years from now (about my average) is pretty watered down between an '06 and '07.

I appreciate all this input. Good to know that there's a solid crowd behind the ULY willing to help a Newbie.

Thanks for the links Bienhoabob, gives me comfort to know the capability for a long one if I decide to do it.

The Moab trip sounds good, it's one of my favorite places, I make at least two trips a year there (I'm in Denver). I love riding through Utah and northern NM.

Yo Jebber,

I too switched from a 03 FZ1 to a Uly, smartest thing I ever did. I rode two days ago in about 35 deg. temp with on and off wet snow. The Fizzer would never have got me to do that! I am 6'-0" and I love the increased seat to peg relation ( used to cramp up on the FZ1) The seat is amazing as well, for both me and my wife, 1000 km days are not a problem! Oh, and for what it is worth, my buddy on his ZX12 couldn't follow me up the Dragon! Get a laminar lip and you have the ultimate sport touring machine....

Jebber, I'm in Denver too! (Littleton).
There's another feller prolly gonna get a Uly in Highlands Ranch too, asking about stuff on ADVrider. Good guy, currently a Beemerphile.

When we get moved in in a couple few weeks you'll hafta swing by.

Red_Chili

You must not be from New Mexico...or, you'd be Green_Chili.

A meet up sounds like a plan. With all the positive feedback, I think I'm going to have to go for the Uly, specially after hearing from Supertoon on the '03 FZ1...that's what I had...even the same year.

Oh, I'm in Louisville, so the other side of CO practically (on most bikes), but, I imagine on the Uly it could be traversed in 10-15 min.

Jebber, pull the trigger, you won't regret it! Just give it some time to get used to a completely different (read better) bike. Driving it home from the dealer I would have given anything to get my FZ1 back. It pinged like crazy, wandered all over the road and I was alway hitting the rev limiter. Fresh gas fixed the pinging, and syncs will fix the swimming, now I wouldn't trade for anything.

Long distance no problem, except you won't want to stop!
The permagrin can be embarrassing until you see fellow Buellers with the same issue!!!
