I ordered up a set of the Polly heaters from DaveS last week (haven't gotten them yet) and was thinking about the install. I noticed on the right (throttle) side switch housing that there is blank plate in the center between the kill and starter switches. I'm thinking it was put there for the apparently non-existent optional grip heaters. So, my question is: does anyone know if there is a Buell/HD/generic 3-position rocker type switch that will fit this opening. Even if I don't wire the grip heaters up to that spot it could be used for a switch for additional lights (or some other farkle). | ||

That is there for the non existent headlight on off switch. I too have wondered if you could get that switch from one of the European dealers and use it for the heaters. | ||

I'm assuming if it's an on/off switch for the headlight then it's only 2-position. I got the hi-lo heaters so I need a 3-way. Hmmm...wonder if a turn signal switch would fit there. Left=lo, right=hi and push button=off. | ||

I have looked into this before for others, Buell does not sell just the switches. You have to buy the whole housing to get them? BTW The heaters should be there today for you. | ||

Thanks Dave! Gonna be down in the 20's the next couple mornings... Maybe when the snow starts flyin' (and I'm not riding) I'll see if I can find something that'll fit in that spot. | ||

Don't the Euro bikes have the switch? For post-'77 BMW airheads that was the fix to get the switch back. Also I would think that since the switchgear is farmed out the manufacturer should be able to provide a control group with the headlight on/off switch, I'd use it to activate aux lighting myself. Checked the service manual last night and it's as Dave said. The manual says that the switches are not repairable so if there is an issue the entire cluster gets replaced. FB - If I can't find a switch to fit the blank (and be able to mount it) I'll probably put on the right side of the dash as I've seen others do. But a picture would be good - thanks. 31F when I left the house this morning and my finger tips were a bit chilly by the time I got to work (35 miles ~1 hour with traffic). If they show up today I'm installing them tonight. I think I'm going to get a set of Hippo Hands as well (or the cheaper ATV equivalents). | ||

Here you go.  I installed it on the left side of the front cowling. I can get to it easily with my left hand and it should be fairly protected from rain. (Must footnote mounting position to ChadHargis) (Message edited by ft_bstrd on November 02, 2006) | ||

That switch is about an inch maybe a little less wide but it is an inch and a quarter deep, so I don't think it will work. | ||

No, it won't. I was thinking either the turn signal switch or one that is about the size of the kill switch but with 3 positions. | ||

Thanks guys. I've got the windscreen off now and I'm still debating where to put the switch. I've got another question - the wiring schematics in the service manual aren't all that clear to me. Red wire to the aux outlet is (+) correct? And where did you guys ground these things? Any help would be appreciated. | ||

I grounded it to one of the attachment bolts on the upper left side of the faring. | ||

Red wire I tapped into the cigarette plug power and I grounded to the attachment bolt on the left side inside the front cowl ( when looking at it from the front.) I mounted my switch beside the tach as seen in the other thread. | ||

I have a direct lead that goes back to the battery and am using a relay rather than direct wiring to the accessory plug. I have a 30A fuse on the relay. I just don't want a bonfire in the bonnet! You guys might want to try that set up eventually. | ||

I don't use my accessory plugs at all so I have no worries. At most the polly heaters draw 3 amps so I'm not worried about that being a problem if I did plug something in there like a radar detector or GPS. | ||

I meant ditto to Jmhinkle's post. I tap the accessory plug too. I ground to one of the screws that holds the bonnet together. I use Dual-Star grip heaters; not the bar heaters. They too draw very little current and I have nothing plugged into the accessory plug but a cheap volt meter. My other devices are hard wired with their own fuses. | ||

Thanks for all the input guys. I didn't get things finished up last night due to a need to play chauffeur (i.e. haul kids places). I'm going to try to get it done tonight. I think I'm also going to pick up a different switch. My kit came with the plastic one and I'm not sure it'll hold up too well. Thanks again. I'll try to remember to get pictures as well. | ||

When I got my Dual-Star kit, it came with that chrome toggle switch. I thought at the time that it didn't look as slick as the one FB has, so I ordered that round plastic one. When I got it, I worried about how reliable it might be; especially with the amount of riding I do in the rain. I found that toggle switch boot at Napa Auto Parts for about $5, and then threw the round plastic rocker switch in the junk drawer. The toggle switch has worked out great and it looks (to me) like part of the bike. The other nice thing about the toggle switch is that if it ever does go bad, I can get a replacement nearly anywhere. That SPDT round rocker is not so easy to find outside the Interweb. |
